Yama-dera (山寺, lit. "Mountain Temple"), (山号 宝珠山; Sangō Hōshu-zan) is the popular name for the Buddhist temple of Risshaku-ji (立石寺) located northeast of Yamagata City, in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. Its main image is a hibutsu statue of Yakushi Nyōrai. The temple has been a place for pilgrimage for centuries, and is designated as both a Place of Scenic Beauty and as a National Historic Site[1] It is located within the borders of the Zaō Quasi-National Park. The temple buildings clinging to the steep, forested, rocky hillsides are picturesque and unusual.
Snow Monsters
A snowboarders and skiers’ haven, Zao Onsen in Yamagata is famous for “snow monsters” as the trees turn into huge monster-like shapes during deep winter.
We initially planned to snowboard here but couldn’t as I was still healing from my knee injury. So, we decided to take the ropeway to the top for the night illumination, buuuuut it was -10C, we were underdressed, and the strong gusts of wind were unbearable.
There are many hot springs around the town, and without a doubt, we submerged ourselves in one of the delightful outdoor onsens.
Urrrrgh! I’ll definitely come back ❄️❤️

Yamagata has many private hot spring hotels. It's hard to book Ryokan Azumaya because it has shuttle bus to pick up guests. Here are seven pools and four hot springs. They are available for male and female guests at different time. There is Takimikan and five open-air plunge baths of "根っこ風呂" that cut through the root of chestnut trees of 250 years old.
My friend Miyuki Sato just send me her hiking pictures. It was taken from the top of mountain in Yamagata prefecture on early Oct. The view is very stunning! Fantastic! 😍😍😍 We met last 2 years whenever I was visiting Zao onsen during my winter trip to Japan. She advises me to visit Yamagata in Autumn and so will guide me there. I can't wait shall my luck come true.

Winter wonders at Zao, Snow Monster
This is a nature wonders only can be seen in the winter times with the strong cold winds to form the layers of icicles on the tee branches. Each formation has its distinct features that looks like a monster from a distance. You will really admire the snow mountains scenery with so many 'monsters' surrounding you. It will be a nice background with the sun light shining behind when you are taking the photos.
In addition, it is also a famous skiing resort with the powdery snows blanketing the whole mountain slope. You will not be disappointing when you stay at the skiing resort with a nice Onsen among a fantastic snow view right in front of the hot open air onsen. It is a best place to soak into the onsen after a long day of walk. There are a lot of onsen hotels or ryokans at Zao Onsen, but you are required to book 6 months earlier if you want to stay at the good locations.
It is pretty easy to access from Tokyo to Yamagata by the Yamagata Shinkansen. then, you just arrange the hotel pickup to fetch you from Yamagata Station.
Skiing Season
#thingstodo The best ski resort we’ve ever been to in Japan. Superb snow quality that is comparable to Niseko but WAYYYYYYYY less people. Also less touristy than Niseko and Hakuba.
3 hours JR from Tokyo to Yamagata and 40 minutes bus from Yamagata to Zao.
The mountain is huge despite all the entrances are relatively close. A lot of courses for all skill levels.
No driving is required as everywhere is walkable in this little snow town. Choose an onsen ryokan to stay at, onsen here is legit and helps with the soreness after an entire day of workout.
Love the snow monsters at the peak.
Don’t think I’ll ever go back to Niseko again. 🤣
Zao Onsen Ski Resort
#thingstodo I went end of March and the weather was perfect! but the snow was a little bit harder this time of year. Getting around the mountain is very easy with the Sky Lift cable cart systems and variety of slopes to go down.
It's very tourist friendly and getting to the mountain was very easy by bus from Yamagata station. Cost about 1000yen for a round trip on the coach bus.
Japan> Zao Ice Tree in Yamagata, Skiing Guide
📍>
The Zao Range (ざおうれんぽう) is majestic, spanning Yamagata and Miyagi counties, with the main peak Kumano-dake (elevation 1,841 meters) located on the Yamagata side. Beautiful scenery can be seen all year round, especially the autumn red leaves on the mountain top and the 'Zao Ice Tree' of Zao Mountain in northeastern Yamagata, which is one of the absolute winter views in Japan.
.
💠During the entire ski season, the 'Ice Tree Group' appearing on the upper part of the ski resort is very spectacular. In addition to being able to ski on the 'Ice Tree Primitive Snow Road' during the day and admire the ice trees on both sides of the ski trail, there is also an ice tree light show at night. Under the colorful lights, the ice trees look spectacular and mysterious. With 26 snow trails and 41 ropeways, no matter how big the scale is, it's impossible to ski all in one day, so it's recommended to stay at least one night.
.
💠How to get there:
Snow friends, you can choose Air China's direct flight to Sendai, with one flight each on Wednesday and Sunday, with a stopover in Shanghai.
The direct flight on Wednesday and Sunday, the departure time from Beijing is 7:20, and the departure time after stopping in Shanghai is 10:40. Arrive at Sendai Airport at 14:25 Japanese time.
.
The general route is: take the 'Sendai Airport Line' from Sendai Airport, and arrive at 'Sendai Station' 25 minutes later; change to the 'JR Senzan Line' at 'Sendai Station', and arrive at 'Yamagata Station' about 1 hour and 15 minutes later.
.
💠From Sendai Airport to Yamagata Station, there is another mode of transportation, called the express bus, with a one-way fare of 1,500 yen, half price for children under 12, and it takes 80 minutes to reach Yamagata Station. However, if you take a plane from Beijing with a stopover in Shanghai, you won't be able to catch the departure time of the express bus. Unless some snow friends fly to Sendai Airport from an airport in Japan, see if the arrival time can catch up with one of the four express buses a day. Snow friends, please check the arrival time on the day and decide whether to choose the express bus.
.
💠Take the Shinkansen from Tokyo
After snow friends land at Tokyo Haneda or Narita Airport, take a car to 'Tokyo Station' and take the Tohoku Shinkansen, a one-stop service to 'Yamagata Station', and then take a bus from 'Yamagata Station' to the ski resort.
The one-way fare for the Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Yamagata Station: 11,680 yen (about 680 RMB)
The Shinkansen journey time: 2 hours 41 minutes
When you arrive at 'Yamagata Station', refer to the above 'Yamagata Station → Zao Onsen' bus timetable and take the bus to go.

Hotel Metropolitan Yamagata
#2024wish
The room is very comfortable, the bathroom has a good size bath, the AC is quiet but there is a bit of condensation dripping from the AC. The bed has good medium firm mattress. Can't hear any noise from the corridor or on the street. It has view of the backside of the hotel, fairly private. Breakfast has 2 choices which is either Western or Japanese, both are good taste but a bit on the expensive side, service is good especially the front desk staff who also helped me to book a restaurant in Tokyo. The location is unbeatable with direct internal access to Yamagata Station, only 5-10 min from most restaurants near the Station area.overall it awesome place

Throwing snow in Yamagata
Finally visited the snow monsters after so many years!
Magnificent blue emerald jade liquid in Zao
Mount Zao is an active volcano that straddles the border of Miyagi and Yamagata Prefectures. At a towering 1,841 meters, it is one of Tohoku’s tallest mountains. A stunning crater lake lies at its summit. The crater is called Okama due to its resemblance to a large cooking pot.
When we reached the Okama Observatory, the fog covered the entire surface.Hubby said it was impossible to see anything.
Oh no, our man drove hours for days!
The fog remained when we climbed to the top.Always hopeful as I prayed....
Guess what? The fog dissipated rapidly as we climbed.

Zangwang Hot Spring is located in the foothills of Zaowang Mountain in Yamagata Prefecture. It is one of the oldest hot spring spots in Japan that was discovered before 1900. Because the role of sulphur springs can make children grow up healthily, it is known as "Jianer Soup". At the same time, it also has the effect of making skin white and tender, so it is also known as "beauty skin soup". In addition, it has also opened one of the largest ski resorts in the country, and the winter is very popular due to the arrival of skiers.
Zangwangshubing, that is an amazing beauty. Skiing and hoarfrost are also the ones I am most looking forward to, and the first time I walked on snow, it seems that it is a super-expensive experience.
The formation of hoarfrost requires a perfect help from time to time, and it is also a rare natural phenomenon. Every winter, in December, the junction of Yamagata Prefecture and Miyagi Prefecture in the northeastern part of Japan, on the Zangwang Mountain at an altitude of 1661 meters above sea level, the dry cold wind from Siberia meets the humid water vapor of the horse warm current, bringing the West Japan Sea coast A lot of snowfall, when the air containing a lot of water is condensed into frost, the frost on the coniferous forest is thicker and thicker, eventually forming a variegated, weird and beautiful hoarfrost, which also gave birth to the stunning Wang Lianfeng here. Amazing natural wonders. Due to the extremely rare and magnificent "Snow Monster" wonder, it is now the most representative and most popular viewing place in Northeast Japan.

March 3 is the local daughter's day. The source of this festival can be traced back to the Heian era more than 1,000 years ago. At that time, people had the habit of holding a "free disease-free" prayer activity on the first day of the next day. At this time, people called the Yin-Yang division (the sorcerer) to pray to the gods of the heavens and the earth, offering seasonal food, in the river, the sea. I drifted some paper and made it even. In the hope of sending your own bad luck to the dummy, and then take it away. Moreover, the aristocratic girls of that era had the habit of dolls. The method was similar to our current family. Over time, slowly, the two customs overlap and evolved into today's daughter's day. And because the old calendar March 3 is the time when the peach blossoms are in full bloom, there is also the name of the "Peach Blossom Festival".
