Reviews: Gubei Water Town Day Trip - & Optional Night Tour of Simatai Great Wall & Optional Lunch
Guest User2026-03-26
This was a wonderful tour. The city of Gubei is incredibly beautiful, especially at night when the lights come on. I don't regret taking the tour to this section of the Simatai Great Wall; it's not as crowded as Badaling, and you can take great photos without waiting in line. It's worth noting that the tour doesn't include the cable car and boat rides; I had to pay an extra 220 yuan for the daytime cable car and boat ride. I loved our guide, Cindy; she was so helpful and explained everything. It's great that you can wander around the city freely without a group.
Reviews: Private Chartered Tour to Beijing W Town + Great Wall at Simatai - One Vehicle per Family with Admission Tickets Included, Multilingual Driver

Everything went perfectly. We booked a private tour with a driver. The car arrived on time, and the interior was clean and comfortable. We visited the Great Wall of China and the city of Gubeishui Zhen. The wall here is very picturesque, and since there were practically no people around, we were able to fully enjoy the walk. Gubeishui Zhen is a special delight! A very atmospheric city, stylized to resemble the old days, with every detail thought out. I recommend this tour to anyone who wants to spend a day with maximum comfort and benefit!
Reviews: 1-Day Tour to BEIJING W TOWN & Great Wall At Simatai with Optional Private Tour/English-Chinese Guided Tour

Enjoyed the boat ride which took us to the water town from the ticketing center. Simatai wall was not crowded, enjoyed the beautiful scenery. It is recommended to take cable car to save time and energy to hike in between towers at the Wall.  The night time is more scenic than day time at the water town so it is suggested to see the wall first and then enjoy the town. One day is enough to see both places.  Our tour guide Cindy was cooperative and friendly. She managed the entire journey very well. Will definitely recommend her for future trips.
Reviews: Gubei Water Town + Simatai Great Wall Day Tour

We highly recommend this trip. Our guide - Huang Zhong was very friendly. He took us from hotel, treated us with coffee and helped us during whole trip, he bought us tickets with discount. We are grateful for him!☺️ Gubei is very interesting to explore; after all, it looks like a old chinese city and there are lots of cute cats there. We visited in mid-March and the weather was pleasant, with plenty of Chinese food options. The Great Wall of China is a stunning place, offering picturesque views of misty mountains and the Chinese countryside. Highly recommended!

Gubei Water Town is a peaceful ancient town: restored courtyards, quiet canals, excellent local food, and relaxing hot springs. But the real highlight is the Simatai Great Wall towering dramatically above it all. Unlike the busier sections, Simatai retains its wild, unrestored charm—steep, rugged, and incredibly atmospheric. At night it’s spectacularly illuminated, stretching across the mountain ridges like a glowing dragon. With Susie’s calm, knowledgeable guidance, the combination of the charming water town and the majestic Simatai section made this one of our favorite day trips from Beijing. Highly recommend both the destination and requesting Susie as your guide
