Zhalong Ecotourism Area

4.6/5
5.6k reviews
Zhalong Ecotourism Area is located over 30 km southeast of Qiqihar city. It is one of the world's largest reed wetlands and the homeland of red-crowned cranes. The red-crowned crane is an endangered bird species, with fewer than 2,000 remaining worldwide. From March to October each year, about 400 red-crowned cranes migrate to Zhalong Wetland near the observation deck for breeding and resting. Here, visitors can admire the graceful figures of these cranes—either soaring in flight or wading through reeds in search of food. Every year, numerous photography enthusiasts come to capture these beautiful scenes. The crane flight training is a signature attraction of the scenic area, with approximately 20-30 red-crowned cranes participating in each session. You'll see a group of red-crowned cranes in the distance begin their takeoff run and flight under the guidance of handlers waving poles, circling briefly in the air before returning to the training area. Since the training area is some distance from the crane observation deck, photography enthusiasts should prepare telephoto lenses to capture spectacular shots. In addition to red-crowned cranes, you can also spot rare birds like Siberian cranes, hooded cranes, white-naped cranes, and demoiselle cranes here. The red-crowned crane flight training lasts only about 2 minutes, so be sure to arrive early. June to September is the best time to observe cranes, as there are more red-crowned cranes during this period. Some red-crowned cranes no longer migrate, so you can still see a few cranes in winter, though rarely. The reserve is a reed wetland with crisscrossing waterways, scattered lakes and marshes, and long wooden boardwalks built over the water. The attraction is quite large, and a full visit usually takes half a day. From the entrance to the crane observation area, there is a long stretch that can be covered by shuttle bus. The round-trip fare is CNY 10 per person. Board directly after ticket inspection and get off in front of the reception hall, then walk 2 km (about 30 mins) to reach the flight training platform. Upon arrival at the attraction, it is advisable to check the flight training schedule first. If pressed for time, you can take electric bikes directly to the terminal station, then walk approx. 20 minutes to the crane release boardwalk to await the flight training. In case of special weather conditions (such as strong winds, rain, high temperatures, or other force majeure factors), the flight training may be less effective or canceled. You can also take a cruise (CNY 50 per person, approx. 20 minutes) through the reed marshes within the attraction, with the terminal point at the crane release boardwalk.Qiqihar · 66 km from Fuyu

Harbin Drug Group Pharmaceutical Factory 6

Harbin Drug Group Pharmaceutical Factory 6 is an old factory complex in Harbin, now a popular check-in spot dubbed the "Louvre of Northeast China." The main building, completed in 2004 with construction and decoration costs nearing CNY 100 million, bears a striking resemblance to France's Louvre, blending classical, Baroque, and Rococo European styles. Its exterior features intricate three-dimensional carvings and reliefs, with columns, doors, and windows each showcasing unique designs, creating a majestic vista from afar. Inside, the scene shifts dramatically: layers of golden ornaments adorn the space, and a massive crystal chandelier cascades from the upper floors to the second-floor hall. The corridors display European oil paintings and sculptures, earning it the playful nickname "Versailles of the Northeast." The building also houses a printmaking museum, with multiple exhibition halls showcasing works by printmakers from Heilongjiang and across China, worth lingering over. Founded in 1977, this historic pharmaceutical factory was once famous for products like Gaizhonggai, Yandi, and Hutong. After relocating entirely in 2021, the old site lay idle until reopening to the public in 2024. Its "palace-like" complex quickly went viral, attracting over a million visitors to date, making it a flagship destination for industrial tourism in Harbin. For the best experience, enter through the northeast gate, explore from the upper floors downward, and don't miss the printmaking exhibits, corridor paintings, or the grand chandelier. The main building's frontal view is partially obscured by an overpass and heavy traffic, making full shots challenging, but the exterior carvings, ground-floor hall, and colonnades offer excellent photo opportunities for a leisurely stroll.China · Harbin

Aershan National Forest Park

Aershan National Forest Park

7.9
4.3/5
6.8k reviews
Aershan National Forest Park is hidden deep in the forested mountains of the southwestern Greater Khingan Range, known for its volcanic landforms, lakes, and forests. Ancient volcanic eruptions left behind a series of geological views here: craters filled with water to form lakes, lava-blocked river channels creating dammed lakes, vast stone beaches paved with black basalt, and deep canyons carved by fractured lava belts. The Halaha River meanders through the park, with over 80% of its area covered by forests dominated by Daurian larch and birch trees. Shitanglin is a highly recognizable stop: on the black lava beach with almost no soil, larch trees root into rock crevices, and moss and lichens cover the stone surface, like walking into a natural volcanic geological museum. Tuofengling Heavenly Lake requires climbing a flight of stairs along a boardwalk; reaching the summit allows you to overlook this crater lake with a water surface elevation of nearly 1300 m, its overall outline resembling a crouching camel. Arxan Heavenly Lake, on the other hand, has no visible rivers flowing in or out, and its water level shows no obvious fluctuations throughout the year. The Halaha River rushes through the chaotic rocks of Santan Gorge, connecting three deep pools: Woniu Pool, Hushi Pool, and Yuexin Pool. Azalea Lake is named for the Xing'an azaleas that bloom along its shores in mid-to-late May each year; if you catch it while the lingering snow has not yet melted, the red flowers against the white snow offer a unique scene. The Chai River originates in the Grand Canyon area within the park, where black volcanic rocks are scattered across the valley floor; the stream winds through them, and you can walk down the wooden boardwalk in the forest to take a closer look. Seasonally, from mid to late September, birch trees and larches gradually turn golden, creating the most vibrant colors in the attraction. In winter, the unfrozen section of the Halaha River remains ice-free, with frost-covered trees lining its banks and herds of cattle often drinking from the river at dawn. The attractions are distributed along a single road with driving distances between them, making self-drive or private charter tours more convenient. Both Tianchi Lake and Tuofengling Tianchi require climbing steps, so comfortable shoes are recommended. The forest area experiences significant temperature variations between morning and evening, so bringing a jacket is advisable even during summer and fall visits.China · Arxan

The Sun Island Scenic Area is a small island located on the north bank of the Songhua River in Harbin City. In the early years, the Manchu people fished and hunted here. The Songhua River is rich in squid. In the Manchu language, the pronunciation of this type of fish is very similar to the pronunciation of "Sun" in Chinese. It has been known as "Sun Island" ever since the name was passed down a long time ago. During the reign of Emperor Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty, Sun Island was developed and utilized as a naval battalion, and was later used as a base for the navy to reconnoiter and train. Today, the natural scenery of Sun Island is exceptionally beautiful, and the landscape inside the park represents a perfect interpretation of the harmony between humankind and nature. The island has plenty of European villa buildings, where the Russian people come to spend their summer breaks.China · Harbin

When you visit Zhongyang Street, you must taste its authentic Russian cuisine, and the celebrated Modern brand popsicles. Finally checked out Harbin Ice and Snow World! Seeing it in person is the true meaning of a real-life ice and snow fairytale kingdom. The enormous ice castles and towers are all sculpted from ice blocks, crystal clear during the day, and transform into a breathtaking spectacle when the lights come on at night, bathing the entire park in vibrant colors. The shuttle bus ticket is a must-buy because the main gate is really far away. It seems like it's essential, especially since you have to walk a long way after getting off the shuttle. There's a speedboat that goes directly there, but it's unnecessary. Although the walk is tiring, the scenery is beautiful, and you can see several red-crowned cranes strolling along the roadside every now and then.

The weather wasn't great the day I went, so overall I'd only give it three stars. It would probably be much more beautiful with better weather. First, the scenic area isn't close to the city center, so it's very inconvenient without a car. It's quite large, and walking around can be tiring. Second, there are a few castles inside that are indeed beautiful, but that's about it. There's not much inside the castles. Overall, the ticket price is too high. The scenic area itself is okay, but considering the ticket price, it's not really worth it.

It's worth visiting both day and night, but the best time to go inside is during the day when there are musical performances. At night, enjoy the exterior lights. The entire square is quite beautiful, but at night, the lights of the surrounding buildings seem too bright, overshadowing the church and creating a sense of intrusion.
