2024 Zhangjiajie Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in September)
Zhangjiajie was originally called Yongshi. It is famous for its vast and beautiful Wulingyuan Scenic Area, a World Heritage Site. Wulingyuan includes the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Tianzi Mountain Nature Reserve, Suoxi Valley Nature Reserve and Yangjiajie Scenic Area. Full of primordial forests, along with strange and magnificent natural landscape, the wondrous landscapes here were one of the inspirations behind the scenery in the 2009 film "Avatar". Other than seeing and enjoying the enchanting natural landscape, Zhangjiajie's Grand Canyon and Glass Bridge are popular places to visit. If you are interested, you can walk across the 430-meter-long glass bridge suspended 260 meters above the valley floor. It's a challenge that will make your heart skip a beat.

Zhangjiajie is a magical place
Zhangjiajie is nothing short of magical. Tucked away in Hunan Province, this place feels like it belongs in a dream—or maybe a movie, which makes sense since it inspired the floating mountains in "Avatar." When you first see those towering sandstone pillars, it's hard to believe they're real. They rise up out of the misty forests like something out of a fairy tale, creating a landscape that's both mystical and breathtaking.
The Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is the heart of this wonderland. Walking through it, you can’t help but feel tiny compared to the immense pillars around you. There’s something almost surreal about standing on the glass bridges or peering over the edge of a cliffside walkway, knowing that the view you're seeing is one of the most stunning on the planet. And then there's Tianmen Mountain, with its "Heaven's Gate"—a natural rock arch that feels like a gateway to another world.
But it’s not just the scenery that makes Zhangjiajie special. The local culture, with its rich Tujia and Miao traditions, adds a layer of warmth and history to the experience. You’ll find yourself immersed in the stories, songs, and dances of the people who’ve called this incredible place home for centuries.
Zhangjiajie isn’t just a destination; it’s an experience that stays with you long after you’ve left. Whether you’re someone who loves adventure or just wants to soak in the beauty of nature, Zhangjiajie is a place that will leave you absolutely amazed.

Avatar Mountain
If you like seeing what nature can offer, you can try visiting the avatar mountain which is located in Zhangjiajie.
Very convenient as there are buses/cable cars that will take you to the place. It's a very big place where you can do both hiking and relaxing at the same time while taking buses
Food stalls are also found in almost every location so i swear you will never hungry. Prices may of course vary, so if you don't want to spend too much then you can also carry your own snacks.
1 day is not enough as the park is huge so at least 2 days should be spent or maybe 3 for this trip. Depends on how fast you walk haha But it's all worth it.

Because the scenery is so beautiful, the camera is too ordinary to convey its beauty
Because the scenery is so beautiful, the camera is too ordinary to convey its beauty.
Walked all day and remembered it all in my head.
Posting some pictures to prove I didn't stretch my legs. If they look long and scary, it's due to Apple's distortion.
【Ticket】$278, but you need to book in advance. The price is the same for ABC lines.
【Accommodation】You can stay near the cable car.
Due to the peak season and not booking in advance, only Line C was left.
【Line C】
Take the shuttle bus from Tianmen Mountain Cableway Company to the cableway station, then take the cableway up the mountain. After reaching the top, follow the tour map and walk the west line first, then the east line.
The must-see attractions are on the west line. Because it was all foggy the day we went, we couldn't see anything, so we only walked the west line. After reaching Tianmen Mountain Temple, we took the open-air sightseeing cable car down the mountain, which was thrilling and fun.
【Line A】You can take the cableway directly from the cableway company in the city.
Take the cableway to the top station, then take the elevator to Yunmeng Fairy Peak to start the west line (Tianmen Mountain Temple, Qiu'er Cave, all the way to the west line glass walkway → through the mountain escalator to Tianmen Cave, Tianmen Cave front square, fast cableway, eco-friendly car).
Although we didn't see anything due to the heavy fog, and Line C had some backtracking, we walked a lot, but seeing the Heavenly Ladder lights was still quite worth it. The way down the mountain.

We are a group of three on a self-driving tour and came without any preparation.

Tianmen Mountain has a total of three routes: A, B, and C.
What's the difference❓
First☝️, the ticket price is the same🎫: 278💰/person
☝️Mainly depends on the time of travel
1⃣️If you depart in the morning☀️, choose route A
The morning sunlight paired with the scenery of Tianmen Mountain⛰️
is like a painting🖼️
2⃣️If you depart in the afternoon🌛, choose route B
Descend by cable car with the sunset🌇
The peaks are as brilliant as if gilded with gold💎
3⃣️The least recommended❌ is route C
Bus up🚌, bus down
You miss the spectacular cable car🚡 ride from the top of the mountain to the city
‼️Little tip📝‼️
From Tianmen Cave Square to the top of the mountain⛰️
There are 999 steps🪜 and the slope is quite steep
For those with bad knees❌ or poor physical strength
There is an elevator🛗 that goes directly up
Ticket price🎫 32💰
🔚🔚🔚
To summarize⚠️⚠️⚠️
The descent method for routes A and C is the same
The ascent method for routes B and C is the same
.
Taking photos like this at Tianmen Mountain is so cool and fitting!
1⃣️Open the wide-angle rear camera on your phone📷, choose 0.5x zoom, reverse the phone and adjust according to the height of the person, place the person in the center of the frame to prevent distortion. If distortion persists, reduce the frame and adjust to 0.7x.
2⃣️Left hand touches the hip, as close to the waist as possible, forming a triangular composition to look slimmer
3⃣️Right hand placed in the middle parallel to the PP, arm straight to give the picture more extension
4⃣️The person taking the photo should squat slightly, tilt the phone inward at a 30-degree angle for an upward shot, the pose might look a bit strange, like proposing hahaha
If you come to Zhangjiajie and haven't visited Baofeng Lake, you're missing out big time
When traveling to Zhangjiajie, how can you not visit Baofeng Lake and see the 'green dye' that has fallen to the human world? It might have been abandoned! Zhangjiajie is not only famous for its mountains, but Baofeng Lake is also one of the water-centric scenic spots in Zhangjiajie.
A niche treasure travel destination, a national 5A-level scenic spot; a World Natural Heritage site; known as the 'Jade Pool of the Human World'; one of the filming locations for the Water Curtain Cave and Flower Fruit Mountain in 'Journey to the West: The True and False Monkey King'; called the 'World Lake Classic'!

1️⃣ Baofeng Lake
The lake surface is like a mirror, surrounded by lush mountains, with two small islands in the lake embedded like emeralds, making it incredibly beautiful. Boating on the lake, you can enjoy the stunning scenery of 'half lake green water, half lake reflection'.
2️⃣ Baofeng Waterfall
The waterfall cascades down three thousand feet, shrouded in mist, making you feel like you're in a fairyland. This is also one of the filming locations for the Water Curtain Cave in the TV series 'Journey to the West', making you feel like you've traveled back to your childhood.
3️⃣ Eagle Nest Village
A cliffside ancient village full of mystery and adventure. The narrow sky gap is a marvel of nature's craftsmanship.
⚠️Tips
1. When visiting in summer, please take sun protection measures, such as bringing sunscreen and a sun hat.
2. When boating on the lake, please pay attention to safety and follow the staff's instructions.
3. The shallowest part of Baofeng Lake is about 72 meters, and the deepest part is over 140 meters. Be sure to hold your phone securely when playing on the water.
4. There is an outdoor hiking trail. If you have good stamina and the weather is good, you can climb to the top of the mountain to take panoramic photos of Baofeng Lake.
5. It rains a lot locally, so be sure to check the weather forecast and bring protective gear before going out.
Exploring Zhangjiajie: A Journey to a Fairyland, Stunning the Soul!
As the morning light first shines and the sky is clear, Zhangjiajie greets me with its brightest demeanor. With a gentle turn of the camera, every frame is a natural masterpiece that needs no filter. But what is even more breathtaking is when, at noon, a veil-like mist quietly rises. They gracefully weave through the peaks, as if nature's most mysterious brush is sketching dreamlike fairyland scenes between heaven and earth. 🌫️✨
At that moment, I felt as if I had stepped into another dimension; the earthly fairyland was no longer an unattainable legend. Every mountain and every cloud in Zhangjiajie tells a story of a thousand years, making one slow down involuntarily to savor this gift from nature. 👣💭
If you want to avoid queuing at Tianmen Mountain during the summer vacation, I recommend staying here
Before coming, my friends told me that
during the summer vacation, you have to queue for at least three hours at Tianmen Mountain . Finally, I saw this homestay online, which said it was very close to Tianmen Mountain and had a strategy to avoid queuing.
I decisively chose it.
The owner did not disappoint us. Early in the morning, he sent us to the entrance of the Tianmen Mountain scenic area. We arrived at Tianmen Cave Square at 7:30 am and were already down the mountain by 11:45 am. During the hottest time, we were already lying in the homestay room enjoying the air conditioning .

Hunan·Zhangjiajie | This guide makes your trip a breeze!!
Many friends become more confused after reading the travel guides for Zhangjiajie😵, don't worry, just read this one and you'll be set😎! Just follow it and have fun!!!
Zhangjiajie's trip mainly consists of three parts: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Tianmen Mountain, and Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon🎡.
Most people arrive in Zhangjiajie at noon, leaving only half a day🕛, feeling it's too late to visit any place, you can first go to Tianmen Mountain🌄. But pay attention to the time range on the ticket🎫!!
1️⃣Itinerary🗺
🏯Tianmen Mountain
Only one day is needed, there are three options for the same route: A, B, and C:
A: Take the big cable car up➕fast cable car down, downhill mode.
B: Take the fast cable car up➕big cable car down, climbing mode.
C: Take the fast cable car round trip, climb and then go down the mountain mode.
❗️Personal recommendation for A: Going downhill is more relaxed, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery, and it's not too tiring😜. On the way down, you'll hear others saying 'I chose C, I'm so tired, how much longer to finish climbing', then you'll know how wise it was to choose A😏!!!
🏯Zhangjiajie National Forest Park
Day1: East Gate→Bailong Elevator→Yuanjiajie→Yangjiajie→Tianzi Mountain→Tianzi Mountain Cableway→East Gate
Day2: East Gate→Ten-mile Gallery→Golden Whip Stream→Huangshi Village→Oxygen Bar Square→South Gate
Hiking sections🏃🏻: Ten-mile Gallery 4.5 km, Golden Whip Stream 7.5 km, Huangshi Village uphill route 3.5 km.
❗️Personal suggestions:
1. There are eco-friendly cars available at each scenic spot, mountain roads can cause motion sickness, remember to prepare motion sickness medicine💊.
2. Choose good weather, otherwise, it might be all foggy🌫️.
3. There are many monkeys on the mountain, do not carry very fragrant food, and do not wear too bright clothes, to avoid being scratched🤕.
🏯Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon
Only one day is needed, there are two routes to choose from:
A route (Grand Canyon only): Visitor Center→One Line Sky→Rainbow Square→Touching Cave→Shenquan Lake Cruise🛳️→Exit
B route (Grand Canyon➕Glass Bridge): Visitor Center→Glass Bridge→Bridge East Experience Center→Glass Plank Road→Experience Projects→Rainbow Square→Touching Cave→Shenquan Lake Cruise🛳️→Exit
❗️Personal suggestions:
1. You can try the high-altitude zip line for the experience projects😎.
2. The self-paid cruise at Rainbow Square is not necessary, walk a little further and there is a free cruise to the exit of the scenic area🚢.
2️⃣Food🥙
1. Master Hu's Three Hot Pots, Old Tian's Three Hot Pots: Traditional food of Zhangjiajie, recommended with walnut meat➕pork intestine➕beef tripe🥘. Also, their lotus root slices and potato cake are delicious😋.
2. Pig Brain Cold Noodles: Recommended pig ear cold noodles🐷.
3. Berry Tea🍵: Refreshing and sweet taste, rich and lingering, slightly bitter aftertaste, not astringent at all. I really like the taste of berry tea😍!
4. Haozi Baba: Crispy on the outside and sticky on the inside, slightly numbing taste😃.
5. Xiangxi cured sausage, cured meat: Homemade by Tujia people, evenly fat and lean, the more you chew, the more fragrant it is🥩.
6. Sour Fried Fish: A dish for hosting guests in Xiangxi, crispy on the outside and tender inside🐟.
7. Black Chicken Gastrodia Soup: Made with black chicken and gastrodia, highly nutritious and tastes great👍!
3️⃣Accommodation🏠
It is recommended to choose accommodation near the places you plan to visit, no specific recommendations. You can find high-rated ones on Ctrip, and compare several options🤗.
☁️⛅☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️˘☁️⛅☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️
Life is not about rushing through it🚶♂️,
but about enjoying the scenery along the way🌅!
Your like👍, love💗,
and follow👀,
are the greatest encouragement for me🥰! I am as happy as a child😜, looking forward to an unexpected encounter with you😎!!
Nightlife at the 72 Wonder Tower
🌆 It is an enchanting blend of sophistication and excitement, drawing visitors into a world of vibrant energy. The ordinary yet unique building transforms into a beacon of light at night.
✌️Ambience: We visited the place on a Friday night, and it was super crowded, creating a pulsating atmosphere. The entrance and exit are different, ensuring you can explore every corner of the place.
🤤 F&B: You have various options here, with exquisite street foods, milk tea, and more, both inside and outside the 72 Wonder Tower area.
Opening hours: 10:00 - 22:00
Address: Yongding District, Zhangjiajie
Rating: 🌟🌟🌟💫

Changsha is really fun, I will come again next time!
Changsha is really fun, there are so many delicious foods, and the people are super nice👍
Before going: Changsha has a lot of delicious food!
After going: There are too many delicious foods, I don't want to leave... (Don't worry about eating, you basically won't step on landmines, it's just that as a northerner, my body is a bit unaccustomed)
Tea Yan Yue Se: Recommend Sheng Sheng Oolong, You Lan Latte, Matcha Grapefruit (the iced version tastes better) Whenever you see Tea Yan Yue Se in every place, you must queue up to buy it, it's really good (also, there is none in the north)
Stinky Tofu: You can try the black classic oh
You must go to Orange Island Head, it's very photogenic, it's just that there are a lot of people (you can go early in the morning)
The night view of Fenghuang Ancient City is still good, but it's too commercialized, it's basically all travel photography, but the cost-performance ratio is still okay, if you have been to Lijiang Ancient City before, then it's not highly recommended here, there's not much difference.
Zhangjiajie's Seventy-Two Wonders Building is also quite recommended You don't need to buy a night ticket, it's very nice to take photos and check in across the street!
The scenery of Tianmen Mountain is really beautiful, you must go and see it yourself, the natural wonder (recommended tourist route A line, not tiring at all, remember to make an appointment a bit earlier)
The National Forest Park is still worth a visit, to feel the magnificence of the three thousand strange peaks and rocks, after all, you have already come to Zhangjiajie, it's really big inside, saw wild monkeys🐒 very cute, recommend entering and exiting from the east gate.
By the way, for those planning to travel to Hunan, you really don't need to check the weather forecast in advance, it's really useless, even the locals don't look at it, everyone just go and have fun, it's very comfortable to stroll around on cloudy and rainy days, sunny days are actually too hot, everyone just prepare an umbrella, the rain comes fast and goes fast!

√The five-day four-night travel strategy for Zhangjiajie is here! Follow me to unlock the correct way to explore Zhangjiajie
What comes to mind when you think of Zhangjiajie? Is it China's first national forest park - Zhangjiajie Forest Park?
Is it the world's longest high-altitude cableway - Tianmen Mountain? Or the glass bridge featured in various variety shows?
Zhangjiajie, as a tourism calling card of Hunan, has always been a hot spot among tourist attractions. It is indeed the best time to visit Zhangjiajie
Let's step into Zhangjiajie together and start a relaxing journey!
Mountains do not seek me; I seek the mountains myself
Mountains do not seek me; I seek the mountains myself. One must climb the 999 steps of Tianmen Mountain in Zhangjiajie, also known as the 'Stairway to Heaven', located within the Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park. It is the only way to reach the Tianmen Cave. With five gentle and four steep sections, it embodies the number ninety-nine, symbolizing the ups and downs of life's journey, suggesting that one can only become accomplished after overcoming numerous hardships.
Zhangjiajie Off-the-Beaten-Path Itinerary | One-Day Tour to Huangshi Village and Jinbian Stream to See Monkeys
| One-Day Tour to Huangshi Village and Jinbian Stream to See Monkeys. Are you still only aware of going to crowded places like Tianzi Mountain and Bailong Elevator when visiting Zhangjiajie‼️ There is such an off-the-beaten-path one-day tour route where you can come to see monkeys in winter and stream trace to breathe in the oxygen in summer! The key is that you don't have to squeeze with other people
We first took a bus to Huangshi Village
As soon as we entered, we could see many wild monkeys along the way that were not afraid of people, just sitting there❌ But it is not recommended to get too close or to feed them, as it is easy to get scratched
We chose to hike up the mountain and take the cable car down👇 On rainy days, the top of the mountain is all foggy and you can't see much, so it is recommended to go up the mountain on a sunny day / Climbing the whole way takes about 3 hours to reach the top💰 The cable car down the mountain costs 65 per person and takes just over a dozen minutes to arrive
After coming down the mountain, we headed straight for Jinbian Stream
This place is really the most stunning spot along the way / The footpath along the stream is so comfortable to walk‼️ It's also great to stream trace here in summer / The mountain scenery on both sides is also very spectacular, lush and pleasing to the eye
There are very few tour groups that walk along Jinbian Stream, so it's also much quieter / The whole journey takes about 2 hours to walk
However, be sure to pay attention to safety‼️ There are relatively more wild animals here / And you need to bring enough supplies as there are not many supply points and restrooms along the way
The exit is directly at the south gate of the forest park👀 There are many food shops, and the minibus back to the landmark gate is also nearby
Ascending to Heaven: A Thrilling Adventure on Tianmen Mountain
Tianmen Mountain in Zhangjiajie is nothing short of breathtaking. From the moment we arrived, I was captivated by its dramatic scenery and the exhilarating experiences it offers.
The journey began with a ride on the world's longest cable car, which provided stunning panoramic views of the city and the surrounding mountains. As we ascended, the landscape transformed into a mesmerizing vista of dense forests, jagged peaks, and misty valleys.
At the top, the Tianmen Cave, or "Heaven's Gate," was the highlight.
The 999 steps leading up to this natural arch are a challenge, but reaching the top is incredibly rewarding. The view from the cave is awe-inspiring, making the climb well worth the effort.
The glass skywalks are another thrilling aspect of Tianmen Mountain. Walking on these transparent pathways, suspended thousands of feet above the ground, is both terrifying and exhilarating. The feeling of walking on air, with a sheer drop beneath, is an experience I'll never forget.
The mountain's scenic walkways offer numerous photo opportunities, each turn revealing a new, stunning perspective of the natural beauty. The tranquility and majesty of the surroundings make it a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts like myself.
Overall, Tianmen Mountain in Zhangjiajie is an unforgettable experience, blending natural beauty with heart-pounding adventure. It's a must-visit for anyone seeking to immerse themselves in some of China's most spectacular landscapes.

Zhangjiajie Tianmen Mountain Scenic Area
Visiting Zhangjiajie, one must choose according to their own health and preferences. Because the scenery in Zhangjiajie is too unique and beautiful. When visiting Tianmen Mountain Scenic Area, the key points are: you must stay near the cableway so that you can rest as soon as possible after playing. You must book tickets in advance because there are too many tourists, and it is very difficult to buy tickets for Line A. You must bring enough dry food and water. You must go up the mountain in the afternoon, because the light and shadows are more beautiful in the evening.

Zhangjiajie Tianmen Mountain One-Day Tour Detailed Guide
Zhangjiajie Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park, super detailed play process, one ticket without regrets,
1. The ticket for Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park is 278, and there are three lines A, B, and C to choose from. It is recommended that everyone buy the A line cable car ticket as much as possible, because it will take the longest alpine passenger cableway in Asia from the downtown area to the highest peak of Tianmen Mountain, Yunmeng Summit, with a total length of 7455 meters, and it takes 28 minutes to reach the top. Along the way, you can overlook the surrounding mountains and rivers, and also see the wonder of Tianmen Mountain Road with 99 bends.
2. After getting off the cableway, it is recommended that everyone first visit the west line on the mountain top, which will directly lead to the east line. The first attraction of the west line is the glass walkway, which requires a shoe cover service fee of five yuan per person. Next is the Ghost Valley Plank Road, surrounded by clouds and mist a kilometer off the ground. When you finish walking the Ghost Valley Plank Road and go forward a little, you can see the Ghost Valley Cave. It is said that Guiguzi cultivated and became immortal here, about a hundred meters away from the mountain top. There is also a Tianmen Temple on the top of Tianmen Mountain, which is one of the five major temples in the world that enshrine the Buddha's relics.
3. After finishing the west line, you will come to the east line. Both the east and west lines offer a panoramic view of Zhangjiajie City. Near the end of the east line, you will see a sky-high viewing platform, where you can overlook Tianmen Cave. After that, you can take the mountain-crossing escalator, which has twelve sections and will take you directly to Tianmen Cave. The escalator is 897 meters long with a vertical drop of 340 meters, and it has set six Guinness World Records.
4. It takes 10 minutes to walk to Tianmen Cave from the escalator. Here you can experience the 'Stairway to Heaven', which is 999 steps, and take the opportunity to take photos and pretend you have climbed up from the bottom victoriously. Directly descend the 999 steps to Tianmen Cave Square, which is the best spot to view Tianmen Cave. If you're lucky, you might also witness various Tianmen wonders.
5. There is a fast cableway down the mountain at Tianmen Cave Square. Pay attention to the closing time of the cableway. This cableway is currently the steepest in the world in terms of climbing angle. After taking the cableway down, there will be an eco-friendly bus that takes you directly to the A line entrance in the downtown area.
Finding the Avatar Mountain
Expectation vs Reality!
Arrive at Zhangjiajie, feeling like you're about to step into the Avatar movie, ready to capture that perfect "floating" mountain shot.
Though in reality, it was…Get up at the crack of dawn…Battle through tourist crowds at Bai Long Elevator 百龙天梯…Finally reaching the viewpoint, only to find that the "floating" mountains are hidden behind a thick blanket of fog, leaving you In despair
So after having McDonald at the top, we decided to challenge ourselves by taking a hike down to the 10 Miles Gallery instead of the cable car. And boy, it was a tough 2-3 hours hike but the result was rewarding as we finally caught the view of the legendary mountains!

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park
#chinatrip A stunning, breathtaking and awe-inspiring place. The inspiration for Pandora in the Avatar movie. An absolute must-see. The best time to see will be in early winter as the place will appear mythical and magical in the mist. The park comprised of dense forests, deep ravines, deep canyons, unusual peaks, caves, and pillar-like rock formations blanketed throughout the park. These pillar rock formations are what the park is renowned for around the world.
The stone peaks stand tall, offering a world of mysterious sights

Foggy View Array Mountain Homestay
For a getaway around Changsha, escape the city's hustle and bustle and head to the natural oxygen bar. Stay in a high-value homestay in Zhangjiajie, the Array Mountain. The housekeeper picked us up outside the high-speed rail station, and we didn't go to the scenic area for three days, all in this mountain of the Array Mountain, where there is only this homestay. There are many surrounding play projects, the housekeeper took us to climb the back mountain to see the fog and bamboo forest, the scenery is really beautiful. We stayed in three rooms in three days, all very good looking! The floor-to-ceiling glass allows you to see the quiet mountains outside, and there is also a sweat-steaming room in the room, which I really like. The housekeeper also picked us up and dropped us off at the high-speed rail, made us breakfast, picked loquats, took us to barbecue, and helped us take pictures. I hope the above answer is helpful to you.
Exploring the wonders of the Earth - Zhangjiajie
This time, I came with full expectations to the 'Avatar Planet' on Earth - Zhangjiajie.
As soon as I stepped into this mysterious land, I was deeply attracted by the towering mountains, winding paths, and lush forests. Every scene in Zhangjiajie is like a work of art carefully carved by nature, making people marvel at the greatness of the creator.
I also bravely challenged the glass bridge, the feeling of walking in the clouds, both exciting and unforgettable.
This trip to Zhangjiajie not only allowed me to appreciate the magnificence of nature, but also made me understand the meaning of travel - exploring the unknown, feeling the beauty of life.
If you are also curious about Zhangjiajie, don't hesitate, join me on this wonderful journey! You will find that the world is more beautiful than you think!
