小小小苔藓After my second visit, I realized that saunas are a daily part of every Finnish life ♨️
We went to the uber-local Lonna Island. Joining the locals in the sauna and diving into the sea, I pretended to be Finnish for a day hhhhh🇫🇮
⛴️Transportation
✔️Take the ferry from Lyypekinlaituri Pier in Helsinki Market Square. The ride is only 10 minutes and uses the HSL card 🉑.
✔️Enjoy the ocean and Helsinki skyline along the way 🏙️. The sunset on the return trip is absolutely stunning 🌅
✔️The island itself is easily explored in just over ten minutes. Enjoy the Baltic Sea, pristine nature, and small cabins. No tourists, no tour groups, and a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere 🌳
·
♨️No Finnish experience without a sauna
✔️Lonna Island boasts Finland's oldest traditional smoke sauna, Savusauna. It features two wooden loft saunas, one on the first floor for showering and the other for steaming. There's a glass window in the middle with a sea view, and a terrace facing the sea. 🌊 The Finns really know how to enjoy themselves! 🤩
✔️The wood-heated stones are a classic touch. The instant water is poured over them, steam fills the air and the temperature rises. 🔥 It feels like your pores open up instantly, making you incredibly relaxed.
✔️ Locals do it this way: Jump into the sea right after the sauna, then return to the sauna and jump back in. The thrill of the two worlds is simply intoxicating! ‼ ️
·
🫕Food
LONNA's Restaurant on the island serves local Nordic cuisine. The fish caught that day was fresh and delicious 🐟, and I even finished all the seasonal baby potatoes 🥔
There's also a bar nearby, perfect for a drink after a sauna 🍹

💡Tips
✔️The sauna is co-ed, so some locals might not wear their clothes, so be prepared and don't be surprised... 🙈
✔️Towels, cushions, water bottles, and a small locker are provided, which is very convenient (bring your own swimsuit 👙).
✔️Be careful when diving into the sea, as the rocks are slippery. Please swim safely.
✔️Check the ferry schedule in advance to avoid missing the last one (I recommend the return trip for the stunning sunset).
