Shubao Tower

4.6/5
105 reviews
Shubao Tower, originally named Tiecheng Pagoda and known as "Guangmu Jielie" in the Dai language, is named after the former Dai village of Jielie where it was built. It is one of the older Dai Buddhist pagodas in Mangshi. Legend has it that the local chieftain built this pagoda during the Qing Dynasty to commemorate a military victory. The pagoda is a solid brick structure standing 11.6 m tall, with an octagonal base supporting a conical, bead-shaped body. The finial's rings and vase point toward the sky, with smaller pagodas standing at each of the four corners. The stone carvings of the mythical "Gatuo" beasts on the base still retain the traditional charm of Dai Buddhist pagodas. What truly made it famous throughout western Yunnan is the spectacle formed by the pagoda and the tree intertwined for over a century: it is said that abodhi tree seedlanded in the dust on the pagoda's top, carried by bird droppings. It took root and sprouted, with the roots cascading down the pagoda walls. Over time, they completely enveloped the entire structure. Today, the dense canopy covers the top of the pagoda like an umbrella, and the gnarled roots coil down the body. From a distance, the pagoda appears hidden within the tree; up close, the tree seems to grow from the pagoda. The tree wraps around the pagoda, and the pagoda embraces the tree, interdependent and inseparable. The bodhi tree is considered a sacred tree in Dai Buddhist culture, and a tree growing atop a pagoda adds even more significance.Mangshi · 420m from downtown

It is a central hub for local leisure and cultural performances. The landmark buildings on the square each feature distinct ethnic characteristics: the Munao Zongge pillars symbolizing Jingpo culture, the Water-Splashing Dragon Pavilion and Welcome Gate in the style of Dai architecture, and the China-Myanmar Friendship Hall, which was completed in 2006. Mangshi is adjacent to Myanmar, and the China-Myanmar Friendship Hall reflects the city's border location, making the entire square an open-air space for showcasing ethnic culture. The square also features a musical fountain. When the colorful lights turn on at night, the water feature and ethnic architecture complement each other. Funny Factory was formerly the Mangshi Machinery Factory, built in 1956, and was transformed in 2017 into a trendy district integrating food, cultural and creative products, and entertainment. The mottled old brick walls and industrial-style factory framework have been preserved, complemented by rows of retro neon signs and graffiti walls, where a sense of history and industrial memories blend together. The park covers an area of 37,000 square meters and includes themed areas such as a retro street, a starry night market, and a food court, bringing together over 300 shops. Dai-style barbecue is grilled to order, with spices that carry the unique flavor of Mangshi; don't miss the paoluda for dessert, and you can also find border flavors like Burmese-style tossed pancakes. After eating, you can browse the handicraft stalls; Dai brocade, wood carvings, silver jewelry, and creative trinkets make for great local souvenirs. The park also features game arcades, pool halls, cinemas, and livehouses, with many stall owners being local young entrepreneurs, and the park has been designated as a provincial-level night culture and tourism consumption cluster. Strolling through theStarry Night Marketat night to taste Dai-style barbecue and border snacks, and enjoying the district view where retro neon signs blend with industrial-style factory buildings, is the core experience here.Mangshi · 1.8 km from downtown
Bodhi Temple

Bodhi Temple

44 reviews
Bodhi Temple is a Theravada Buddhist temple in the Dai region, known in the Dai language as "Zhuangxiang," meaning "Gem Temple." It was first built in the 16th year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1677) and was named after a tall bodhi tree that once stood in front of the temple. Over the past 300-plus years, it has repeatedly suffered from war and damage, being destroyed and rebuilt multiple times. Today, it remains a place for local Dai believers to worship daily. The temple consists of three parts: the main hall, the scripture library, and the ordination pavilion, covering an area of approx. 3,600 m². Although not large in scale, it is exquisite in every detail. The main hall features a Dai-style stilt base, while the roof uses the Han-style hip-and-gable technique, with multi-layered eaves stacked on top, blending Dai and Han architectural styles into one single hall. Inside the hall, a statue of Shakyamuni Buddha stands in the center, flanked by the legendary Dai male deity "Weishizhong" and female deity "Langwateli." A pair of stone-carved mythical beasts called "Gatuo" on both sides of the main hall are said to be unique creatures specifically guarding the hall, with a design rarely seen elsewhere. The Dai artworks from different eras collected in the temple, such as scriptures, paper-cuts, and murals, are also worth a closer look.Mangshi · 416m from downtown

Judging from the formation age of the strata, Xianfo Cave belongs to the limestone of the Mengga Formation of the Middle Jurassic System of the Mesozoic Era, which has a history of more than 140 million years. The cave is 2.8 kilometers long and has a vertical height difference of more than 200 meters. Its peculiarity lies in that it almost encompasses all the geological landscapes of karst landforms. These caves are magnificent in shape, exquisite in shape, or Buddha or immortal, or like bamboo shoots and forests, and the landscape is lifelike and vivid. The sound, light and electricity technology used in the lights in the cave make the cave appear more colorful, with fairy mist lingering and looming.Mangshi · 13.7 km from downtown

I climbed Leiya Rang Mountain at 5 PM. The 108 steps were flanked by golden dragons cascading down the slope, and I arrived at the pagoda just in time for sunset. The 76-meter-high Meng Huan Golden Pagoda is gilded, and the setting sun cast a golden glow, enhancing its shimmering quality. Walking clockwise around the prayer wheel along the prayer corridor, the wind chimes on the pagoda's roof jingled in the breeze, a sound that could be heard throughout half of Mangshi. Standing on the viewing platform for a 360° panoramic view was truly exhilarating—below me stretched the terraced houses of the Dai ethnic minority in the Mangshi plain, while in the distance, mountain mists clung to the border. Turning my head, I could even frame the pure white Meng Huan Silver Pagoda across the valley; the gold and silver pagodas facing each other across the valley created a much more photogenic scene than photographing just one pagoda alone. The 7 PM lighting was a hidden climax, transforming the entire pagoda from golden to a warm orange, as if someone had lit a fire inside it. Looking back on the way down, the golden pagoda floated in the night, instantly capturing the slow-paced, borderland spirit of Mangshi. A word of caution: the towers are extremely reflective during the day, so be sure to go in the evening; you need to take off your shoes before entering the main hall, and wearing sandals is the easiest way; allow 2 hours for visiting both the Gold and Silver Towers.

Definitely worth a visit! The reflection of the Silver Pagoda in the water makes for great photos, but the queue is long and moves quite quickly, with a 5-minute time limit per person. Near the Silver Pagoda, there's a viewing platform offering a panoramic view of the Golden Pagoda opposite; it's breathtaking at sunset – don't miss it!

On January 7, 2026, I finally visited this tree-encased pagoda attraction that I'd been wanting to see for so long. Admission is free. The area is quite small, and new residential buildings, all 20 stories high, are under construction nearby. I imagine they'll affect the view when they're finished. The tree is enormous; it's a Bodhi tree, and the pagoda is nestled within its trunk. The tree and pagoda are tightly integrated, completely merging into one—a truly rare spectacle. Five to ten minutes is enough for a visit and some photos.

The architectural style of Mangshi Square is unique, integrating the traditional cultural elements of the Dai and Jingpo ethnic groups. The roofs of the buildings in the square are all glowing with golden light, and the entire square presents an exotic Burmese style. These buildings are not only beautiful and generous, but also carry rich historical and cultural connotations. A good place for citizens to relax and have fun. Citizens will do morning exercises here early in the morning, and it will be more lively in the evening. Citizens will play chess and cards, dance square dances, etc. here, enjoying a leisurely time. Unlike the square dances that everyone knows in the mainland, there is no annoying noise here, but dancing to the beautiful folk music. It is not only a kind of appreciation, but you will definitely have the desire to join if you are there. There are flame trees planted around the square, and the flame flowers in autumn are really beautiful; there are also coffee shops and restaurants; there are all kinds of local delicacies in the residential area not far away, and you can eat happily in the morning or in the evening.

It's huge, covering an entire mountain. There are shuttle buses to and from the mountain. The jungle adventure is also good, with a particularly long walkway. The package ticket includes a slide down the mountain, which is quite nice. You can get up close to the peacocks in the peacock garden, and you can buy feathers at the small shops nearby. They're cheaper than other places! 👍🏻 Apparently, there are over 10,000 peacocks inside. I saw enough on my first day; afterwards, I got tired of seeing peacocks at other attractions. 😂 It's definitely worth it. Getting a taxi is also quite convenient.

I went in to visit it. It is one of the oldest temples in Mangshi. The temple is not big, but it is named after the big Bodhi tree in front of the temple. The roof of the Buddha Hall in the middle adopts the Han style of Xieshan, and the bottom is the Dai stilt loft building. You need to take off your shoes when entering the Buddha Hall, and you cannot wear short skirts or shorts. The Buddha Hall is covered with carpets and the statue of Sakyamuni is magnificent. There are also a precept hall and a scripture building next to it. When I came back, there were even aunties dancing square dance inside.

A fun and worthwhile hidden gem! You can challenge yourself on the glass walkway, sample cave-aged wine, and enjoy stunning mountain and cave views. It's a truly unique place, with an underground river inside the cave that even raises koi fish – a great spot for making a wish.
