The moment you drive into Yiwu, the Gobi suddenly splits open with a green seam — the Yiwu River, like a green ribbon, gently wraps the county town in the valley. On the first day, head straight to Huan Cai Lake. This lake really knows how to "change faces." In the morning, it’s crystal clear blue; by afternoon, the wind stirs up a pink hue. Local herders say you can tell the weather by the lake’s color, even more accurately than the forecast. Squatting there until sunset brings even more surprises: the evening glow splashes across the lake, green tinged with red like a spilled eyeshadow palette, and a white dress photographed there comes with its own soft light filter. In the evening, diving into the farmers' market is where you find the real flavor. At the entrance, a Uyghur uncle’s steaming lamb head stall sells for 48 yuan each, split open and full of meat, paired with 8 yuan lamb trotters that are a delight to gnaw on. Around the corner, Zuremu’s naan stall smells so tempting it hooks your feet; the scallion naan just out of the oven is snatched up quickly. Her twin sons swing wooden mallets to pound the naan while her daughter chases butterflies nearby. We picked a Sichuan restaurant for a shared table at a street food stall; the spicy, crispy skin was refreshing, and Wusu beer popped open with teeth. The smoky atmosphere mixed with the naan aroma soaked into our clothes. The second day was spent soaking in the poplar forest. The 470,000-acre sea of trees is breathtaking; 9,000-year-old dead trunks twist into all kinds of shapes, looking like alien sculptures. Standing in a red dress under the "Couple Poplars," the wind rustles dry leaves, and you almost hear the sound of time. The scenic area has no signal, which is just right for peace. Following herders, we rode camels through the forest, the sound of hooves on gravel especially clear. At noon, we ate roasted buns in Naomao Lake Town; the moment you bite into the crispy crust, the lamb juice is so hot it makes you stomp your feet, perfectly balanced by kvass to cut the grease. Finally, we went to Yishui Garden to listen to red stories. In front of the military horse sculpture, the guide said it once carried ammunition through a sea of fire, which made everyone’s noses sting. At dusk, sitting by the river, we saw plum trees hanging dark blue fruits and crabapples glowing bright red. During the Western Han Dynasty, the Western Regions Protectorate was established here; in the Eastern Han, it was the Yihe Commandery; during the Tang Dynasty, it was called Yizhou; in the Yuan Dynasty, it was known as Hamil; and in the Qing Dynasty, it was the Hami Prefecture. In 2016, it was upgraded from a prefecture to a city. This area was once the nomadic land of the Wusun, Xiongnu, and Uighur peoples, witnessing the cultural fusion between Central China and the Western Regions. The existing Hami Hui King’s Mansion (rebuilt in 2004) blends Han, Manchu, Mongolian, and Uighur architectural styles. The Hui King’s Tombs (a national-level cultural heritage site) are known as the "Golden Tombs." Also notable is the world intangible cultural heritage, the Hami Twelve Muqam, which features 258 melodies performed in a complete 10-hour rendition, accompanied by Hami Aijieke music. Tianshan Mountains offer you a refreshing summer experience. This time, I traveled over 3,000 kilometers alone to visit the long-awaited Xinjiang ❤️ I chose to depart at the end of May, before the peak season, when the grasslands have turned green and flowers are in full bloom. 🏔️ There are direct flights from Hong Kong, and you can choose seat A for the outbound flight and seat F for the return flight to enjoy views of the Tianshan Mountains. I opted for a round-trip from Urumqi and joined a small group of four people. 🔺 Self-driving is not highly recommended unless you truly love driving. Each journey takes several hours, which can be exhausting, and unfamiliar road conditions may pose risks. If you have three or four people, hiring a car for a private tour offers a better experience. Alternatively, you can join a local tour with fewer participants, like I did, as fewer people mean fewer hassles. I was fortunate to meet three friendly travel companions this time. We dined together, took photos, and had fun. Plus, most of the days during the trip were sunny 🌞, which made me very happy. We traveled along Provincial Road S101 and visited the Bai Li Danxia and Kenswat Reservoir. On the way, we encountered flocks of sheep—plump and adorable, making me want to pet them. The sheep grazing on distant hillsides were also very soothing ☺️. Highlights: Self-driving around the lake—if you have enough time, consider staying overnight 🏕️ to explore Sailimu Lake more deeply and leisurely for a better experience. Visited 🌸🌼 🔺 However, if you choose the "Air Grassland" option at Nalati Grassland, I wouldn’t recommend it. Even though it wasn’t peak season, there were already so many people, traffic jams, and long waits for shuttle buses. Interestingly, the most beautiful part was the journey up on the shuttle bus, while the destination itself wasn’t as impressive 😅. As for "Pastoral Family," I didn’t visit it, so I won’t comment. Since I joined a group tour, it wasn’t included in the itinerary 😭. Personally, I was most eager to visit Panlong Ancient Road. 🔺 At Kanas Grassland, the weather was sunny, and although we took shuttle buses, there weren’t many people, and we didn’t have to wait in long lines. The experience was much better. The mountain was adorned with wildflowers in yellow and blue, complemented by the blue sky, white clouds, and distant snow-capped mountains—a truly stunning view. 🔺 Two or three grasslands are enough to visit; seeing too many can make you feel indifferent. Interestingly, many of the most beautiful landscapes are along the way, while the actual scenic spots may not be as breathtaking 😂. Unexpectedly, both roads opened earlier than expected, allowing me to enjoy their scenic beauty along the way and making this trip even more fulfilling 😁. 🔺 The only regret was not being able to see vast fields of lavender, as it wasn’t the right season yet. Lavender blooms beautifully around mid-June. While passing by, I did see some lavender, but only a small portion was in bloom. (Leaving some regrets for next time 😉).

If you depart from Hami Bus Station, you can go to Yiwu County first, and then to Yanchi Town🚌. From Yanchi Town to the Colorful Lake, you can find a car at the bus station where you get off, and the price is CNY 10–30/person. It's actually less than 10 km, and a taxi ride costs only a dozen yuan💰. Remember to get the driver's phone number, and call the driver to pick you up when you go back😉. Accommodation in Yanchi Town costs CNY 100–150, but I suggest staying in Yiwu County, which is more convenient to visit other scenic spots🤗. It's more convenient to drive to the Colorful Lake, as it is not a very well-developed scenic spot, but it is a pink lake featured in the Chinese National Geography magazine💖. If you don't drive or take a bus, you can find a 1-day tour on various platforms, departing directly from Hami to the Colorful Lake and other places nearby, for a price of CNY 300+😎. September to October is the pinkest time🌸. The lake is currently blue and pink, and it will be pinker in good weather, but in bad weather, you may only see a blue and white lake😜. Don't go before June, as it is just an ordinary white salt lake before June, and it will slowly change color after June when it gets hot⚠. As an important town on the northern route of the Silk Road, Hami is home to many Silk Road cultural sites, mainly featuring Buddhist art. The Xiaonanhu Pagoda in Yizhou District is the most accessible. The 12-meter-high Tang Dynasty pagoda's murals have disappeared, but the base and body of the pagoda remain intact. The Wubao Tombs have unearthed Caucasian mummies, believed to have migrated from Europe. In the Hami Ghost City, the Aisikaier Ancient Fortress, built on the Yadan landform, was once a post station on the ancient Silk Road. If you want to visit ancient cities, the Manhan Ancient City in Barkol is a must-see. The Manhan Ancient City consists of the Han City, built in the ninth year of the Yongzheng period, and the Man City, built in the thirty-seventh year of the Qianlong period. Today, 20,000 people still live here. After visiting, don't miss the Dizang Temple and Xiangu Temple in Barkol. The Dahetang City in the center of the Barkol Basin is the largest Tang Dynasty city site in Hami, while the Lapuqiaoke City in Wubao Township is the remains of the Eastern Han Dynasty Yiwutun City and the Tang Dynasty Nazhi County. Forget about the Tianshan Mountains on the Urumqi group tour and the snow-capped peaks in Ili that can only be viewed from afar. In Hami, you can get up close to the Tianshan Mountains, including the Kerluk Glacier at the foot of the 4,886-meter-high Tomurti Peak, a virgin peak in the mountaineering world. The Eastern Tianshan Mountains in Hami offer a variety of landscapes. Miaergou was once the site of the Hami King's palace. Baishitou is a resort area consisting of forests and pastures. The ancient trees in Hanqigou make it the perfect summer retreat. Songshutang is a great place for skiing. Nearby, you can find the only Tianshan Temple in Xinjiang and the Mingsha Mountain, where you can go sand sliding. Naomaohu in Yiwu County doesn't actually have a lake, but it's an oasis where late-ripening Hami melons are grown. If you visit in autumn, the highlight is naturally the 400,000 mu of primitive Populus euphratica forest. Apart from the city center of Yizhou District, the attractions in other areas of Hami are somewhat scattered. Self-driving travelers can connect Hami with Turpan and eastern Changji to form a large loop around the northern and southern parts of the Eastern Tianshan Mountains. You can reach Hami by high-speed train from Gansu or Urumqi, or by direct flight. Hami Yizhou District has four bus stations, with buses to various towns in Yizhou District, as well as Barkol and Yiwu. Some bus routes also stop at Tianshan attractions.

Drive east from Hami for about an hour along National Highway 335, and you'll see a pink and purple lake on your left. This is Fantasy Lake. The lake is rich in minerals, and the water changes color depending on the weather and light. The lake is surrounded by colorful algae and plants, making it a dreamlike place.
