Alfamais one of Lisbon's historic districts, nestled on a hill overlooking the Tagus River, tucked between São Jorge Castle and the river bend. This area survived the Great Lisbon Earthquake and still retains its medieval street layout—winding cobblestone paths and a maze of stone stairways. As you head up the slope, you'll see colorful, old-fashioned houses on both sides, their walls adorned with blue and white tiles, and balconies often draped with laundry and blooming flowers. This is the birthplace of Fado, the national music of Portugal. After nightfall, the sounds of guitars and singing drift from Fado restaurants deep within the alleys, haunting and melodic, creating anAlfamasignature nighttime experience. During the day, the old town features several viewpoints—Miradouro das Portas do Sol and Miradouro de Santa Luzia both face the Tagus River, offering panoramic views of the layered red-tiled roofs and the river in the distance; Miradouro da Graça is situated higher up and often gathers crowds waiting for the sunset in the evening. The yellow Tram 28, which winds through the steep slopes of the old town, is an iconic image of Lisbon. At the top of the old town, you can also visit historic sites such as São Jorge Castle and Lisbon Cathedral.Portugal · Lisbon
Porto Cathedral

Porto Cathedral

7.8
4.7/5
121 reviews
Porto Cathedral stands prominently on a hill in Porto, one of the city's ancient monuments. The facade is almost devoid of decoration, making it quite unique among church architecture: two square bell towers flank the sides, with a Romanesque rose window and a Baroque-era portico set against a plain facade, while the crenellated battlements above give the entire structure a fortress-like appearance. The Baroque loggia on the side facade, designed by Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni, adds a touch of splendor to the exterior. Porto Cathedral stands majestically on the high ground of the old town, one of the ancient buildings still existing in Porto and an important example of Romanesque architecture in Portugal. The cathedral was first built around 1110 and largely completed in the 13th century, with Gothic and Baroque elements added over the following centuries: the Romanesque nave, Gothic cloister, and Baroque loggia coexist within the same structure, making a visit akin to flipping through a three-dimensional architectural history book. As a city landmark that has existed for nearly a millennium, the church was built approx. in 1110, with construction spanning a century. Even today, many intricate architectural features remain fascinating. The square bell towers on either side of the church are quite unique due to their nearly bare facades, while the crenellated structures at the top incorporate castle-like elements. Additionally, the interior features many delightful blue-and-white tile murals, a hallmark of Portuguese architecture.Portugal · Porto

Puerta del Sol

Puerta del Sol is the central square of Madrid, surrounded by many historic buildings. The square was once the place where Napoleon's army invaded Madrid and confronted the citizens. Now it is a place for major parades and gatherings and leisure and entertainment for citizens and tourists. No matter day or night, it is always crowded and full of vitality. Plaza Building The Puerta del Sol square is semicircular, surrounded by houses and buildings, many of which can be called the essence of Madrid's urban architecture. On the south side of Puerta del Sol stands the iconic old postal building (LaCasadeCorreos), an old red and white building in the square that resembles a majestic palace. The bell tower in the middle of the building is very famous. Every New Year's Eve, Madrid people will gather here to celebrate the arrival of the new year by eating 12 grapes symbolizing good luck when the clock strikes 12 midnight. There is a sign on the pedestrian walkway in front of the "zero point sign" postal building, which is marked "zero point" (Kilómetro Cero). All road milestones in Spain are calculated from here, and the house number of the city of Madrid is also here. for the starting point. "Bear and Raspberry Statue" The symbol of Madrid City The "Bear and Raspberry" statue (Estatua del Osoyel Madroño) is located in the east of Puerta del Sol. This statue replaces the previous ruins of Puerta del Sol, and is now a very popular landmark in Madrid. The little bear stood upright, holding the raspberry tree in front of his front paws, lifelike. Now it is also a meeting place for many locals. Statue of Carlos III In the center of the Puerta del Sol Square stands the equestrian statue of Carlos III (EstatuaecuestredeCarlosIII). Next to the statue is a large fountain surrounded by flowers and steps for visitors to rest. In addition, the building itself of the Puerta del Sol (Sol) station on the square is also a highlight. The arched glass building shines in the sun, and the avant-garde shape like a shell is quite eye-catching among the traditional and classical buildings in the square. . Square Activities You can watch and take pictures at will in the square, or you can sit by the fountain, feed the pigeons, and enjoy the wonderful street performers. Puerta del Sol is also a commercial area. You can find flagship stores around Topshop, Sephora, Springfield, and Real Madrid. You can also see the building of the wine cellar TioPepe. The Ingles department store is also close at hand. To the Grand Avenue, to the west is the Callao business district, which is definitely a good place for shopping. In addition, there are many bars and cafes in the alley on the south side of the square, which are very local in Madrid, and the prices are very close to the people. You might as well try the feeling of beer with tapa (Madrid snacks). Puerta del Sol Square is also very lively at night with beautiful scenery at midnight. At the beginning of the lanterns, people are surging. At this time, Puerta del Sol Square may better interpret the essence of Madrid nightlife. Street teenagers dancing in the square, sentimental saxophone players, whispering couples...all are a beautiful scenery. If you happen to come here at midnight, facing the still crowded crowd in the square, and the cheers one after another, please don't be surprised, this city is saying to you in a unique way: Welcome to Puerta del Sol, welcome to Puerta del Sol. Come to sleepless Madrid!Spain · Madrid

España Square

España Square in Seville is located in the tranquil and refreshing Parque de Maria Luisa in the southern part of the city. Its crescent-shaped classical architecture stands elegantly amidst lush greenery, making it a popular leisure spot among Seville's residents. It was built as the core architectural complex for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition, designed by Seville architect Aníbal González. Parque de Maria Luisa welcomed this newly constructed España Square, a crescent-shaped complex consisting of mansions, arch bridges, fountains, and pools. The signature feature of the square is the grid of colorful ceramic niches on the lower level of the arcade: over forty niches each represent a Spanish province, displaying painted tiles depicting the province's map, historical scenes, and portraits of famous figures. Many travelers make a point to find their favorite niche for a seated photo, while the arcade columns are adorned with round plaques of notable figures and coats of arms. Visitors can relax and take photos here or rent a small wooden boat to paddle on the lake, with particularly beautiful scenery at sunset. If you take a sightseeing carriage in the city, España Square is a must-visit spot. Amid the galloping wheels, you can fully enjoy the captivating scenes of the square, whether in motion or at rest.Spain · Seville

Parque de Maria Luisa is a major public green space in Seville, extending along theRio Guadalquivirand covering an area of approx. 400,000 square meters. The park was formerly the garden of the Palacio de San Telmo and was donated to the city of Seville by Infanta Maria Luisa Fernanda in 1893. Starting in 1911, French landscape designer Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier redesigned the garden, using Moorish-style landscaping as a foundation, adding fountains, ponds, glazed tile benches, and pavilions, and planting numerous palm trees, orange trees, and Mediterranean pines to create the overall setting for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition. The semi-circular España Square on the east side of the park is the centerpiece of the exposition, designed by architect Aníbal González, and blends Renaissance, Baroque, and Neo-Mudéjar styles. The square is surrounded by a canal where visitors can rent boats to row on the water. Along the canal, the buildings feature benches made of glazed ceramic tiles, with each set representing a historical scene from a province in Spain. The three pavilions at the southern end of the park were also built for the exposition, each adopting one of three architectural styles: Gothic, Mudéjar, or Renaissance. Today, two of them have become museums: theArchaeological Museumdisplays prehistoric and Roman-era artifacts, including mosaics and sculptures unearthed from the nearby ancient ruins of Italica; while the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions exhibits local ceramics, traditional costumes, and handicraft tools. The park is also dotted with landmarks such as the Bécquer Monument, the Lion Fountain, and the Water Lily Pond.Spain · Seville

Avenida da Liberdade

Avenida da Liberdade is a grand boulevard in Lisbon that starts at Restauradores Square in the south and extends north to Marquis of Pombal Square, featuring a wide roadway. It is known as Lisbon's Champs-Élysées due to its collection of hotels, brand flagship stores, and various embassies. The boulevard is lined with trees, and the pedestrian walkways are paved with black and white cobblestones in traditional Portuguese patterns. Along the way, you will find small gardens, fountains, and statues of figures such as the writer Almeida Garrett, making it a delightful place for a stroll. The history of this avenue is closely linked to the city's reconstruction after the 1755 earthquake: it was originally a walled promenade for the nobility. It wasn't until the city expanded northward in the late 19th century that it was rebuilt into the current avenue, modeled after Parisian boulevards. At the northern roundabout stands the Estatua do Marques de Pombal, honoring the man who led the post-earthquake reconstruction. With Eduardo VII Park in the background, it is a classic vantage point to overlook the entire avenue.Portugal · Lisbon

Located at the western end of Gran Via, just a few steps from the Royal Palace of Madrid, Plaza de España (Madrid) is one of Madrid's more popular attractions, famous for the Monument to Cervantes. There are two striking buildings behind Plaza de España (Madrid): Torre de Madrid and Edificio Espana, the former European high-rises built in 1948. The top floors of both buildings are good places to enjoy panoramic views of Madrid. In the center of the Plaza de España (Madrid), there is a monument to the great Spanish writer Cervantes. The statue of Cervantes sits in front of the monument and overlooks Don Quixote, who is holding a spear and riding a thin horse, and his loyal stout. The statue of the servant Sancho, in addition, two stone statues representing Don Quixote's true love stand on both sides of the monument: the ordinary village girl Ardonsa Rorenzo and the imaginary beautiful Dulcinea Del Tor Poso. The rectangular pool on the square and the high-rise buildings behind the statue cover each other, which makes the statue have the beauty of spatial perspective and is a good location for photography. The sun in Spain is relatively strong, and it is backlit in the morning. It is recommended to shoot from this angle in the afternoon.Spain · Madrid

Park of the Nations is located along the banks of theTagus Riverand was transformed from the site of the 1998 World Expo. This World Expo was themed "The Oceans, a Heritage for the Future" and was held to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the explorer Vasco da Gama's arrival in India. The Vasco da Gama Tower BABYLON 360º within the park and theVasco da Gama Bridgenearby are both named after him. After the World Expo closed, this former industrial shoreline was not left idle but was transformed into a new waterfront district integrating office, cultural, residential, and commercial spaces, often regarded as a successful example of post-Expo site utilization. Strolling along the waterfront promenade that stretches along the river, you can still see many Expo buildings that have been preserved to this day: the Lisbon Oceanarium and the interactive science center, which evolved from the original pavilions, are both located here; the sail-shaped Vasco da Gama Tower BABYLON 360º, the large-span concrete canopy of the Portugal Pavilion, and the white vaulted gallery of the Gare Do Oriente make this an area concentrated with modern architecture in Lisbon, forming a sharp contrast with the narrow stone alleys of the old town. You can also take a sightseeing cable car suspended over the Tagus River to overlook the entire park and the river from above; after nightfall, the bars and restaurants along the river light up, and the lights of theVasco da Gama Bridgein the distance are clearly visible.Portugal · Lisbon

Mercado de San Miguel is a market in Madrid, Spain, that brings together food, culture, and social life. Built in 1916, the construction featuring a wrought-iron frame combined with large glass panels was quite sophisticated for Madrid at the time. Today, it remains one of the city's representative iron structures, and its transparent glass facade makes the entire hall bright and airy, attracting numerous tourists and local residents. Its predecessor was an open-air fish market on the square, which was later converted into a covered market. After being renovated and reopened in 2009, it transformed from a traditional grocery market into a gourmet market themed around Spanish tapas. Since then, Michelin-starred chefs have set up stalls here, serving traditional-style paella. More than 30 stalls are arranged along the atrium, offering everything from seafood shipped directly from the Galician coast and freshly sliced Iberian ham to cheeses, olives, and desserts from all over Spain, bringing almost all the country's signature flavors under one roof.Spain · Madrid

My recent visit to Plaza España in Sevilla was an unforgettable experience, highlighting the architectural magnificence and cultural richness of this iconic Spanish landmark. Designed by Aníbal González for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929, the plaza is a stunning example of Renaissance Revival architecture, with a unique blend of Moorish elements that pay homage to Spain's rich history. As I walked along the semi-circular brick building, I was captivated by the intricate ceramic tiles, known as azulejos, depicting the history and culture of each Spanish province. The craftsmanship and attention to detail in these artworks were astounding, offering a colorful mosaic of Spain's diverse regions. The bridges crossing the small canal, which reflects the beautiful façade, added to the romantic atmosphere of the plaza. The expansive central square, with its large fountain, was a vibrant gathering place for locals and tourists alike, echoing with the sounds of flamenco music and the sight of traditional dance performances. The grandeur of the Plaza España, set against the backdrop of Seville's clear blue skies, provided a picturesque setting that was both awe-inspiring and inviting.Exploring the Plaza España was not only a visual feast but also a deep dive into the cultural heart of Seville. It stood as a testament to the city's historical significance and its ongoing celebration of Andalusian culture and traditions. This visit left me with a profound appreciation for Spain's architectural beauty and its rich tapestry of history and art. visit it!

Vasco da Gama Bridge 🆚 Sports Park (Vasco da Gama Bridge) One of the longest bridges in Europe, 17.2 kilometers long. The bridge is located in the parish of Moscavide, about 10 kilometers northeast of Lisbon, part of the city of Loures, close to the Tagus River. On both sides of the bridge is a quiet modern community with a slow-paced atmosphere. It is also popular among locals because of its proximity to Lisbon Airport and the modern National Park (Parque das Nações); especially the sports park under the bridge, which is close to the water and has a large green space. In the evening, sports enthusiasts run on the overhead walkway from time to time, and there are sports figures everywhere on the tennis courts, padle courts and football fields.

Even if you’re not looking for food, walking through is a fun way to overview Madrid’s general culinary scene. The whole market is huge, and you’ll have to walk through a couple loops if you want to get a good idea of all the options (which I recommend doing anyways).
