One of the most important monuments of orthodox architecture, this monastery was build in 1638 by Matei Basarab, on a small piece of land that sits in the middle of the Caldarusani lake. In the old days, here was established a school of copyists that over the years brought a significant contribution to the creation of the Romanian language.
In the nearby area, called Codrii Vlasiei (The Forests of Vlasia), Vlad Tepes was killed in the treacherous act of his boyars.
