Old Port of Marseille

4.7/5
277 reviews
The old port area is the center of gravity and the essence of the entire Marseille region, not only because it is the origin of Marseille and was the third largest port in the world 200 years ago, but more importantly, the pure Marseille style can only be seen here. There are many famous monuments around the Old Port, including the castles of Saint John and Saint Nicholas built in the era of Louis XIV. In addition, the old port is also the life and entertainment center of the Maasai people. The area around the Old Port is a famous food district. Most of the restaurants in the port operate a famous Marseille delicacy - "Marseille Fish Soup". The "Old Port" is actually not old. It was rebuilt after the Second World War, but the locals still call it "Old Port". Apart from habit, there should be a historical sentiment in it. Every morning, the fish market here is very lively, and the wharf is full of small fishing boats and boats. The whole harbor is full of the unique leisure atmosphere of southern France. The master plan of the Old Port Mirror View Pavilion was jointly undertaken by FosterPartners and French landscape architect Michel Desvigne. A huge viewing pavilion of 46 × 22 meters, which is like a mirror, was built here. It is supported by 8 thin columns. Since then, the corners of the mirror pavilion have been gradually thinned to reduce the visual weight. The view of the surrounding old port is reflected from the ceiling of the polished stainless steel mirror, as well as the faces of thousands of tourists who stop to watch, creating a strange beauty, which not only provides a place for tourists to stop and shade, but also It allows tourists to become part of the landscape when they enjoy the scenery of the old port.Marseille · 18.4 km from Marignane

The center of the Ancient Almshouse has an artistic courtyard, the Archaeological Museum (Musée d'Archéologie) and the Museum of African, Oceanic & American Indian Art, which is very eye-catching. In 1671, the nobles of Marseille built a shelter for "poor people and beggars", which is the Ancient Almshouse located in the old city of Marseille. The main part of the Almshouse is divided into two parts: the Pierre Hospital and the Dome Church. It was designed by Pierre, the author of the Palace of Versailles in Paris and the royal architect of King Louis XIV of France. It has the style of the Italian Renaissance, but is simpler and plainer. After several renovations, the current Almshouse has become a comprehensive cultural center including the Mediterranean Archaeological Museum, the Egyptian Antiquities Museum, the African Fine Arts Museum, and the French Institute of Social Sciences. It is said that the construction of the ancient relief house was not due to the mercy of the Marseille nobles, but because of their peculiar mentality similar to "cleanliness obsession". They were fed up with the poor running around the streets of Marseille for a long time, so they simply built this shelter and forced them to live in it and not leave at will. Unexpectedly, hundreds of years later, this building was put to great use.Marseille · 18.1 km from Marignane

In recent years, many artists have been invited here, so the place has gradually begun to permeate the artistic atmosphere, with a unique and fresh literary atmosphere. If you walk around here, you can see all kinds of colorful graffiti and specialty shops. At night, this is the gathering place of the bar, changing the artistic atmosphere of the day. The Old Port of Marseille is the most vibrant part of the city. The fish market bustles in the morning, cafes are filled with sunbathers in the afternoon, and yacht masts sway in the sunset at dusk. Old buildings line both sides of the port, alongside modern restaurants, and paving stones commemorate World War II. You don't need to specifically seek out tourist attractions; just stroll around, watch the ships, feel the sea breeze, or enjoy a bowl of bouillabaisse by the dock, and you'll experience the city's lively atmosphere.

In the mid-19th century, the architect Esperandieu was invited to expand the church. The tall dome, colorful marble decorations and wonderful mosaics inside create a magnificent and majestic effect. Unlike other churches, the walls inside the church are decorated with paintings, tarot cards, model ships and war medals donated by believers, and there are even ship models hanging, highlighting the nautical characteristics of Marseille.

While strolling through the old street, I stumbled upon a handmade soap workshop. The craftsman used locally sourced plant oils to make the soap, and you could choose your favorite floral scent. They even embossed a custom pattern on it for you. The price was cheaper than the trendy soaps online, yet the craftsman put a lot of care into it. While waiting for the soap to be finished, I could watch the craftsman stir the soap, the slow, deliberate process filled with the warmth of handmade work. I bought a bar to take home, and every time I washed my hands, I could smell the subtle herbal fragrance, which was much more pleasant than mass-produced chemical soaps. Each time I used it, I was reminded of the leisurely time I spent strolling through the old street, making it far more meaningful than buying bulk souvenirs.
