Generally speaking, I don’t like Yunnan food very much. I just want to try the specialties. But I really like Xizhou Baba. It is the kind of staple food that I am willing to buy for breakfast.
This shop has four flavors in total, two sweet and two salty.
For the salty one, I chose the | Deluxe Xizhou Baba^. It was originally for the meat lover in the family, but everyone liked it after tasting it. The fusion of eggs and noodles feels great.
For the sweet | Traditional brown sugar Baba^ and | Rose bean paste^ are different in style. The latter is more like an ordinary pie, without any special features. I still like the traditional one, which tastes very fragrant when chewed.

When you go to Xizhou Ancient Town, you must come and taste the monk baba from Suxiangyuan. There are various flavors. The price ranges from a few yuan to dozens of yuan. It has been on CCTV News. It is a special shooting point. Come to Xizhou, eat baba, and taste the taste of time😄
I was shocked. I queued for 50 minutes to buy a baba. The taste of baba is actually OK, but it's really not worth queuing for so long! This Suxiangyuan is also the most popular baba in Xizhou. There are 4 kinds of baba in total, two sweet and two salty ones. The sweet ones are 10 yuan rose bean paste brown sugar filling and 15 yuan limited edition. I didn't expect that we could buy the limited edition with a daily sales of 40 pieces at 5 pm. The salty ones are 10 yuan scallion meat and 20 yuan deluxe 4-layer meat and egg. We bought a deluxe version and a limited edition. The deluxe version really didn't taste like four layers of meat, it was just a salty pancake with the taste of meat patties and stewed eggs. The limited edition tasted sweet and burnt, but the pancake felt very dry after two bites. Another bad experience is that there are many cars passing by the queue, which keeps interrupting the queue! I don’t understand, isn’t this area of the ancient city closed to traffic?
I was strolling around Xizhou and walked to Sifang Street Square. I saw that Xiangsuyuan and Shangxizhou Posu Baba were doing a great business. The line was long, starting from the Daliu area. I bought a savory deluxe baba for 20 yuan. I should have gotten a sweet one, as it tasted pretty average and didn't have a lot of filling. I felt a bit disappointed waiting in line, but the price was quite high.
Who understands?! Before going to Yunnan, I thought "poetry and distant places" meant a huge financial drain, but after 5 days, I was completely proven wrong by the value for money! Turns out, you don't need to spend a fortune to experience snow-capped mountains, lakes, and ancient cities. This trip completely reshaped my understanding of consumption 👇 A super detailed itinerary is ready, so you can go without hesitation and avoid any pitfalls! 🗺️ 5 Days 4 Nights Essential Itinerary (No rushing! Immersive experience) Day 1: Kunming - Slow Time in the Spring City ✈️ Upon arrival, head straight to your accommodation in the city center (choose near Cuihu Park or Nanping Street, super convenient as you're within walking distance of the subway station). In the afternoon, head to the Dianchi Lake Haigeng Dam! In winter, red-billed gulls fly in circles; prepare some gull food beforehand, and every snapshot will be a masterpiece of nature and humanity. In the evening, stroll through Kunming's old streets, avoiding the trendy shops and delving into the traditional alleyways. Enjoy a bowl of incredibly delicious chicken soup rice noodles with some grilled rice cakes—the local joy is so easy to experience! Day 2: Kunming → Dali: First Experience of Wind, Flowers, Snow, and Spring 🚄Take the early high-speed train to Dali in 2 hours—time-saving and comfortable. In the afternoon, explore Dali Old Town: Avoid the crowds on Foreigner Street! Browse handmade silver jewelry on Renmin Road, and take photos at Wuhua Tower for a panoramic view of the old town. The sunlight shining on the green tiles is incredibly soothing. In the evening, rent a bicycle and ride along the Erhai Lake Ecological Corridor (from Longkan Wharf to Panxi S-bend), enjoying the lake breeze and watching the sunset. The Cangshan Mountains are bathed in gold—truly breathtaking. Staying overnight in a guesthouse by Erhai Lake, with views of Cangshan Mountain and Erhai Lake right outside the window—perfect value! Day 3: Dali: Erhai Lake Loop + Xizhou Slow Tour Spend the whole day on the most beautiful stretch of Erhai Lake! Rent an electric scooter and ride along the ecological corridor, stopping to take photos whenever you pass by covered bridges and seaside cafes. In the morning, head to Xizhou Ancient Town: check out the famous corner tower, enjoy a coffee by the rice paddies, and experience Bai ethnic tie-dyeing (super satisfying!). For lunch, be sure to try the freshly baked Xizhou crispy rice cakes—a sweet and savory combination, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside—paired with a bowl of spicy and sour cold chicken rice noodles. In the afternoon, head to Shuanglang Ancient Town, find a seaside restaurant for afternoon tea, take photos reminiscent of the "Sky Mirror," and experience the slow-paced fishing village life. Day 4: Dali → Lijiang: A Collision of Snow Mountain and Ancient City 🚗A 2.5-hour drive to Lijiang. Stay in a guesthouse outside the ancient city (quiet, peaceful, and convenient for luggage). Dedicate the entire day to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain! Important: Book your cable car tickets in advance! Wearing a thick coat and sunglasses, I bought oxygen cylinders and chocolate at the foot of the mountain to replenish my energy. In the morning, I climbed to the 4680-meter summit of the Glacier Park. Standing on the pristine white snow, gazing at the snow-capped mountains, I was speechless with awe. In the afternoon, I explored Blue Moon Valley! The lake water was a crystal-clear Tiffany blue. Walking along the lakeside offered a much better view than taking a shuttle bus; every snapshot was wallpaper-worthy. In the evening, I strolled through Lijiang Old Town: avoiding the bustling bar street, I listened to folk music and drank at the Sakura House, or enjoyed a bowl of cured pork rib hot pot in an alley—the dipping sauce was the soul of the experience. Day 5: Lijiang·Shuhe (Final Destination) + Return Trip In the morning, I rushed to Shuhe Old Town! Much quieter than Dayan Ancient Town, take the route from Jiuding Longtan → Qinglong Bridge → Feihua Chushui to experience the charm of the Ancient Tea Horse Road. For lunch, enjoy Naxi-style mixed hot pot and chicken bean jelly – the sour, spicy, and refreshing flavor is perfect with rice. Be sure to buy a couple of boxes of freshly baked flower cakes as souvenirs. In the afternoon, head to the airport/high-speed rail station according to your return time, concluding your perfect trip! 🍜 Must-Try Food List (Local Secrets, Guaranteed to Meet Your Expectations) - Kunming: Chicken Soup Rice Noodles, Tofu Rice Noodles, Steamed Chicken in a Clay Pot (clear and flavorful broth) - Dali: Xizhou Crispy Rice Cake, Roasted Milk Fan (absolutely amazing with rose jam), Wild Mushroom Hot Pot, Clay Pot Rice Noodles - Lijiang: Cured Pork Rib Hot Pot, Naxi Roasted Meat, Water Hyacinth (stir-fried and incredibly tender), Chicken Bean Jelly 💡 A Guide to Revolutionizing Your Consumption Habits & Avoiding Pitfalls 1. Transportation: Prioritize high-speed rail for Kunming, Dali, and Lijiang – fast and economical; rent electric bikes/shared rides locally – much cheaper than hiring a car. 2. Accommodation: Book Erhai Lake view rooms during the off-season for unbeatable value! In Lijiang, choose guesthouses outside the old town – good soundproofing and cheaper. 3. Avoid Pitfalls: Reject low-price tours! They're all about forced shopping; be cautious about buying silver jewelry and medicinal herbs in the old town – if you're worried about being ripped off, just browse without buying. 4. Consumption: Don't chase after trendy shops; local favorites offer authentic and affordable food; many natural attractions are free, so you can enjoy the beautiful scenery without spending a fortune. The beauty of Yunnan truly lies in the details. You can enjoy blue skies, snow-capped mountains, lakes, and authentic cuisine without spending a fortune!
