When you go to the information center right next to Cologne Central Station, they will exchange it for a paper ticket and tell you to fill in your name, start date, etc. yourself, and explain that the ticket will be stamped by the machine when you first board the train or bus.★

I traveled using a Eurail pass. It was cheaper than other sites, including points redemption, so I used it. I recommend it if you travel long distances a lot. I'll definitely consider it for my next trip to Europe.
