I used to travel around Turkey and France by buying local SIM cards, but it could get quite expensive and inconvenient. Arriving in Beijing on New Year's Eve, luckily the roads were all clear. Even the tour guide was remarking how quickly we got to the hotel; it seems traffic jams are a major problem in Beijing. Fortunately, the weather was also on our side during our trip – no smog. It was really great! We stayed in a nice five-star hotel, and had a wonderful New Year.
