Arco de Santa Catalina
The Arco de Santa Catalina is a colorful historical landmark, its yellow arched walls framing the cobblestone streets of the old city. Built in the late 17th century, the arch allowed the nuns of the convent to pass between the inner courtyard and the school buildings without being seen by passersby. The arched bridge-like passageway resolved the separation between residence and function and unexpectedly became the visual landmark it is today. Above the arch, a bell tower stands quietly. Its clock face not only records the passage of time but also bears witness to the city's numerous earthquakes and reconstructions.
