Shanxi Dayang Ancient Town Worth visiting ancient buildings
The ancient town retains a large-scale and well-preserved group of Ming and Qing ancient buildings, known as the \"living fossil of Chinese ancient towns\". During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, there were many officials in the ancient town, and the local folk songs \"There are officials who don't brag about Dayang\" and \"Dayang produced three dou and three sheng sesame officials\" truly reflect the prosperous literary movement at that time in Dayang, with a succession of officials. At the same time, Dayang is known for its developed handmade needle industry, supplying every family in China and exporting to Central Asia, and is known as the \"needle capital of the nine provinces\".
Set off at five o'clock in the morning in the heavy rain to see the Chengtang Palace of the Yuan Dynasty, a typical \"three bright and seven dark\" structure, which should have inherited the \"reducing pillars and moving pillars\" architectural style of the Mongol Yuan Dynasty. According to my analysis, the Yuan Dynasty came from the northern nomadic people, and the trees for building beams in the Central Plains were difficult to grow and mature in the northern grasslands, so the buildings of the Yuan Dynasty generally advocated practicality, reduced the use of wood, and were simple in shape, full of free and easy and rough beauty. The naturally curved jingmu beam on the eaves is particularly eye-catching. This is the first time I have seen such an old and well-preserved jingmu hall beam in China. It should be the most famous one in China. I can't get enough of it, I can't get enough of it, I can't get enough of it!
Transportation 313 Road half an hour a bus can go to Dayang Ancient Town, an hour on the road, passing through many villages, is a leisurely rural scenery.
Sanjin's number one town | Dayang Ancient Town
Today, I'll give you a place in Jincheng where you can confidently check in.

It was formerly known as Yang'a and is also a famous town for Chinese history and culture, a base for international cultural exchange for Chinese overseas, a living fossil of ancient Chinese towns, and a national AAAA-level tourist scenic spot.
During the day, visiting the ancient town, you can visit the five major pavilions, all of which are historic architectural and cultural sites:

Erxian Temple Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jul)
The elegant small wooden structure of the Tian Gong in the Erxian Temple of Xiaonan Village
Unlike Datong in northern Shanxi, which served as the Western Capital during the Liao and Jin dynasties and was a political center with the religious status of the Buddhist holy site of Mount Wutai, featuring grand architectural scale and high rank, with large temples and tall towers embodying the bold style of northern ethnic minorities, the ancient buildings in southern Shanxi are rich in regional characteristics, small and exquisite, finely crafted, with almost every village having a temple. Due to its remote location and dry climate, many stunning cultural treasures have been preserved. Additionally, the rich and complex folk beliefs here have provided numerous unique materials for ancient buildings, including not only Buddhist temples and Taoist temples but also various ancestral halls and shrines. The principle of 'believing in the divine' means that regardless of the deity, as long as it is believed to respond to prayers, the people will build temples to worship and pray for blessings. The Erxian Temple in Xiaonan Village, Zezhou County, Jincheng, is one such example. The Jincheng Museum has a table showing the local practice of Erxian worship, indicating its widespread presence. The Erxian Temple in Xiaonan Village was first built during the Song Dynasty, and the inscription of its construction still exists. Its value lies in the 16 Song Dynasty painted sculptures, of which only 5 have preserved their original heads. The most astonishing masterpiece in the temple is the small wooden structure of the Tian Gong pavilion, which is an original construction from the Northern Song Dynasty. It is connected by a high platform and an arched corridor bridge, with a hall at the top and wooden shrines of the two immortals and their attendants below. The mortise and tenon structure of the small wooden pieces is like building blocks, creating a floating Tian Gong in a very limited space, which is not at all rustic like a mountain village product, but rather elegant.
Er Xian Temple | Sealed for 900 years! The Northern Song Dynasty wooden celestial palace attic
Sealed for 900 years! The Northern Song Dynasty wooden celestial palace attic.⛰️ Shanxi, undisputedly the province with the most national treasures; and Jin southeast is the pearl of ancient architecture in Shanxi. Rare Song Dynasty wooden structures are scattered here like pearls, dazzling to the eye. If you go to Datong Huayan Temple and don't see the Liao Dynasty's small wooden celestial palace attic in the Baoji Teaching Collection, it's okay--the Northern Song Dynasty's celestial palace attic at Er Xian Temple is equally splendid.
📍Xiao Nan Village Er Xian Temple, the fourth batch of national treasures, is located north of Dong Nan Village, Jin Village Town, Zezhou County, Jincheng City, Shanxi Province. It was established in the fourth year of Song Shaosheng (1097) and is dedicated to the Two Immortal Ladies. The main hall of Er Xian Temple is a Song Dynasty relic, with a width of three bays and a depth of four beams, featuring a single-eave Xieshan roof. The hall's dougong brackets are majestic, with a five-bay single-tier single-lower ang structure, adorned with auspicious clouds and auspicious animal paintings, extremely exquisite.
🔴The biggest highlight of Er Xian Temple is the Northern Song Dynasty's small wooden celestial palace attic inside the hall--'Tian Yu Bi Cang', also known as 'Celestial Palace Attic Arch Bridge Bi Cang'. The main niche has three bays with a Xieshan style, with two entrances front and back, and double-eave Xieshan attics on the east and west connected to the main niche. The railings, dougong, outer eaves decorations, and patterns used in the decorations all have the style of the Song Dynasty, making it a typical model of Song Dynasty wooden architecture. In the center of the niche, there are two immortal statues sitting, 2.5 meters high, with 16 attendant statues on both sides, most of which are original works from the Song Dynasty. The rear eave wall still has 9 square meters of scroll landscape and flower bird murals.
🔴When 74-year-old cultural heritage guardian and village secretary--Grandpa Yang opened the door lock for us, everyone was impressed by this divine work of the Northern Song Dynasty. Grandpa enthusiastically recounted the history of the temple, knowing everything here like the back of his hand. I think this is probably the first and last time I will see Grandpa Yang. It is these cultural heritage guardians who have dedicated most of their lives that give the ancient buildings of Shanxi a complete appearance and a human touch. Therefore, during the visit, please also understand and treat these lovely and respectable guardians kindly, because they, like us, only have a passion for ancient buildings

Journey to Shanxi - Erxian Temple in Jincheng
It is said that the two immortals were people from the Jin Dynasty, they were sisters from the same mother. Their mother passed away early, and their stepmother was very harsh to the two sisters. They never disobeyed their stepmother and did their best to complete the tasks assigned by their stepmother. Their filial piety touched the gods, and the two sisters were transformed into immortals. After becoming immortals, they responded to the demands of the local people. In gratitude, the people built several temples to worship the two sisters, commonly known as the two immortals.
During the Northern Song Dynasty, there was a magical folk tale. It is said that during the war between the Song army and the Western Xia, the Song army was at the point of running out of food and supplies. At this time, two young women dressed in red and wearing embroidered shoes appeared and saved the Song army. It was later learned that the two women were transformed by the two immortals. This is the famous story of the two immortals rewarding the army, which has been recorded in history.
After the Tang Dynasty, the incense of the Erxian Temple has been long-lasting. The Erxian Temple is almost everywhere in the Shangdang area. Until the end of the Qing Dynasty, most of the Erxian Temples in the Shangdang area were destroyed. There are still 6 Erxian Temples in Shanxi today, among which the Erxian Temple in Xiaonan Village is the only temple that worships the statues of the two immortals. It is also the earliest and unique Song Dynasty statue of the two immortals in the Shangdang area.
The Erxian Temple has a total of 6 statues, two of the real statues of the two immortals, and four maid statues. They are works of the same period as the main hall of the temple. The statues are dignified, beautiful, and natural in expression. They are full of affinity between their eyebrows and can be said to be the best works of the Song Dynasty clay sculpture. On the wall behind the clay sculpture, there are also murals of swallows, magpies, and lotus flowers.
There is also a heavenly palace in the hall, which is a rare original structure of the small woodwork of the Northern Song Dynasty. The heavenly palace is suspended in the air of the Erxian Temple. It is composed of two que-shaped high platforms, an arch bridge, and the palace on the bridge. The bottom is the wooden shrine of the two immortals and their attendants, and the top is the top of the shrine. The builder used an arch bridge suspended in the air, seemingly supporting the shrine in mid-air, truly creating the effect of the heavenly palace. It is a milestone in architectural history and the most unique example of using bucket arches in ancient Chinese architecture.
There are also two cypress trees on the east and west sides of the music pavilion of the Erxian Temple. It is said that they were planted when the temple was built and have a history of a thousand years. There are also two stone steles in the temple, which were also left over from the Song Dynasty. There are very few small wooden buildings left in the southern part of Jin. In a remote village temple, someone actually built a heavenly palace. As history continues to pass, the later generations who come to visit are amazed. Unfortunately, due to the lack of protection, many buildings inside have been damaged. It's a pity. If you are interested, you might as well go and have a look. I believe there will be gains. Note that there is no admission fee, no parking fee, but the transportation is not very convenient, it is recommended to drive by yourself.

Pathfinder Episode 13: Fucheng Yuhuang Temple
National key cultural relics protection, Fucheng Yuhuang Temple.
The security guard said:
Don't mention the cultural relics under 600 years old here, it's not interesting...
That proud face.
It's hard to see clearly, let alone take pictures. If it's not surrounded by iron railings, it's locked doors. Even if you go in, it's like tunnel warfare.
Only a few photos were taken with the mobile phone, and these photos were also hard to come by .
The last photo can screenshot the QR code for voice explanation, and there are explanations and pictures of this hall after scanning with the mobile phone.
Tour of Shanxi—Yuhuang Temple in Jincheng
The Yuhuang Temple was established in the ninth year of Xining in the Northern Song Dynasty (1076), and it is a Taoist temple in ancient Zezhou with a large scale and wide influence. The temple is divided into three sections, with the first gate, the second gate, the gods' pavilion, and the Yuhuang Hall built on a central axis. The temple has a rare Taoist twenty-eight constellations solitary product colored sculpture in the history of Chinese sculpture.
The existing Yuhuang Hall was built in the Song Dynasty, the Chengtang Hall was built in the Jin Dynasty, the east and west ear halls and the east and west corridors in the backyard were built in the Yuan Dynasty, and the rest are all buildings from the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
The temple of Yuhuang Temple retains more than 280 colored sculptures from the Jin, Yuan, and Ming Dynasties, 120 square meters of murals, 36 Jin, Yuan, Ming, and Qing records, and heavy repair steles (square). The roof of the Yuhuang Temple also retains some glazed art components from the Jin, Yuan, and Ming Dynasties.
The twenty-eight constellations statues are located in the west corridor of the temple, which are relics of the Yuan Dynasty, sculpted in the thirty-first year of Yuan Zhiyuan (1294), and there are 23 existing statues, which are inferred to be the works of the great sculptor Liu Lun of the Yuan Dynasty. The characteristics are Greek noses, slender waists, rich and profound facial expressions, representing the representative achievements of ancient Chinese sculpture art, and are typical examples of the combination of realism and romanticism in ancient Chinese sculpture art.
Tour guide:
1. Navigation: Yuhuang Temple, Zezhou County, free parking near the entrance.

3. Must-see: The most valuable thing in Yuhuang Temple is the twenty-eight constellations statues, followed by the colored sculptures of various dynasties, as well as the twenty-eight constellations glazed statues and the glazed lions on the ridge of the roof of Yuhuang Hall, and the glazed kirin on the back slope beasts (need a long-focus lens to take pictures, lions and kirins need to go out of the gate and go around to the back of Yuhuang Hall to see).
Jincheng Jade Emperor Temple in Shanxi | Twenty-eight Constellations Colored Sculptures
| Twenty-eight Constellations Colored Sculptures.🌟The twenty-eight constellations are twenty-eight star regions divided by ancient Chinese astronomers for observing the movement of the sun, moon, and five stars, composed of seven constellations each from the Azure Dragon of the East, the Vermilion Bird of the South, the White Tiger of the West, and the Black Tortoise of the North. The twenty-eight constellations are the names of constellations in astronomy. In the Tang Dynasty, the Five Elements scholar Yuan Tiangang combined the twenty-eight constellations with twenty-eight animals, and assigned one of the characters of the sun, moon, gold, wood, water, fire, and earth under each constellation name. The sun and the moon are yin and yang, and gold, wood, water, fire, and earth are the five elements, so the names of the twenty-eight constellations are formed by these three combinations.
🌟Treasures of Jincheng Jade Emperor Temple
1⃣Twenty-eight Constellations Colored Sculptures: Works of Yuan Dynasty art master Liu Lun, unique in the country, representing the highest achievement of ancient Chinese sculpture art, located in the Twenty-eight Constellations Hall on the west side of the backyard.
2⃣Glazed Components: The twenty-eight constellations glazed figures and the glazed lions on the ridge and the glazed kirin on the back slope of the Golden Age burnt in front and behind the ridge of the Jade Emperor Hall of the Song Dynasty are the only remaining items of similar glazed products in China; the peacock blue glazed tiles covering the first gate and the glazed god platforms concentrated in the halls of the middle courtyard are also very precious.
3⃣Wood Carvings: The various god statues in the Chengtang Hall of the Jin Dynasty and the three tower-style god niches are all fine wood carvings. The main building of the god niche is more than 5 meters high, with a double-eave Xieshan top, and the two ear buildings are double-eave Xuan Mountain tops. The overall design is exquisite, the shape is rigorous, the layers are rich, and the knife technique is delicate, which can be described as a small wooden art masterpiece.
4⃣Murals: Most of the murals in the temple have been damaged, and the remaining murals are all works of different periods, each with its own characteristics, which is precious. The best preserved is the front mural in the Twelve Yuan Chen Hall.
5⃣Colored Sculptures: The temple houses more than 260 colored sculptures from different periods such as the Song, Jin, and Yuan dynasties, all of which are Taoist gods, from the Jade Emperor, the Universal Star Monarch, to the Three Walls, Four Saints, Nine Yao, Twelve Chen; there are both the Wind and Rain Masters, the Silkworm Raising, Wen Zhen, Wu Dao; there are also Gao Qi, Horse God, Bull King, Six Plagues; it can be said that it gathers people, ghosts, gods, and immortals together, and it can be said to systematically display the Chinese Taoist gods system with artistic methods, with extraordinary viewing value and cultural relic value.

Qinglian Temple Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jul)
Qinglian Temple in Jincheng, Shanxi
Qinglian Temple, originally named Xieshi Temple, is located in Xieshi Mountain on the north side of Si Nan Village, 17 kilometers southeast of Jincheng City, Shanxi Province. The temple is named after the statue of Sakyamuni Buddha seated on a lotus pedestal inside. The ancient temple was built during the Tianbao era of the Northern Qi dynasty; the new temple was constructed in the second year of the Tang Dynasty's Dahe era (828 AD) with Tang Dynasty sculptures and Song Dynasty architecture! It is a treasure of ancient Chinese architecture! Unfortunately, there are no longer any monks to worship, and it has become an ancient architectural museum!
The Sui and Tang Dynasties' Buddhist capital, Qinglian Temple, is now officially open!
Qinglian Temple, originally named "Xiaoshi Temple," got its name for being located at the foot of Xiaoshi Mountain in the southeast of Zezhou County. It was founded by the Northern Qi monk Huaiyuan Chan Master (523-592). Qinglian Temple is divided into the ancient temple and the new temple, which are about a kilometer apart and belong to the Pure Land Sect and the Tiantai Sect, respectively. The Daochang New Temple was named "Fuyan Chan Courtyard" by imperial grant in the third year of the Song Dynasty's Taiping Xingguo era (978).
The construction of Qinglian Temple is closely related to the activities of the founder of the Pure Land Sect, the eminent monk Huaiyuan, who was active here. The ancient temple was initially built during the Northern Qi Dynasty's Tianbao era and was completed through the efforts of the Northern Qi, Northern Zhou, Sui, and Tang Dynasties, serving as a Maitreya Pure Land Sect monastery. The main buildings of the lower temple include the main hall and the south hall. The main hall houses a broad Buddha altar with six Tang Dynasty colored sculptures still in existence, which are among the seventy-plus sculptures from three locations of the Tang Dynasty found nationwide. The south hall has twelve colored sculptures, which continue the Tang style, focusing on realism and vividly conveying emotions.
The main buildings of the upper temple include the Heavenly King Hall, the Sutra Tower, the Shakyamuni Hall, the Mahavira Hall, the Arhat Hall (Guanyin Hall), and the Ksitigarbha Hall, among others. The Shakyamuni Hall was built in the fourth year of Song Zhezong's Yuanyou era (1089), with Song Dynasty inscriptions on the stone door frames and column heads, and the hall preserves Song Dynasty colored sculptures; the Guanyin Hall and Ksitigarbha Hall are remnants of the Northern Song Dynasty, with the latter two reconstructed during the Qing Dynasty. The colored sculptures are also Song Dynasty relics, redecorated during the Ming Dynasty and modern times.
During the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, I went to Qinglian Temple with volunteer friends for a study tour. Now, the Tang Dynasty colored sculptures in the lower temple and the Northern Song Dynasty colored sculptures in the upper temple can be photographed (except for the Ksitigarbha Hall and the Throwing Pen Platform, which continue to undergo maintenance), and other buildings are normally open!
Secluded in the mountains lies the ancient Qinglian Temple—in Jincheng, Shanxi
Qinglian Temple is located southeast of Jincheng city, surrounded by Jue Mountain and Dan River. The temple is divided into the Upper Temple and the Lower Temple.
The Lower Temple's key attractions include a pagoda and colored sculptures, while the Upper Temple is noted for its colored sculptures and ancient buildings.
Temples in Shanxi convey a solemn and rustic atmosphere. Besides the ancient buildings and colored sculptures being genuine artifacts, the most significant difference is that the Buddha statues are placed on a platform at the center of the main hall, offering a closer and more impactful experience.
