Old City

4.6/5
108 reviews
Old City is a walled ancient city in the heart of Jerusalem. Covering less than 1 square kilometer, it is a place with a high concentration of holy sites for Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The Old City is traditionally divided into 4 different quarters, each with a distinct atmosphere: the Jewish Quarter has tidy streets and preserves the ruins of the Cardo from the Roman-Byzantine period; in the Christian Quarter, the Way of the Cross - Via Dolorosa, which extends from the Lion's Gate to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, connects 14 stations. The final stations are located within the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which is believed to be the site of Jesus' crucifixion and burial and welcomes pilgrims from all over the world year-round; in the bustling area, the market streets extending inward from the Damascus Gate are lined with stalls selling spices, sweets, olive wood carvings, and more; the Armenian Quarter is much quieter, where painted ceramic workshops are a long-standing traditional craft. The Temple Mount, located on a high platform in the southeast of the Old City, stands apart from the 4 quarters. The golden-domed Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque are both located within this compound. The golden dome is particularly striking in the sunlight and is a highly recognizable landmark on the Old City's skyline; the Western Wall on the west side of the compound is a holy site for Jewish prayer, where many visitors tuck notes with their wishes into the cracks of the stones. The Old City is best explored on foot, with many cobblestone paths, steps, and slopes. When entering religious sites such as churches and mosques, please ensure your shoulders and knees are covered; early mornings and evenings have fewer crowds and softer light, making it easier to avoid the rush and capture beautiful photos.Jerusalem · 1.9 km from downtown

A very interesting and lively place to get lost in. The old city is divided into different religious quarters so it's fascinating to see how the quarters differ and how everyone mingles.

Who would believe that a country with such beautiful scenery and luxurious architecture is actually a warmongering country? It is a miracle that there is still such a beautiful city after decades of war. I wish the world peace and no war.

In the north of the Old City of Jerusalem, it is said that Judas betrayed Jesus here. There is a tree that is more than 2,000 years old, which is very historical. There is also a stone word "peace" spelled on the ground in the courtyard. It is now also a church.
