The Houston Space Center, located in Houston, Texas, is the official visitors center of NASA's Johnson Space Center. From the Apollo moon landing to the Space Shuttle era, most U.S. manned spacecraft launched from Florida, and flight command after launch was primarily handled by the adjacent Johnson Space Center. After the Apollo 11 lunar module landed on the moon in 1969, the message transmitted back to Earth, "Houston, this is Quiet Base," was sent to the control team here. The movie "Apollo 13" popularized the phrase "Houston, we're in trouble," which was based on a real space emergency handled by the Houston ground team. The main attractions inside the museum are mostly real objects that have been to space: the Starship exhibit displays the Apollo 17 command module that carried out the lunar landing mission, the return capsule of the Mercury and Gemini program, the training module used by astronauts to prepare for the Skylab space station, and a lunar rock that can be touched—there are only a handful of lunar rocks in the world that the public can touch; the spacesuit exhibit features a large number of real intravehicular and extravehicular suits that were actually worn, including the lunar suit worn by Peter Conrad during his lunar walk on Apollo 12. In the outdoor Independence Plaza, a real Boeing 747 Space Shuttle transport plane and a replica of the Space Shuttle "Independence" are stacked on top of each other, and both aircraft can be entered for viewing; next to them is a Falcon 9 rocket booster that carried out a cargo mission to the International Space Station. The signature experience is the NASA tram tour, with multiple lines leading to different areas of the Johnson Space Center: you can walk along the elevated walkway at the astronaut training facility for panoramic views of the full-size spacecraft and space station simulator; visit the restored historical mission control hall from the Apollo era, showcasing the original moon landing; and get up close to the Saturn V rocket, a massive structure over 100 meters long, on display at Rocket Park—one of the few remaining intact Saturn V rockets in the world. It's recommended to allow at least half a day for the tour; tram departure time slot are limited, and seats on popular lines are scarce; queues are common at Independence Square during peak hours, so plan your visit early after entering the facility; the exhibit where you can touch lunar rocks is located inside the Starships exhibit and is easily missed; meeting astronauts and hearing their stories of space travel is a long-standing activity, so check the time slot for the day.Houston · 40.3 km from Galveston
