The Soroca Fortress is a famous historical and cultural landmark in Moldova. It is located in the city of Soroca, next to the beautiful Dniester River. This fortress is a precious heritage of the medieval period in Moldova and one of the must-visit tourist destinations.
The Soroca Fortress was originally built by the Grand Duke of Moldova, Stefan the Great (Ștefan cel Mare) at the end of the 15th century. It was originally a wooden structure. In the 16th century, during the reign of Petru Rareș, it was converted into a stone structure and became an important part of Moldova's defense system to resist foreign invasions, especially the attacks of the Ottoman Empire.
The design of this fortress is very unique. It is a circular structure with a diameter of 37.5 meters. There are five towers around it, four of which are rectangular towers and one is the main entrance tower, which fully reflects the style of medieval star-shaped fortifications. The entire fortress was built with local limestone and has exquisite craftsmanship. It is a masterpiece of medieval Moldova's architectural art and is therefore known as the "Pearl of Medieval Moldova".
Today, the Soroca Fortress has been carefully restored and is open to the public. It also has a museum that displays artifacts, weapons, and daily life scenes related to medieval Moldova's history. Standing on the fortress, you can also enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Dniester River and the surrounding area.
The Soroca Fortress is not only an important witness to Moldova's history, but has also been included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.
