Xiuwu County is located in northwest Henan Province and is under the administration of Jiaozuo City. In the course of defeating the Shang dynasty, King Wu of Zhou stationed his troops here and trained them, which is where the county gets its name: Xiuwu means “to rest troops.” Xiuwu has a long history and many historical artifacts. Historical sites here include the Ligu archaeological site of the Neolithic Longshan culture, the ancient Yuci kiln in Dangyang, the tomb of literary master Han Yu (768-824), the Shengguo Temple, and the pagoda of the Shengguo Temple.

Heard of Henan before? If you have, it’s likely for the Shaolin Temple or Longmen grottoes (check out my other posts for a review on those cultural highlights) but it’s not often that YunTai mountain is talked about as a must-go place.
Situated in the north of the province, YunTai mountain not only hosts beautiful waterfalls, monkey trails and mountain top temples, but also the Red Rock Gorge. This really took my breath away with miles of stairs up and down the crevice with the characteristic… you’ve guessed it! Red rocks!
The whole scenic area is easily accessible via tourist bus, cable car and boat!

🚉Transportation tips:
After exiting Xiuwu West Railway Station, there are direct buses and shared taxis at the entrance. Taxis are much faster than buses. The bus will take you to the main entrance of the scenic area. The shuttle bus in the scenic area can be boarded and alighted at any stop. You can see Zifang Lake on the left side of the bus, surrounded by mountains like an ink painting.
🗓Itinerary:
The stops are Heishiling Service Area, Anshang Service Area, Fenghuangling Cableway, Hongshixia, Xiaozhaigou, and Zhuyufeng.
📝Tips:
Heishiling Service Area: This service area is relatively old, and there are not as many food options as Anshang Service Area.
Anshang Service Area: A relatively new service area with plenty of food and homestays.
Fenghuangling Cableway: You can take the cableway directly to Fenghuangling, and then hike up the mountain to Zhuyufeng. Take the downhill cableway from Zhuyufeng to descend the mountain.
Hongshixia: Our first stop, red rocks, walking in the snow, walking through the rocks, like walking in a painting, see pictures 1-3.
Xiaozhaigou: Our second stop, after visiting Hongshixia, continue to take the shuttle bus to the next stop. Xiaozhaigou has: Monkey Valley, Quanpu Gorge, and Tanpu Gorge.
Monkey Valley is on the right side of the square.
Walk inside the square to reach Quanpu Gorge and Tanpu Gorge, with beautiful ice hanging in Quanpu Gorge. There is no need to climb up to see Yuntai Waterfall in this season, as the waterfall has stopped flowing due to the cold weather.
Zhuyufeng: After visiting Xiaozhaigou, take the shuttle bus to the next stop. This section of the road is a very unique experience! Since the mountain is relatively high, the bus will take tourists to the mountainside, and this section of the road takes about 20 minutes, all in the tunnel.
Fenghuangling: Descend 2,800 meters from the top of Yuntai Mountain. It feels much easier to descend, and you can prepare trekking poles. This section of the road is full of snow and trees, extremely romantic. Finally, arrive at Fenghuangling, where you can take the downhill cable car to descend the mountain, and look down from the cable car to see the mountains.

The winter landscape of Yuntai Mountain is extremely rich, with lakes, waterfalls, red rocks, ice hanging, and snow-capped mountains. 🌲Hongshi Gorge: A must-visit attraction, the entire canyon is named after the exposed rocks that are purplish-red or brownish-red. 1.2 billion years ago, this was once part of the ocean. Due to the orogeny of the earth's crust, the seabed rose and emerged from the sea to become land.
🌲Xiaozhai Valley: It includes three main attractions, Quanpu Gorge, Tanpu Gorge, and Monkey Valley. Xiaozhai Valley is said to be the place where Liu Wuzhou, a hero of the peasant uprising at the end of the Sui Dynasty, and Li Shimin, Emperor Taizong of Tang, camped.
Monkey Valley: It is announced by the State Council as a national-level monkey nature reserve, with a large number of wild monkey groups distributed in the scenic area.
Quanpu Gorge: It has Yuntai Waterfall, the largest single-level waterfall in Asia, with a height of 314 meters, which is magnificent and impressive.
Tanpu Gorge: This scenic area is mainly known for its springs and small waterfalls, and is known as "a spring every three steps, a waterfall every five steps, and a pool every ten steps."
🌲Zhuyu Peak: Tang Dynasty poet Wang Wei once lived here and wrote the famous poem "On festive occasions more than ever one thinks of one's dear ones far away, wearing cornel twigs, one is missing one person all day." There is a Yaowang Cave in the middle of the peak, which is said to be the place where Sun Simiao, the Medicine King of the Tang Dynasty, collected herbs and refined elixirs. Inside the cave, there is an ancient yew tree, which is about a thousand years old and is a rare famous tree in China.

Yunshang Courtyard is full of poetry and distance. There is no TV in the room, which gives people more time to look at the scenery, be in a daze, look up at the bright moon and stars at night. Jiaozuo Yuntai Mountain Phoenix Ridge is an important part of the Yuntai Mountain Scenic Area's Cornus Peak Scenic Area, known for its high and beautiful mountain stone texture and the green trees dotted among them. Especially the glass plank road hanging on the mountain body of more than 1,000 meters, it is breathtaking, looking far away, one side is flat, the other side is continuous peaks.
