Reviews: Gubei Water Town Day Trip - & Optional Night Tour of Simatai Great Wall & Optional Lunch
Guest User2026-03-26
This was a wonderful tour. The city of Gubei is incredibly beautiful, especially at night when the lights come on. I don't regret taking the tour to this section of the Simatai Great Wall; it's not as crowded as Badaling, and you can take great photos without waiting in line. It's worth noting that the tour doesn't include the cable car and boat rides; I had to pay an extra 220 yuan for the daytime cable car and boat ride. I loved our guide, Cindy; she was so helpful and explained everything. It's great that you can wander around the city freely without a group.
Reviews: Private Chartered Tour to Beijing W Town + Great Wall at Simatai - One Vehicle per Family with Admission Tickets Included, Multilingual Driver

Everything went perfectly. We booked a private tour with a driver. The car arrived on time, and the interior was clean and comfortable. We visited the Great Wall of China and the city of Gubeishui Zhen. The wall here is very picturesque, and since there were practically no people around, we were able to fully enjoy the walk. Gubeishui Zhen is a special delight! A very atmospheric city, stylized to resemble the old days, with every detail thought out. I recommend this tour to anyone who wants to spend a day with maximum comfort and benefit!
Reviews: 1-Day Tour to BEIJING W TOWN & Great Wall At Simatai with Optional Private Tour/English-Chinese Guided Tour

Enjoyed the boat ride which took us to the water town from the ticketing center. Simatai wall was not crowded, enjoyed the beautiful scenery. It is recommended to take cable car to save time and energy to hike in between towers at the Wall.  The night time is more scenic than day time at the water town so it is suggested to see the wall first and then enjoy the town. One day is enough to see both places.  Our tour guide Cindy was cooperative and friendly. She managed the entire journey very well. Will definitely recommend her for future trips.

We communicated entirely via WeChat, and the guide, Liu, was incredibly sweet! She even worried about me making it to the bus, knowing I spoke neither English nor Chinese! I took the evening pass; you could upgrade to a day pass on the bus, but I paid extra for the day pass, plus the cable car and boat ride, for an additional 280 yuan. I loved being on the wall both day and night; they were two completely different experiences! The first time, we took the cable car during the day, reached the 5th tower, then climbed up to the 10th tower (it's not easy, but worth it!), then I went down to the 1st tower and back down without the cable car (so it was possible to only take the uphill pass for the day). You can also fly down from the bottom for 80 yuan (another traveler told me this later). In the evening, I immediately climbed up to the 8th tower (it wasn’t easy), but since everyone was running to the 5th tower initially, my appearance was a reward for my efforts) and then I went down to the 5th tower and then left on the cable car.

Everything is great, the city is pleasant, the wall is cool and very beautiful. I recommend taking a boat ride; it's a very scenic ride and you can also see the city in the evening. The only thing I recommend is to definitely take the CABLE CAR BOTH WAYS UP and DOWN; we didn't take the return trip. And in the end, we overpaid a lot. We could have gotten it for 180 yuan roundtrip, but our guide Lucy didn't warn us that there wouldn't be enough time to walk down, and besides, we were very tired. However, for another group, the guide explained everything in more detail about the descent. In the end, we paid 130 yuan for the ascent + 130 yuan for the descent (260 yuan for the whole trip). We overpaid by 80 yuan. If you go on your own, you'll pay even more; all tours with a guide are much cheaper. They only accept Alipay; they don't accept cards or cash.

We chose a package for two with a driver. Thanks to our guide. He picked us up from our hotel on time. The journey with him was comfortable, quiet, and warm. He answered all our questions and even helped us buy medicine at a pharmacy along the way. We then arrived in the city of Gubei, strolled through the old town, and after lunch at a cafe with a beautiful view, we ascended to the cable car. By the way, the cable car ticket to the Great Wall of China is not included in this package. It's worth noting this in the price description. Our driver warned us about this in advance and booked tickets for us. Thanks to him. With their help, we reached the top, where we ascended the wall itself with a stunning view of the mountain beyond. The majesty of this structure is impressive. There were very few people on this section of the wall; we climbed the 9th tower. After exploring to our heart's content, we headed back to the car and had a comfortable ride home. I recommend this package if you're used to traveling in comfort.
