This beginner-friendly workshop is suitable for both adults and children. Located in the heart of Kyoto's sightseeing area, our easily accessible studio offers support from experienced artists.
Begin by learning how to use the tools, understand Japanese characters, and practice the basic strokes. Focus mainly on Kanji, starting with five representative strokes that form the foundation of Kanji writing. Watch as the calligrapher demonstrates the techniques right in front of you.
Next, choose your favorite word or a Kanji character you wish to try. Popular choices include “愛 = Love,” “幸 = Happiness,” and “忍者 = Ninja.” We provide several suggested words to choose from, but you're also welcome to write any word or phrase you like! Simply ask your instructor, and they'll write a sample for you right in front of you.
Then, create your final piece. From a variety of options—such as a folding fan, a decorative board, or a washi postcard—select your favorite and produce a memorable artwork to take home.
Also, you can write your name in Japanese on your final piece.
At the end, have a commemorative photo taken together with your completed artwork.
