2024 Zagreb Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in September)
Although not as popular a tourist destination as the coastal destinations of Dubrovnik or Split, Zagreb, the political and cultural capital of Croatia, is still worth a visit. Zagreb is a museum aficionados dream; home to more museums per square foot than any other city in the world. The city also has a large selection of cafes and restaurants that offer a variety of European as well as international cuisine. In fact, one of the favorite pleasure of the Zagrebcani (the people of Zagreb) is sitting in one of the numerous cafes watching the world go by.

The area is quiet so you can rest without worries. There is a small shopping mall nearby as well as supermarkets. Upper town is only 20 minutes by walk or you can simply take a tram. There are a lot of museums in Zagreb and this is definitely one of the most interesting one for me! The chocolate museum! Everyone loves chocolate! The best thing about this museum is they give you a box of chocolate as your ticket. You eat different chocolate when you arrive different exhibition halls. Zagreb - the historic city
#summerbreak
Zagreb - a place with great history. I would highly recommend taking a walking tour of this city, currently a lot of the landmarks are under construction due to the huge earthquakes of 2020. Walking around the town is fascinating. See the huge titled roof of St. Mark’s Church, visit Lotrščak Tower, wander the small streets and take a ride on the shortest funicular.
If you happen to be at the tower around midday, you will catch the cannon fire - it’s loud - but a spectacle to see.

Velvet cafe
Luxury and decent prices. It’s collected in Velvet.
A little out of the way in terms of those who are spending their time in the old town but no more than 5 minutes walk away from the Gric Park and just 2 minutes walk away from the Gric Tunnel entrance.
Staff are friendly and speedy with service, the location is along a street of random shops and other food places but Velvet covers a large area for itself.
Drink - Aperol Spritz €6
Cake - Chocolate cake with cherries - €4

Park Zrinjevac - Zagreb
A fairly small but quiet and calm park located just beside the main lower town square of Ban Jelacic square. It’s relatively compact within the park but you can find benches lining the sides where locals enjoy sitting.
An early morning arrival ensures for ultimate peace in this area. When I arrived, there were workers cleaning up the grounds and fixing plants around the main park area.
In the centre, stands a pavilion where you might encounter people playing instruments or just watch people sitting/lying down to enjoy some peace and tranquility.

Museum of Broken Relationships
Every trip I have, I always seem to end up in a museum so I’ve decided to start making it to the unique versions of museums instead.
Museum of broken relationships is funny, cute and a rollercoaster of emotions. There are pieces of relationships that have broken down, ones where members have passed away and some that relate to family members. Each piece has a story and you should make sure to read each story as no two are the same.
Entrance fee is €7 and you can use a translated guide to read the stories unless English or Croatian are your main language.

Let Sunflower lead a garden tour
The Botanical Garden of the Faculty of Science at the University of Zagreb was founded in 1889. It spans over 5 hectares and features a diverse collection of plant species, including both native and exotic plants. The garden serves as an educational and research institution, providing valuable resources for botanical studies. Over the years, it has expanded and developed various thematic sections, making it a popular destination for visitors seeking to explore and appreciate the beauty of nature.
In the garden of science, I stand tall and bright,
A sunflower proud, basking in the golden light.
Amidst diverse flora, I reach for the sky,
A beacon of beauty, nature's painting nearby.
My petals, vibrant and yellow, dance with grace,
Witnessing knowledge bloom in this sacred space.
With roots in the earth and dreams that unfurl,
I'm the sunflower, embracing this botanical world.

Touring around Zagreb Town@Croatia
Able to spend some time walking around the capital, also the largest city of Croatia during my last visit to Europe. This city is famous for being the homeland of necktie and yeah, I did get myself one as souvenir😁. There are also cafes, bars and restaurants around for meals; considered a “pitstop” after a long day of strolling around admiring the architectures or perhaps shopping😊.

Sheraton Zagreb
During my recent visit to Zagreb, I had the pleasure of staying at the renowned Sheraton Zagreb, and I must say that my experience was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted with warm hospitality and a level of service that exceeded my expectations. However, what truly made my stay unforgettable was the incredible suite upgrade I received.
Upon check-in, I was delighted to learn that I had been upgraded to a luxurious suite. The suite was nothing short of spectacular, with its spacious layout and tasteful design. The attention to detail was evident throughout, from the elegant furnishings to the carefully curated artwork adorning the walls. It was a haven of comfort and sophistication, providing the perfect retreat after a day of exploring the city.
The bedroom was a sanctuary of relaxation, featuring a plush king-size bed that ensured a restful night's sleep. The separate living area was equally impressive, offering a cozy seating arrangement and a well-appointed workspace, ideal for catching up on work or unwinding with a good book. The suite also boasted a stylish bathroom, complete with premium amenities and a luxurious bathtub, perfect for indulging in a rejuvenating soak.
In addition to the lavish suite, the hotel's amenities were equally impressive. The fitness center was well-equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, allowing me to maintain my exercise routine.
One aspect that truly stood out was the hotel's dining options. The on-site restaurants showcased a diverse selection of cuisines, each prepared with precision and flair. From delectable international dishes to traditional Croatian delicacies, there was something to satisfy every palate. The attentive staff were more than happy to offer recommendations and ensure a memorable dining experience.
The hotel's prime location was another highlight. Situated in the heart of Zagreb, it provided convenient access to the city's attractions, cultural landmarks, and vibrant nightlife. Whether I wanted to explore the historic Upper Town, stroll through the picturesque parks, or immerse myself in the local culture, everything was within easy reach.
Lastly, I cannot praise the hotel staff enough for their exceptional service. From the friendly and efficient front desk team to the attentive housekeeping staff, everyone went above and beyond to ensure my stay was seamless and enjoyable. Their attention to detail and genuine hospitality made me feel truly valued as a guest.
In conclusion, my stay at Sheraton Zagreb was a truly remarkable experience, and it was largely due to the incredible suite upgrade I received. #marriott
A unique experience in the capital of Croatia
The Zagreb Festival of Lights (Festival svjetla) is hands down one of the most captivating events I have ever experienced. The city streets and landmarks transform into a magical wonderland of light installations and interactive displays that captivate the senses. The festival offers a diverse range of artistic styles and approaches that showcase the city's cultural heritage and contemporary art scene made by many international artists. From mesmerizing light shows to interactive installations, the festival offers an immersive experience that engages all the senses. The creative use of technology and art makes it a must-see event for anyone who appreciates the transformative power of art. Overall, the Zagreb Festival of Lights is an unforgettable experience that I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Croatia's capital city. It must be said that it's also a great exercise and that it's probably better to try to see in 2 days rather than 1. Also, try avoiding the weekend because it gets crowded. This year the show ran for 5 days (15-19/03).
Zagreb: kickstart of my two-week trip
Getting There - Ryan air: London—-Zagreb
Attractions - Stone Gate, Lotrščak Tower, Market Dolac
Hotels - Preradovićeva ul. 36
Food & Restaurants - Broom44
Highly recommend the airbnb I stayed in. It was near the city centre, small but convenient. You can easily walk to the city centre. There were also a lovely bakery and gelato shop nearby. I spent three days in Zagreb as I decided to go to Plitvička jezera on Day 2. (to b continued…)
Zagreb, 25-30. October
Getting There - we booked a Rental Car, we were picked up from the airport. recommended for anyone ever travelling to Croatia. other than that, there’s affordable public transportation commuting between the airport and the city, with day-tickets starting at 4€.
Attractions - the Time square in the heart of Zagreb is certainly a head-turner, as well as the old trams.
Hotels - a little east of the city Center, one can find multiple affordable and idyllic hotels to stay for the night.
Food & Restaurants - number 1 Recommendation: Nokturno. very affordable (Italian) restaurant, with a wide selection of local foods as well. if you want to make your taste buds dance, this is a must.
Shopping - anywhere around the city centre. The prices don’t appear to be adapted to tourism, adequately priced items in every store, and there is always the option to pay in Euro with a fair exchange rate.

Mirogoj Graveyard
What a great way to celebrate Halloween or in Croatia All Saints’ Day than to go to north Zagreb at the foots of the Medvenica mountain and check out the Mirogoj cemetery. This amazing attraction was built in the Austrian Hungarian empire with huge brick walls and stunning baroque architecture. the mausoleums of prominent Zagreb aristocracy are scattered around and the forests in the background sets a tranquil and mellow ambiance.
The best time to head out is in autumn when the leaves change colour and the fog sets in. make sure not to stay too long because as the sun sets. the fog gets heavier and heavier.
#fallingforfall
Esplanada Hotel
What a great time to take a stroll around the great Zagreb fog. It’s very interesting to experience a very heavy fog, something very unique to Central Europe and the uk for a matter of fact.
But either way. what better place to be than next to the Esplanada hotel in downtown Zagreb. The hotel features some amazing history as it was built for the orient express and was one of the stops from Paris to Istanbul.
Although it is a great place to be during summer. the autumn time is a special time when there are less tourists and one can take in all the sights and sounds of the city.
Make sure to spread the word because Zagreb is a great place to be during the fall!

Ribnjak Park
Zagreb really is a city filled with parks. Which isn’t surprising as it ranked one of the greenest cities by area and volume of trees and greenery in Europe.
Ribnjak park is a huge park right behind the great Zagreb cathedral. before in the past it would be a place where teenagers would go in the evening and hang out. But now it’s gotten much better and commercialised. With festivals and picnics being organised.
As with many of the parks in Zagreb it is situated in the very Center. a walk away from historic monuments such as the cathedral, Jelacic Square and the Dolan market.
I would highly recommend this park as a place to visit especially during the fall :)

Zrinjevac Park
This is the place to be during a nice autumn day. A great place to host a picnic or just relax on the grass Zrinjevac has a great vibe with fountains and a good amount of statues dedicated to the people that left their mark on the City of Zagreb and beyond.
At both ends of the park one can find old weather measuring equipment from the late 19th century. This is very interesting to see because expect for being functional measuring equipment they are also very nice works of art.
I would definitely recommend this park to tourists as well as any locals in the area as this park is very close to the Center of Zagreb next to Ban Jelacic Trg.

Zagreb Botanical Gardens
One place that should not be missed in Zagreb are the Botanical Gardens. these gardens have been around since the mid 19th century and are still thriving today.
This place is smack in the middle of Zagreb right next to the Esplenada Hotel and a 5 minute walk from the grand central train station. It’s crazy to think that next to a busy street and a railway there is a small little forest nestled between the busy intersections. but the best thing about this place is that is it sunken into the ground a-little which blocks all the sounds of life outside.
I would definitely recommend this to a friend. The pond and the red bridge to the east of the botanical gardens are a great place to take pictures.

Maksimirska Park
Maksimirska Park in the Center of Zagreb is a must see attraction in the city. Right downtown next to the football stadium and the Zagreb zoo lies a huge forest for a park.
Built during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This park mixes forest areas with well kept lawns and quaint baroque architecture. It is definitely a great place to come with friends and set up a picnic or stroll up the little hill located in the Center to old style cafe on top.
it is very easy to get there. there is plenty of parking opposite the road and trams regularly stop at the entrance. While there you can also hit up the Zoo and the many pastry shops in the area.

Zagreb Hiking
Most of the locals in Zagreb know about Sljeme and the wonderful hiking trails that lead up to the top of Medvenica mountain. aka (Bear Mountain). disclaimer. no more bears anymore.
But in all seriousness this hike is amazing especially in the fall time. the leaves change colour. the temperature is perfect for a brisk hike and the trails and scenic, with a number to choose from.
Once you reach the top there are a couple of cabins to choose to eat from. normally the bean stew is the most popular choice with home made sausages and strudel.
I would highly recommend this destination to any tourist or local in the area. especially on a sunny autumn day.

European country of islands in Balkan
you can seldom find a country in Europe which contains many beautiful islands . one of these excepts is Croatia. the country located in the northwestern part of Balkan Peninsula. the Capital of Croatia is ' Zagreb'. is in the north of the country. in Zagreb we visited ( Tkalčiceva street), many pubs , restaurants and people around the world. (St. Mark's church) was the second beautiful place that we visited. also ( Cathedral of the Assumption) was worthy to visit. after Zagreb , we visited (Dubrovnik old town), its most glamorous tourist place in Croatia. after that (Dalmatian islands) is amazing spot there to visit and many other islands. Zlatni Rat beach is also great and beautiful. #beachlife #croatia #trip #touristattractions #travelinspiration
Hotel Dubrovnik Magic
Zagreb is the biggest city in Croatia and it has amazing public transportation. But it doesn’t hurt it be in the Centre of the city within walking distance of all the major landmarks.
Hotel Dubrovnik is just there. In the heart of the city this giant structure feels timeless. it isn’t modern. but it isn’t heritage. Yet it’s both at the same time. The rooms are nice and elegant, Art Deco. and the main hallway opens up to the towering glass windows on the outside.
The buffet is good for breakfast with a couple of different restaurant options on the first floor including steak and the service is spectacular.
The location is one of the main features. It is on the main square and parliament, the main market place and other tourist attractions are only a 10 minute walk.
I would definitely recommend this hotel for the weekend tourist or for a couples getaway. especially during Christmas when Zagreb hosts its winter Christmas Gala right next to the hotel. 😊

Zagreb as the capital of Croatia seems to always lack a sense of presence, although often easily overlooked, but not completely no highlights, take a look at Saga The sights of Loeb are worth visiting:
1The Cathedral of the Assumption
commonly known as the Zagreb Cathedral, was destroyed in the 1880 earthquake and later rebuilt in 1899. The ruins include 13th-century frescoes, Renaissance backrest benches, marble altars and Baroque-style pulpit.
