Konigssee

4.7/5
316 reviews
Konigsseeis located in an Alpine valley on the German-Austrian border, south of Berchtesgaden, and is a long, narrow lake carved by glaciers. The lake stretches approx. 7.7 km from north to south, with steep rock walls on both sides and mountains plunging directly into the water. On the west bank, the towering east face of the Watzmann mountain rises abruptly. The lake water is emerald green and clear, with a maximum depth of approx. 190 m. Taking a boat tour is the classic way to experience the lake. The boat makes a short stop in front of the Echo Wall in the middle of the lake. The captain plays a trumpet, and the sound bounces off the cliffs, creating multiple echoes. The route has several stops, and most people get off at the St. Bartholomew peninsula—the Pilgrimage Church of St. Bartholomew, with its red onion-shaped domes, is set against steep cliffs and reflected in the lake, making it an iconic sight here. If you get off at the final stop, Salet, you can reach the Obersee hidden in the mountain hollow after a short walk. Walking further, you can see the Röthbach Waterfall cascading down from a great height. You can also take the cable car up the Jennerbahn on the east bank to overlook this "green fjord" nestled among the mountains.Schonau am Konigssee · 8.6 km from Berchtesgaden

Mirabell Palace & Garden

4.6/5
289 reviews
Mirabell Palace & Garden is located on the north bank of the Salzach River in Salzburg. Built in 1606 by Archbishop Dietrich for his lover Salome and their children, the palace was later renamed "Mirabell" by his successor. Today, it serves as the office of Salzburg's municipal authorities. The iconic scene from the movie The Sound of Music, where Maria and the children sing "Do-Re-Mi," was filmed by the garden's steps and fountain. The palace suffered a fire in 1818, with the marble staircase leading to the garden and the marble hall being among the surviving parts. The staircase is adorned with cherubs sculpted by Baroque artist Donner, each holding clouds in playful and endearing poses. The marble hall once echoed with the piano melodies of the young Mozart and is now a popular wedding venue, also frequently used for concerts and other events. The garden features a typical Baroque layout: statues of Greek and Roman mythological figures flank the entrance, while the central Pegasus fountain is surrounded by sculptures symbolizing the four elements. The green hedge theater at the rear, enclosed by neatly trimmed hedges, dates back to the early 18th century. The dwarf garden boasts a group of whimsically exaggerated stone gnomes, said to be modeled after real court figures. Unicorn sculptures scattered throughout add a fairy-tale charm to the solemn Baroque scenery. Climb the steps to the rose hill for a view of Salzburg Fortress on the opposite riverbank. The garden is adorned mainly with flower beds, hedges, and roses, making it especially delightful to visit during warmer seasons.Salzburg · 19.7 km from Berchtesgaden

Magic Forest

Magic Forest is named for the unique, wild view created by the interplay of boulder piles formed by a landslide thousands of years ago and rushing streams. Ancient rocks cascaded into the valley floor, creating stone formations. Since then, trees have grown among the scattered rocks, their roots wrapping around moss-covered boulders, while clear streams flow between them, forming a natural landscape that feels like a pristine, secret realm. The forest area features well-maintained trails, with geological interpretation signs along the way that tell the story of the ancient geological changes caused by the landslide. Walking through it, the tall, dense forest, intertwined roots, and scattered boulders complement each other, adding a strong sense of narrative and exploration to the hike. The edge of the forest connects to an open lake, where the mirror-like water reflects the surrounding peaks. The scenery here changes with the seasons—green in spring, red in autumn, and snow-covered rocks in winter—showcasing the enduring beauty of the natural ecosystem in the Alpine valley.Ramsau · 10.9 km from Berchtesgaden

Salzburg Castle is located on the Monk Hill in the old town of Salzburg and is the landmark building of the city. This white castle fortress has a very long history. It was built in 1077 and was gradually expanded by successive archbishops. There are museums and cafes in the castle, and it is also a good place to overlook the scenery of the whole city. When you enter the Salzburg Fortress, the first thing that catches your eye is the inner courtyard of the castle. The surrounding walls of the inner courtyard form a natural viewing platform. Before entering the castle, you may stop here for a while and overlook the scenery of the small town below the mountain. Audio guides (including Chinese) can be rented at the ticket office at the entrance. Because most of the exhibitions in the fortress are marked in German, it is recommended to rent one for sightseeing. The inner courtyard of the castle leads to the golden hall of the bishop. It is made of 4 huge marble columns and decorated very ornately. It used to be the place where the archbishop held major religious ceremonies. Going up the stairs, we came to the monarch's bedroom at that time. These resplendent bedrooms are as restored as possible to the furnishings of the year. The locks of all the cabinets are made of gold-plated, shining like the stars in the night sky. In addition, the fortress grain storehouse located underground can store food for a thousand soldiers for one year. If you are interested in the military, you can also visit the military museum in the castle, where various weapons and armors from the medieval period are displayed. The Torture Instrument Museum displays various torture instruments used to interrogate prisoners and prisoners. In addition, there are various small museums showing medieval life forms such as the Witch Doctor Exhibition Hall for viewing. The Muppets Museum The Muppets Museum is one of the highlights of the Salzburg Fortress. This museum is located in the basement and displays the marionettes used in the puppet theater, including the one that appeared in The Magic Flute. Papageno figures and figures from Amadeus. Here, you can not only see many lifelike puppets, but also have the opportunity to operate the actual puppets. There will be puppet theater performances at a fixed time every week, and tickets must be purchased separately. The specific time and ticket price can be checked at the puppet museum. After the Castle Museum, you can visit the Castle Museum, which introduces the history of the castle, weapons, handicrafts, judicial development and some history related to Salzburg. In the audio-visual room, you can sit quietly and enjoy the sound and light show about the past and present of Salzburg. There is an open-air cafe in the castle fortress, where you can enjoy the surrounding scenery while enjoying the aroma of coffee.Salzburg · 18.7 km from Berchtesgaden

The Eagle's Nest is a villa built for Hitler during the Nazi Germany period. It was built on the top of Obersalzberg in 1939. Hitler used it to entertain important guests, but he came here no more than 10 times, and most of his stay did not exceed 30 minutes. At the end of World War II, the Eagle's Nest was preserved despite being a bombing target. Today the villa has been converted into a restaurant, which overlooks Berchtesgaden and, in good weather, Königssee. However, it is not very easy to reach the Eagle's Nest. You need to take a special bus up the mountain, and there are many tourists queuing to buy tickets. If you have enough time and energy, you can also hike for 2-3 hours like the locals.Berchtesgaden · 3.8 km from downtown

The name "Salzburg" means "Salt Castle" in German and is named after the nearby salt mines and castles, which have been mined around Salzburg for nearly 4,000 years. To visit the salt mine, you must first change into a special miner's clothing, take a small train into the pit, slide down the slide to the bottom of the pit, and a special person will introduce how to send the rock salt out of the pit, and experience the natural treasures endowed by nature and the actual work at that time. situation. What is more exciting and attractive to tourists must be to arrange two high wooden slides to enter the ground. The underground tunnel leads directly to Germany, and you can also see the German-Austrian junction card in the center of the earth.Hallein · 7.9 km from Berchtesgaden

D23 Schönau-King's Lake-Ramsau-Back Lake-Stay in Lofersalach Valley King's Lake is located 5 kilometers south of Berchtesgaden, a small town on the border between Germany and Austria. It is known as the most beautiful lake in Germany. It is named after the shape of the surrounding peaks, such as the peaks symbolizing the king and queen, their children and the witch peak lying down. It is the deepest lake in Germany, with a maximum depth of 200 meters. Surrounded by mountains, the lake water is clear, and there is no pollution in the lake when electric boats travel. Wandering by boat, on the cliffs of the "Echo Wall", is a famous program for cruise ships: the captain blows the trumpet facing the cliff, and the echo can be clearly heard, and then takes the hat to collect tips. St. Bartholomew's Chapel is a landmark on the west bank of the Hirschau Peninsula of King's Lake. It has a unique shape and is known as a representative of the Baroque style. Go to the pier at the south end of the lake and then go forward to the upper lake. The lake is not big, but the color is comparable to the Five Flower Sea in Jiuzhaigou! The southern end of the upper lake is a pasture, and there are many swimmers who are not afraid of the cold by the lake! The dreamy colors can only be explained by pictures!

Mirabell Palace and Garden is one of the most beautiful attractions in Salzburg. The palace is elegant and full of charm, with lovely architecture and a rich history that reflects the city’s cultural heritage. I enjoyed walking through the gardens, especially the colorful flower beds, neatly trimmed hedges, and graceful fountains. The famous marble statues and the view toward the fortress made the visit even more memorable. The palace itself was also impressive, with its refined rooms and peaceful atmosphere. Overall, Mirabell Palace and Garden offers a wonderful mix of beauty, history, and relaxation. It is a must-visit for anyone exploring Salzburg, and I would gladly visit again.

The Hallein Salt Mine, located on the German-Austrian border, has a mining history of more than 400 years. You can change into miner's clothes, take a miner's wooden bench train down the mine, cross the German-Austrian border underground, take a boat trip to the brine lake, go down the long wooden slide, and watch mining introductions and movies. It is a perfect and rich European salt mining history. It is very beneficial to experience it.

The town of Berchtesgaden is an important supply station for starting a trip to the nature park. Berchtesgaden National Park is a famous tourist destination in Germany. Lake King is famous for its clear water. It is considered the cleanest and most beautiful lake in Germany. It is known as the Jiuzhaigou of Germany, but it is not as big as Jiuzhaigou! You can't row a boat by yourself, so taking a boat is the choice of most people. Lake King is sandwiched between steep peaks, and the cruise ship passes through it, giving it the feeling of a Nordic fjord. When the cruise ship comes near the rock wall, the captain will blow the trumpet. For foreign tourists who don't drive, transportation here is not very convenient.
