The Pingshan Lake Grand Canyon is hailed as a geological wonder "comparable to the Grand Canyon in Colorado, USA." The scenic area covers approximately 95 square kilometers, featuring deep canyons, rugged peaks, and winding ravines as its main attractions.
The biggest highlight here is the immersive canyon exploration experience. You can descend deep into the valley along the boardwalk and look up at the narrow rock crevice known as "A Thread of Sky." At the spacious valley floor, two unique transportation options are offered: first, driving a desert off-road vehicle to feel the thrill of speeding through the gullies, or second, riding a camel at a leisurely pace to experience the unhurried rhythm of the ancient Silk Road. Both methods allow you to get up close to these richly colored rock walls—ranging from deep ochre to golden yellow—formed by hundreds of millions of years of geological activity, from different perspectives.
Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological Park
The Qicai Danxia Scenic Area offers a completely different visual feast. As a national 5A-level tourist attraction and UNESCO Global Geopark, it's renowned for its vibrant colors described as "rich as cinnabar and brilliant as morning clouds."
The hills here display vibrant colors like red, yellow, orange, white, and bluish-gray under sunlight, with layered textures resembling waves. The scenic area features multiple viewing platforms, among which the "Rainbow Glow Platform" becomes most enchanting at sunset, making it an ideal photography spot. Beyond classic sightseeing, you can opt for hot air balloon or helicopter rides to admire the breathtaking panorama from above. This location has also served as a filming site for many renowned movies and TV shows. In 2025, Zhangye's Danxia Landform was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, receiving global recognition for its outstanding value.
