Pingshan Lake Grand Canyon
Pingshan Lake Grand Canyon, located in Ganzhou District, Zhangye City, Gansu Province, is a natural wonder formed by millions of years of crustal movement, wind erosion, and water erosion. It is also one of the three major Danxia landform scenic areas in Zhangye. The entire scenic area covers approximately 95-100 square kilometers, integrating Danxia landforms, Yardang landforms, and canyon landscapes, and is hailed as a "living textbook of geological history." The canyon's geological structure belongs to the red bed landform, with rocks formed from the Mesozoic to the Cenozoic eras. The rock layers, from the Cambrian to the Cenozoic, are layered and varied in color, clearly recording the history of Earth's millions of years of change. The main color here is ochre red, and the mountains often exhibit unique conical or columnar shapes.
Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park
The Rainbow Mountains Scenic Area offers a completely different visual feast. As a national 5A-level tourist attraction and a world geopark, it is famous for its magnificent colors, described as "as red as cinnabar and as bright as the morning glow."
Under the sunlight, the hills here display a vibrant array of colors, including red, yellow, orange, white, and bluish-gray, layered and rippling like waves. The scenic area boasts several viewing platforms, with the "Seven-Rainbow Sunset Platform" being particularly enchanting at sunset and a superb spot for photography. Besides classic sightseeing, you can also choose to take a hot air balloon or helicopter ride for an unparalleled and breathtaking aerial view. This area has also served as a filming location for many famous movies and television series. In 2025, the Zhangye Colorful Hills were included in the World Natural Heritage Tentative List, gaining global recognition for their value.
