Things to do in Apeldoorn

No. 13 of Family-friendly Attractions in Netherlands

Apenheul

Apenheul was established in 1971 and is one of the first zoos in the world to allow monkeys to roam freely among visitors in a woodland setting. The entire park is set within a forest with natural vegetation, featuring dense trees and paths winding through the woods. Visitors can walk along soft trails, listening to the crisp chirping of birds and the rustling of leaves, immersing themselves in the activity of the monkey troops. Apenheul houses a variety of primates, ranging from small bamboo monkeys and lemurs to large gibbons, chimpanzees, and orangutans. Most species of monkeys roam freely in the park. While they have their own habitats, they often appear alongside visitor paths or among the branches. This design significantly bridges the gap between humans and animals, bringing both the joy of exploration and a deep sense of closeness to nature. The facilities are also well-developed: the park features multiple dining spots and rest areas for visitors to take a break or have a meal while exploring, and there are also shops selling souvenirs.

Paleis Het Loo

The Lou Palace is a palace building in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands. It was built in 1685-1692 and is a Dutch Baroque building. The palace was the hunting villa of the Dutch governor William III at that time, and once became the domain of the Orange family. Now the palace is open to the public as a museum, which houses the carriages, sleighs, cars and other means of transport used by the Dutch royal family. The interior of the palace is gorgeous and exquisite, and the garden is even more beautiful. The former stables have become a small exhibition hall, introducing the development of the Dutch royal family. There are also several small exhibition halls next to it, displaying various royal antiques.
