Tokyo: Game Boy Mod Workshop in Akihabara (Original/Advance)

Transform a classic Game Boy into your own one-of-a-kind custom console at this hands-on workshop in the heart of Akihabara — Tokyo's iconic gaming and electronics district.

Guided by our English-speaking staff, get hands-on with the inner workings of Nintendo's legendary handheld consoles.

Choose your console when booking: the original Game Boy (DMG-01) that started it all in 1989, or the Game Boy Advance with its wider screen and 32-bit game library.

No technical experience is needed. Knowledgeable guides will walk you through every step of the modification process — carefully disassembling your vintage console, the original Game Boy DMG-01 or a Game Boy Advance depending on the option you select, with your own hands, installing a stunning backlit IPS screen, swapping out buttons, and choosing your own custom shell color. Every unit is fully tested and verified before your session, so you can focus entirely on the fun.

Your guides are friendly, English-speaking staff who love retro games and will be by your side throughout the build. With a small group, there's plenty of time to ask questions, get hands-on help, and chat about your favorite games along the way. Expect a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere shared with fellow gaming fans from around the world.

After completing your build, enjoy a selection of original Game Boy and Game Boy Advance cartridges provided on-site, and play a few classics on your brand new custom console before you head out. Cartridges are also available for purchase on-site, so you can pick up a game to take home with your console.

By the end of the session, you'll leave with a fully working, personalized console you built with your own hands — a Tokyo souvenir you'll actually use for years to come.
