We also loved the Hakka cuisine. It's only a two-hour drive from downtown Shantou, making it perfect for a weekend getaway. Hotel Recommendation: We stayed at the Lakeside Hotel in Pankeng. The reservoir is right outside, and there's a lawn in front for camping. The hotel's water is directly connected to a mountain spring, and there's a terrace on the fourth floor for tea. We booked a three-bedroom, one-living room suite for over 600 yuan per night. It sleeps six, and the average cost per person is just over 100 yuan per day. It's an excellent value. Regular king-size rooms are between 100 and 200 yuan. While the hotel is a bit old, it's conveniently located and has a beautiful setting. It's a great choice for business travelers looking to get up early for a run or relax. Located mid-mountain, it's close to all the fun things to do in Pankeng! Recommended! Scenic Spots Guide 1. Chengdelou This is a Hakka restaurant built in a traditional two-story wooden horse-racing building. The architectural design and interior landscape are very quaint. It's a must-visit for a food and drink experience. There are also evening performances. Although you'll have to wait in line, I think it's worth it. 2. Pankeng Reservoir The entire reservoir is approximately 2.5 kilometers long and features a lotus pond, a camphor forest, and the Three Mountain Kings Temple. You can camp and enjoy the stars at the top of the mountain. There are plenty of roadside snacks. Recommended are the brown sugar buns, meatball soup, fermented rice cakes, salty pancakes, and ginger tofu pudding. 3. Lin Fengmian Memorial Hall This was my favorite place on my trip to Meizhou. It's one of the most aesthetically pleasing memorial halls I've visited recently in Guangdong Province. Of course, the emotional impact of Lin Fengmian's works is undeniable. Authentic Mountaintop Bookstore This is where a group of international friends and Buddhist culture advocates rented an old townhouse on the top of a mountain and renovated it into a homestay, bookstore, and cafe that blends international and local styles. Right in front of the door are the village, forests, and streams, offering a blend of art and nature, perfect for all kinds of travel enthusiasts. Hakka Cuisine Recommendations 1. Duanyou BBQ As expected, every place has its own unique barbecue flavor. Local friends recommended this place for late-night takeout. The grilled butter and grilled chicken feet are a must-try. The hotel terrace is a perfect place for evening gatherings, with a cool breeze and friends laughing. What a blessing! 2. Ma'anshan Yewu Pickled Noodles How can you visit Meizhou and not try pickled noodles? We ate at this restaurant, right outside the lakeside Yewu. Sitting on the trail, we ordered pickled noodles or pickled rice noodles, paired with the local garlic sauce – a perfect match! 3. Bamboo Courtyard Freshly stir-fried firewood chicken! You can choose from chicken, duck, or goose. Located right near the hotel, they use a large outdoor stove to stir-fry the chicken over a wood fire.
