Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi

4.8/5

Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi stands on Elia Hill on the left bank of the Mtkvari River and is the main cathedral of the Georgian Orthodox Church. The church adopts the traditional Georgian cross-dome architectural style, with the central dome covered in gold leaf and a gilded cross standing at the top, reaching a total height of nearly 100 m including the underground section. Thanks to its massive size and commanding position, its golden dome can be seen from almost anywhere in the city of Tbilisi. The interior of the church is also worth a close look. In the northeast corner, there is a mosaic icon of the Virgin Mary; the southeast corner houses a display case with a cross and a handwritten Bible; and the northwest corner displays a model of the holy city of Jerusalem made of mica. The church also has several chapels underground, and the main murals were painted by contemporary Georgian artists in a traditional style. In addition to the main cathedral, the entire complex includes auxiliary facilities such as a separate bell tower, a monastery, and a seminary, which are quite impressive in scale. As the mother church of the Georgian Orthodox Church, the cathedral hosts Orthodox rituals and religious activities all year round. The interior murals and mosaic decorations create a solemn religious atmosphere, and from the cathedral's platform, you can overlook the city of Tbilisi and the scenery on both banks of the Kura River.Tbilisi · 53.9 km from Manavi

Monastery of St. Nino at Bodbe is situated on a hillside shaded by cypress trees on the outskirts of the town of Sighnaghi. It is an Orthodox monastery where nuns still live and practice, and it is one of the important pilgrimage sites in Georgia. The main structure is a basilica-style church dedicated to Saint George, originally built between the 9th–11th centuries. It features a simple stone exterior and preserves frescoes from various periods inside. The shrine of Saint Nino is located on the south side of the church, where believers light candles and pray year-round. Beside it stands a three-story bell tower built in the 19th century, and a new, larger cathedral has been built within the grounds to accommodate the flow of pilgrims. Today, it remains an important pilgrimage site in Georgia, attracting local believers and visitors from all over.Sighnaghi · 41 km from Manavi

Sighnaghi Wall encircles the town of Sighnaghi in the Kakheti region of eastern Georgia and was built in the 18th century by order of King Erekle II. It is not a typical aristocratic castle, but rather a refuge where villagers from the surrounding area could take shelter collectively: the wall stretches for several km along the ridge, connecting over 20 towers and several arched gates. The main tower also houses the small St. Stephen's Church, which was a favorite of King Erekle II during his lifetime. Today, it is not only an important historical and cultural heritage site but also a popular spot for enjoying the local natural scenery. From the wall, you can overlook the town's buildings with red-tiled roofs, the expansive Alazani Valley, and the distant Caucasus Mountains.Sighnaghi · 39.7 km from Manavi

Bridge of Peace is a pedestrian bridge over the Kura River in downtown Tbilisi, featuring an arched body with a steel frame and glass canopy. The bridge is approximately 150m long, connecting Rike Park on the riverbank with the streets of the Old Town, and is also considered a pedestrian passage between the new city and the old city. It was designed by an Italian architect. The entire steel structure was prefabricated in Italy and then transported to Tbilisi for on-site assembly. After its completion in 2010, it quickly became a highly recognizable modern landmark of the city. Its rounded, undulating shape is often compared to a marine creature arching its back, which is why it earned the nickname "Shrimp Bridge."Tbilisi · 54.6 km from Manavi

Ananuri Fortress Complex is located on the banks of the Aragvi River, approx. 70 km north of Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, and adjacent to the Zhinvali Reservoir. It is a nearly unavoidable stop when traveling north along the Georgian Military Highway toward Kazbegi. Since the 13th century, this has been a castle and military fortress for the feudal lords of the Aragvi dynasty, with the existing walls and main structures mostly dating back to the 16th–17th centuries. It consists of two castles, upper and lower, and continuous walls. The lower castle with its round tower is now just ruins, while the side along the ridge, along with the square Sheupovari tower, is well-preserved. Climbing the tower offers a panoramic view of the turquoise Zhinvali Reservoir and the mountains on the opposite bank. The scene featuring the walls, church domes, and the surrounding landscape makes this a popular location for travelers in Georgia.Ananuri · 79.9 km from Manavi

Tbilisi sea is a large artificial reservoir located in the northeastern suburbs of Tbilisi. Built in the 1950s, it still serves as a source of urban water supply. Beaches, lawns, and walking paths are distributed around the lake, making it a popular spot for locals to cool off and play in the water during the summer: some sunbathe on the beach or go swimming, while others have picnics or play beach volleyball. Sailboats, jet skis, and water skis can often be seen crossing the lake, and interested visitors can also find places to experience water sports by the lakeside. In the evening, the lake surface reflects the distant mountains and the setting sun, making it very pleasant to sit on the shore and watch the sunset.Tbilisi · 51.5 km from Manavi

The most striking feature of the church is undoubtedly its pure gold-clad dome, dazzling in the sunlight and exuding a gentle solemnity when illuminated at night. It's worth noting that the church's construction was primarily funded by donations from ordinary citizens—it's not just a building, but a symbol of Georgians rediscovering their faith and solidifying their national identity after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Sighnaghi is a beautiful, mysterious and legendary tourist town in the east. It is also known as the Royal Town. It was the seat of the Georgian royal family in the second century BC. Because there is a marriage registration agency that works 24 hours a day (but in fact, the marriage registration agency is not open 24 hours a day), Sighnaghi is also called the City of Love by the locals. The town has preserved most of the city walls and 23 towers from the 18th century.

As the most important monastery of the Orthodox Church in Georgia, the tomb of St. Nino is in the monastery. St. Nino was the first person to spread the Orthodox Church to Georgia, so this monastery is of great significance!

The ancient city walls of Sighnaghi are the symbol of this "town of love," built around a mountain ridge that embraces the entire town. · Construction Period: Late 18th century (circa 1772) · Builder: King Erekler II of Georgia · Core Purpose: As a defensive fortification to protect the area from invasion · Original Size: Approximately 4-4.5 kilometers in length, with 23 towers and several gates · Preservation Status: Parts of the walls are well-preserved; they have been restored in recent years. · Defensive Features: Located on a mountaintop, the walls offer stunning views overlooking the Alazani Valley. · Visual Style: Encircling the town, they create a picturesque landscape together with the red-roofed stone houses.

The Mother Fortress is located high in Georgia, from where you can see the whole of Georgia. In the evening, you can take a cable car up the mountain to wait for the sun to set and watch the sunset. The temperature in Tbilisi at night is only over 20 degrees in this season, which is really comfortable.

We stopped at Ananuri on the way along the Georgian Military Highway in July. The fortress sits right by the water with mountains behind it — a very picturesque spot. Inside there's an old church, and you can climb the towers for views over the reservoir. Entry is free. It gets crowded, especially during the day, but the grounds are large enough. Easy to combine with a trip to Kazbek — it's right on the way. I'd recommend making a stop.

The weather with sunny skies all day seems to wash away anyone's melancholy. Even in the middle of summer, the breeze makes the hot summer mild and pleasant. So far, I really like it here and I also like to continue to stay.
