Itinerary
Embark on an unforgettable adventure through the legendary Samaria Gorge, the longest and one of the most impressive gorges in Europe. Departing from Rethymno, Bali or Panormo, we travel toward the Omalos Plateau, located high in the heart of the White Mountains at 1,140 meters, where the entrance of the gorge awaits.

Your hike begins surrounded by dramatic scenery, ancient forests, and the raw beauty of Crete's National Park, protected since 1962 and recognized by UNESCO. The trail stretches for 16 km and takes about 5–6 hours to complete at your own pace, with no need to follow a group. Much of the walk is under the shade of towering cliffs and trees.

As you descend through the gorge, admire vertical rock walls reaching up to 350 meters, discover abandoned mountain villages, fill your bottle with cool spring water, and keep an eye out for the rare Cretan wild goat, the Kri-Kri. You will also cross the famous “Iron Gates,” the narrowest point of the gorge, just 3 meters wide.

Your journey ends in the seaside village of Agia Roumeli, where you can cool off with a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear Libyan Sea and enjoy a well-deserved meal in a traditional taverna (meal not included). Later in the afternoon, you will take a boat along the southern coast to Chora Sfakion, where the bus will be waiting to bring you back.

Crossing Samaria Gorge is more than a hike, it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. As the Cretans say, “Whoever walks Samaria has truly seen Crete.
