Itinerary Overview:
The active volcano tour departing from Reykjavik, Iceland, will take you to the recent eruption sites of Fagradalsfjall volcano in Geldingadalur Valley and Meradalir volcano. You will witness firsthand the dramatic changes these volcanic eruptions have caused to the landscape. The 2021 eruption lasted for months, while the eruptions in 2022 and 2023 gradually subsided after several weeks. The area remains highly active and fascinating, with three eruptions occurring within just three years! During the exploration, you will have the opportunity to learn about all the volcanic eruptions on the Reykjanes Peninsula since 2021. Your guide will point out notable areas, including the chance to observe the latest Sundhnúkur eruption, which began on December 18, 2023, and subsided three days later. If weather and safety conditions permit, you will also learn about previous eruptions at Fagradalsfjall, Meradalir, and Litli Hrutur volcanoes. We will embark on a hike around the remnants of the 2021 Fagradalsfjall lava field. The first part of the trail is a steep few kilometers, followed by a gradually flatter section, and the final stretch involves mossy and uneven terrain with moderate difficulty. The hike lasts approximately 2 hours, though the duration may vary depending on the route taken during the day. We will get as close as possible to the active volcano, but the distance depends on various factors, including gas levels, weather conditions, and safety warnings issued by rescue teams. In Seltún, you can observe the impact of geothermal water on the environment. Walk along wooden paths winding through colorful ground and rocks between boiling, hissing mud pools and natural hot springs. The air is filled with the sulfurous scent emitted by these hot springs, as underground water dissolves minerals like sulfur from rocks and soil, creating this unique aroma. Two viewing platforms overlook the area, offering a 360-degree perspective (Note: If the schedule runs late, we may skip the Seltún area).
Departure time: 11:00, duration: approximately 7 hours
