Attractions and Activities: Phnom Bakheng Temple (At your own expense) Bakheng Mountain is near Angkor Wat Temple. It is located about 1.5 kilometers northwest of Angkor Wat. It is a Hindu temple mountain dedicated to Shiva, and was built in the 9th century by King Yasovarman I. It is the oldest temple in the Angkor Archaeological Park, and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Cambodia. The temple is built on a 79-meter-tall hill, and has five sandstone sanctuaries on the top level. The sanctuaries are arranged in a quincunx pattern, with one in the center and one at each corner of the level's square. The temple is also surrounded by 108 small towers, which have mostly collapsed. Phnom Bakheng is a popular spot for sunset viewing, as it offers panoramic views of the Angkor Archaeological Park. It is also a popular place to watch the sunrise, but the views are not as good as at Angkor Wat. If you are visiting the Angkor Archaeological Park, I recommend visiting Phnom Bakheng in the late afternoon to catch the sunset. 1 hr(s)
