On the second morning, we visited (1) "The temple closest to the sky" - Potala Palace. The Potala Palace is now divided into two routes for visiting, and only one route can be visited per day. Only a small part of the palace is open, but it is enough to shock the soul and feel its splendor and solemnity, and feel the changes in Tibet over thousands of years. (2) In the afternoon, we visited the Jokhang Temple. When Songtsen Gampo first built the Jokhang Temple, it was a lake. It was filled up by countless goats carrying stones. Many of the goats died of exhaustion. In memory of the goats, the temple was called "Resa" (meaning "goat carrying soil"), and gradually became known as "Lhasa". The Jokhang Temple is also the only temple in the world that houses a life-size statue of the 12-year-old Shakyamuni Buddha. Therefore, countless pilgrims who come here come to pay homage to the Jokhang Temple, not the Potala Palace. There are only three life-size statues of the Buddha in the world, namely the 8-year-old, 12-year-old, and 25-year-old statues. The founder of Buddhism, Sakyamuni, opposed idolatry during his lifetime and did not build temples to worship statues. Before his death, Sakyamuni only agreed to have statues of himself at three different ages, and he personally drew the drawings for the statues. Of the three statues, the most exquisite and noble is the gilded bronze statue of Sakyamuni as a prince at the age of 12. This is the only one left, which was brought by Princess Wencheng when she came to Tibet. Jokhang Temple is also famous for its inclusiveness. Five Tibetan sects coexist in the temple. (A. Nyingma Sect: Monks wear red hats and are commonly known as the "Red Sect". B. Sakya Sect: The walls of Sakya Temple are painted with red, white and black stripes representing Manjushri, Avalokitesvara and Vajrapani, so it is also known as the "Flower Sect". C. Gelug Sect: Monks wear yellow hats and are known as the "Yellow Sect". D. Kadam Sect: The Kadam Sect gradually merged into the Gelug Sect in its later development and has no particularly distinctive representative color. E. Kagyu Sect: Monks usually wear white robes and are known as the "White Sect". The Gelug Sect is also the most developed sect at present. Both the Panchen Lama and the Dalai Lama belong to this sect.) (3) In the evening, we experienced Tibetan clothing culture and took photos at the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and Barkhor Street. (4) At 9 pm, a large-scale outdoor live-action drama "Princess Wencheng" was performed. Because sunset in Lhasa is after 8:00 PM, the performance had to be scheduled for 9:00 PM.
