This is probably the ultimate aesthetic in the bones of our ancestors
I rarely use "shocking" to describe a place, a 170 square meter hall
Hiding the gods and Buddhas all over the sky, about 2000 is not small, but big enough to shock people standing on the hanging beam, dazzling and vivid architectural skills
I can't help but sigh at the ingenuity of the ancients

| A feast for the senses.
Thanks to "Black Myth: Wukong", the hidden gem Qianfo Temple has regained its glory and entered the public eye! We are world travelers - Seagull and Fries, and we were fortunate to have enjoyed a quiet afternoon here on the eve of Xiaoxitian's popularity, deeply feeling an awakening of Chinese aesthetics. Trust me, this small expense of 35 yuan will be a valuable cultural feast! If you are visiting Xiaoxitian for the first time, be sure to bookmark this detailed guide.
What's the charm of Xiaoxitian?
When it comes to Xiaoxitian, one has to mention the spectacle of "full hall hanging sculptures". Hanging sculptures, that is, colored sculptures hanging on the walls, originated from the Tang Dynasty. Rare treasures are mostly found in Shanxi, and Xiaoxitian is one of the masterpieces!
Why is it known as the "hanging sculpture masterpiece"?
- Huge number of Buddha statues: The main hall of only 169 square meters can accommodate nearly two thousand Buddha statues. When you step into it, the visual impact is instantly overwhelming, and the shock hits the soul.
- Vivid Buddha statues: Pursuing realism, Buddha, birds, and beasts are all lifelike. If you taste it carefully, you will find that each Buddha statue has its unique expression, and none of them are the same.
- Exquisite spatial layout: All hanging sculptures gradually shrink from bottom to top and slightly tilt. When you are in it, it seems that the surrounded gods and Buddhas use pavilions, towers, and pavilions as the stage, staring at the world, creating a wonderful feeling of being in the scene.
How to take big shots in Xiaoxitian?
- Recommended camera position: Blood handprint corridor, capture the atmosphere of "eighty-one difficulties" in the journey to the west.
- Second camera position: "The Way to the West" mountain gate, take a photo in front of the red wall of the Buddha character, and the person and the scene are perfectly integrated.
- There is a door hole: Use the door hole for frame composition, and the picture is neat and uniform.
- Inside the Daxiong Hall: The hanging sculptures are rich but easy to appear messy. Focus on a Buddha statue or use a guide line to compose the picture to capture the beauty of order.
- Group photo: Try to take a low-angle shot outside the hall, so that the hanging sculptures and people can blend harmoniously.
Best shooting time: It is recommended to go in the morning, the light is soft, easy to capture details; the interior is dark in the afternoon, not conducive to viewing.
Transportation Guide:
- Xixian is remote, it is better to drive by yourself.
- There is a special car transfer at Yuncheng North Station, from 9 am to 5 pm, suitable for a day trip.
- You can also take a high-speed train to Linfen, and then charter a direct bus to Xiaoxitian.

Although I had read a lot of information and participated in ancient architecture training in advance, I was still shocked when I saw it on the spot. There are nearly 2,000 Buddha statues in a space of more than 100 square meters. It is hard to imagine that more than 300 years ago, countless monks and craftsmen who adhered to their original intentions created the stunning Western Paradise in the unknown mountain nest for 18 years. Such a precious ancient architectural miracle is worth seeing!

Check in at the ancient building with Black Goku~Xiaoxitian.
It was built in the 7th year of Chongzhen in the Ming Dynasty (1634) and was presided over by the Dongming Zen master. It covers an area of only more than 1,100 square meters. It is located in the west and faces the east. It is built on the Phoenix Mountain and is surrounded by mountains on three sides. The buildings are scattered on the top of the mountain. Due to the limitation of the terrain and the implication of the Western Paradise, the main buildings are placed on the east-west axis. The temple is naturally divided into three courtyards: upper, lower, and front. There are 20 buildings of different sizes, heights, and symmetries in the limited space, and the cave is used as a door to connect the three building groups. The Ming Dynasty colored hanging sculptures in the temple are famous and are known as the Chinese Hanging Sculpture Art Museum and the "Hanging Sculpture Finale" in the history of Chinese sculpture art.

September travel recommendation: Linfen Xiaoxitian in Shanxi Province | Three Thousand Worlds.
|Three Thousand Worlds. Xiaoxitian in Xi County, Shanxi, also known as Qianfoan, is located on the top of Fenghuang Mountain, 1 km northwest of Xi County, Linfen City, Shanxi Province. It is a Buddhist Zen monastery.
Xiaoxitian was first built in 1629 during the Chongzhen reign of the Ming Dynasty under the auspices of Master Dongming. It was repaired many times during the Qing Dynasty. Most of the existing buildings were built at the end of the Ming Dynasty. It covers an area of only more than 1,100 square meters. The monastery is built on Fenghuang Mountain, surrounded by mountains on three sides, with staggered buildings. Its layout is divided into upper and lower courtyards, with two mountain gates, a cave as a gate, separating and connecting the upper courtyard, lower courtyard, and front courtyard.
The main buildings of the upper courtyard are the Mahavira Hall, with Manjusri and Samantabhadra Halls on the left and right, and the North Pole Hall and Ma Wang Temple on both sides;
The lower courtyard mainly includes the Wuliang Hall, Weituo Hall, Moyun Pavilion, Bagua Pavilion, and the Zhong and Gu Lou on the Weituo Hall. The Wuliang Hall is the main hall of the lower courtyard, with five bays in width and a corridor in front of the eaves. The hall houses the Wuliangshou Buddha. The hall was built in the early Chongzhen reign of the Ming Dynasty. It was named after the "Wuliangshou Buddha", which means "infinite Buddha Dharma". It is also known as the "Wuliang Hall" because it has no beams or pillars. It is the Dharma Hall of Xiaoxitian Temple, and also the Zen Hall where monks chant scriptures, preach Dharma, and take refuge. The Weituo Hall is located opposite the Wuliang Hall. Inside, there is a Weituo Buddha carved from a whole piece of nanmu wood in the fifth year of Shunzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty.
Xiaoxitian is famous for its Ming Dynasty colored hanging sculptures. It is known as the Museum of Chinese Hanging Sculpture Art, and the "Hanging Sculpture Masterpiece" in the history of Chinese sculpture art. The Daxiongbao Hall is full of hanging sculptures, with more than 1,000 clay sculptures of various sizes. These statues are arranged according to the 33 heavens, with clear order and appropriate size. The tallest is more than 3 meters, and the smallest is only the size of a thumb. The shapes are vivid and varied, with many but not chaotic, and complex but not miscellaneous. The five main Buddha statues on the front constitute the main body of the magnificent statue group in the hall, from south to north, they are the Medicine Master Buddha, Amitabha Buddha, Sakyamuni Buddha, Vairocana Buddha, and Maitreya Buddha. Above the ten great disciples are the exquisitely crafted "琉璃 Shengjing" and "Six Desires Heaven" hanging sculpture groups.
Hanging sculptures, also known as wall sculptures, are indoor colored clay sculptures with a frame, thick at the top and thin at the bottom, suspended in a prefabricated wooden frame fixed to the wall. The upper body of the clay sculpture leans slightly outward. When overlapped, the upper body of the lower layer blocks the feet of the upper sculpture. The multiple layers of overlap create a magnificent effect. The paint pigments are hand-processed from natural minerals. Xiaoxitian's craftsmen used the walls, columns, and purlins inside the building as a support to create various figures, scenes, and decorations. They also reflected the connections between them through ingenious transitions, coordinating with each other in various postures, creating a sense of space and reality of being in the air and looking down at the world.
In addition, the half-cloud pavilion in the lower courtyard also houses a complete Chinese Buddhist canon, the Yongle Beizang. The Buddhist canon was originally housed in the Holy Realm Temple, and was stored here after the founding of the People's Republic of China.
On November 20, 1996, Qianfoan was announced by the State Council of the People's Republic of China as the fourth batch of national key cultural relics protection units.

🌟In a space of less than 170 square meters, there are more than 1,900 densely packed statues. The most shocking thing about Xiaoxitian is the strong sense of oppression that hits you in the face!
✨Xiaoxitian is actually not very photogenic, with Buddhas everywhere, gold and color everywhere, and a sore neck from looking up, it's hard to grasp where the focus is! The exquisite and delicate gods and Buddhas in Xiaoxitian are suspended above the beams, also known as hanging sculptures. There is almost no second place in the country with such a similar space filled with colorful Buddha statues. It is extremely unique, extremely complicated, and extremely gorgeous!
💫Xiaoxitian is like a colored clay Buddhist version of "Along the River During the Qingming Festival", creating a full Buddhist world in a small hall. "Before Xiaoxitian, there were no full hanging sculptures, and after Xiaoxitian, there were no more full hanging sculptures"

Check-in at Xiaoxitian in Xi County
Xiaoxitian in Xi County, located at the top of Phoenix Mountain, one kilometer northwest of Xi County, Linfen City, Shanxi Province, is a Zen Buddhist temple. Originally named Qianfo An, it was founded by Zen Master Dongming in the second year of the Chongzhen period of the Ming Dynasty (1629). It was named after the thousand Buddha statues in the Mahavira Hall. Later, it was renamed 'Xiaoxitian' to distinguish it from another Ming Dynasty temple 'Daxitian' in the south of the city, as the plaque on the main gate reads 'Dao Ru Xitian' (Path to the Western Heaven).
The entire temple of Xiaoxitian covers an area of more than 1,100 square meters, with many halls and buildings such as the Mahavira Hall, Manjusri Hall, Samantabhadra Hall, Amitabha Hall, Heavenly King Hall, Weituo Hall, Ksitigarbha Hall, Bell Tower, and Drum Tower. The temple is divided into upper, middle, and front courtyards by gates. In fact, two-thirds of the temple's halls are double-story structures.
The cultural relic value of Xiaoxitian in Xi County mainly lies in the well-preserved hanging sculptures in the Mahavira Hall. Most of these hanging sculptures were painted and sculpted between the seventeenth year of the Chongzhen period of the Ming Dynasty (1644) and the thirteenth year of the Shunzhi period of the Qing Dynasty (1656), remaining dust-free for over three hundred years. The murals in the Mahavira Hall are even more precious, made with gold leaf and powder, resembling the dragon and phoenix patterns and imperial seals of the palace.

🏘️Introduction to Xiaoxitian:
Xiaoxitian, also known as Qianfo Temple, was founded by Zen Master Dongming. The main hall, Daxiong Hall, is filled with wooden and clay sculptures, exquisitely crafted, and is considered the 'masterpiece of suspended sculptures' in the history of Chinese sculpture.
📖Xiaoxitian is divided into the upper and lower courtyards. The lower courtyard is the main part of the temple, with the Wuliang Hall facing east, and the Weituo Hall opposite Wuliang Hall. The upper courtyard is the essence of the entire temple. The main hall, Daxiong Hall, is where the suspended sculptures are located, with the Manjusri and Samantabhadra halls on either side.
📖Daxiong Hall is divided into three parts: the main wall, the north wall, and the south wall🔈
📖Sculptures: There are more than 1,000 statues in total. The largest is 3 meters high, and the smallest is only the size of a fingernail. The Buddha statues are serene, kind-faced, vivid, and lifelike.

Xiaoxitian in Xixian County, Linfen, Shanxi, also known as Qianfo Nunnery, was founded by Zen Master Dongming in the second year of the Chongzhen period of the Ming Dynasty!
The Great Hall of Xiaoxitian houses the true statues of a thousand Buddhas suspended in the air, with exquisitely crafted birds, beasts, and exotic flowers and plants!
These suspended sculptures have endured for over four hundred years, with the largest being 3 meters high and the smallest only the size of a thumb; the colors of the sculptures are made from real gemstone powder, and the adhesive materials are very particular. The most important parts are covered with gold foil, so the sculptures are dust-free, radiant, and very impressive!

The first wave of Destiny people has already arrived at Xiaoxitian~
"Having seen the future, why not worship" is truly a classic scene~
Picture two is the real filming location
Countless gods and Buddhas swirl above the auspicious clouds~
🔮Xixian Xiaoxitian, also known as Qianfo Temple, is located on the cliff of Phoenix Mountain~
☯️Passing through the Lake of Release, one must first climb 145 steps to reach the first mountain gate. "Xiaoxitian" passes through the cave gate, then continues up the steps, which are 81 in total, "the path to the Western Heaven" steps are like tribulations, once you finish the steps, there are no more tribulations~ Finally, from the Hall of Immeasurable to the Great Hall, you still need to pass through 33 steps, steep and narrow, spiraling upwards, symbolizing the 33 heavens~
Entering the purification hall~~ I really understood what netizens meant by shock~ Everyone is amazed~ calling it a miracle~ Everyone is recording in their own way~
The suspended sculpture craftsmanship of the Western Heaven's sacred realm, recorded with totems, recreated with architecture~
The hall is full of suspended sculptures, complex yet orderly, staggered and ethereal, colorful and diverse in form~
High forms are majestic, thumb-sized ones are detailed and meticulous~
In the 169 square meters, there are seven treasure canopies hanging with pearls and jade, inlaid with the seven treasures of Buddhism: gold, silver, glass, tridacna, agate, amber, coral~ You really can't see the walls, three sides are all clay sculptures, 400 years without a speck of dust, hand-applied gold leaf, and still no dust, very well preserved~ The coloring inside, without light exposure, looks as new.
After saying so much, to summarize in one sentence, it interprets "the ultimate suspended sculpture"~
🔥🔥🔥🔥Last year today, Xiaoxitian was empty, but now it's different~ In a space of less than 10 square meters, roughly counted, more than a hundred people are bustling~ The incense in the courtyard is also flourishing, Shanxi! This time you are truly on fire🔥🔥🔥🔥

I really like Linfen! It's very livable
The Fen River runs through the city, and its river channel is wider than that of Taiyuan. It also has Binhe West Road, Binhe East Road, Wuyi Road, Jiefang Road... It feels like being in Linfen, but also like still being in Taiyuan.
The urban greening rate in Yaodu District is very high, and the air is humid. Every morning when you wake up, your skin feels hydrated. After two months of business trips to Linfen, my skin has improved. Another proof is that after the rain, if you look closely, you will find that the curbs of the non-motorized lanes are crawling with dense snails. Yes, I used 'dense' without exaggeration. See the picture for details, those with trypophobia beware! You have to walk carefully, and every step is crisp, the sound of life breaking.
The streets in the urban area are very distinctive. Standing on the Drum Tower and looking in all directions, the four streets are planned and constructed in an orderly manner. Taking a walk through the city, you will always encounter many surprises.
One street is full of pomegranate trees that you can reach out and pick. Parents who come to pick up and drop off their children can chat and pick sweet and sour pomegranates when they are ripe. Just imagine that scene, it's simply beautiful!
From the 'East Lin Lei Huo' gate of the Drum Tower, heading east is a bustling pedestrian street. It feels like Liuxiang in Taiyuan, haha.
The roadside is full of persimmon trees, unlike pomegranate trees, these persimmons grow very high, and you can't pick them even if you jump. When they ripen, they won't fall to the ground and smash everywhere.
Both sides of the street are planted with robust plane trees, and the summer is filled with green shade, full of romantic atmosphere, giving a fleeting illusion of being back in Hangzhou.
It is said that there is also a road lined with silk tree flowers, which bloom in August and September. Although I haven't seen it yet, it seems I can already smell that enchanting fragrance. How beautiful that street must be! Do Linfen friends know what this street is called?
As you can see, I am summarizing the distinctive streets of Linfen. So, if there are any other characteristic roads, please tell me quickly, let's go City walk!
Huaguo Street, Huaguo City, Linfen really lives up to its name. The Linfen Municipal Government is really good, thumbs up for the people of Linfen!
The city is well constructed, but unfortunately, after Shanxi Normal University moved away, it took away a large part of the population and economic flow. I can't quite understand what the pillar industry of Yaodu District is now. It feels like tourism, with the Drum Tower, Yaomiao, Huamen, Naota Courtyard? Yaodu Ancient Town, etc., haha. Not sure if this feeling is correct.
By the way, locals recommended some very distinctive snacks. For beef meatball noodles, you should eat at 'Sanmao's'. I've tried both the dry and soup noodles, they are very spicy and salty, not to my taste. Just try it once, I probably won't eat it a second time. I have to say, friends in Linfen have quite a heavy taste.
There is a 'Chenchen Rice Noodles' next to the Drum Tower, which is also said to be very delicious. The method is different from Taiyuan's rice noodles. I'll try it when I have time.

It is not recommended to take the high-speed rail, as the high-speed rail stations on both sides are a bit far from the city center, and the transfer process is a bit time-consuming.

There is a road on the right side of the square, walk straight for less than 100 meters, and you will reach an entrance to the scenic area. After entering, turn right to reach the place where you can take the electric car in the scenic area, turn left and walk about 300 meters to reach the Lower Temple of Guangsheng Temple (Water God Temple). Next to the entrance of the Lower Temple is the uphill walking path to the Upper Temple, it takes about ten minutes if you walk fast, generally about half an hour.

Get off at Hongtong Station, then take bus 301 back to Linfen (the last bus 301 is at 18:50), you can also find a shared taxi back to Hongtong West, 5 yuan per person.

Shanxi Tourism | Ming Dynasty Ancient Tower in the Center of a Small County - Xi County Drum Tower
Linfen Xi County Drum Tower
The Drum Tower consists of a platform and a pavilion on top, with a total height of 20.3 meters. According to the 'Xi Zhou Zhi' and the inscription under the ridge purlin, 'In the 45th year of the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, the official in charge of Xi Zhou affairs, Chu,' the beam structure, plaques, etc., retain original Ming Dynasty items.
The Drum Tower is located at the very center of the county, serving as a four-sided, through-street gate tower. Built during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, it is a brick-wood structure with a total height of about 20 meters. Above the gate is the main building with a cross-hipped roof with three eaves, decorated with flying eaves and glazed tiles, elegantly high and charming, with steps facing south that once allowed people to climb up and enjoy distant views.
Surrounding the gate are four stone plaques, showcasing the calligraphy of Song Zaiguang, the prefect of Xi Zhou during the Xianfeng period of the Qing Dynasty, reading 'East Screen Gu She,' 'West Belt Yellow River,' 'South Facing Ancient Ci,' and 'North Arch Jin Yang.' Each side of the pavilion also hangs large wooden plaques from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, such as Shu Guifang's 'Longquan Ancient County,' Song Zaiguang's 'Longevity Legacy,' Bai Longtai's 'Important Town of Hedong,' and Wang Juzheng's 'Heroic State of Sanjin.' Since ancient times, famous scenic spots have been showcases for literary and artistic talents, and Xi County Drum Tower is no exception.
The sacred land of Buddha, with sculptures hanging all over the hall—Xiaoxitian
Xiaoxitian, also known as Qianfo An (Thousand Buddha Nunnery), is located at the summit of Phoenix Mountain to the west of Xixian County in Linfen City, Shanxi Province. It is a Buddhist Zen monastery founded by the Ming Dynasty monk Dongming in the second year of the Chongzhen era. It was originally named for the thousand Buddha statues in the Mahavira Hall, and later renamed 'Xiaoxitian' (Little Western Heaven) to differentiate it from another Ming Dynasty monastery to the south of the city, 'Daxitian' (Great Western Heaven), due to the inscription 'The Way to Western Heaven' above its heavy gates.
The total building area of Xiaoxitian in Xixian County is over 1100 square meters, with many halls such as the Mahavira Hall, Manjusri Hall, Samantabhadra Hall, Beamless Hall, Heavenly King Hall, Wei Tuo Hall, Ksitigarbha Hall, Bell Tower, Drum Tower, etc. Caves serve as doors, dividing the upper, middle, and front courtyards. In fact, two-thirds of the temple's halls are double-layered structures.
The essence of the temple lies in the Mahavira Hall, where, in addition to the five main Buddhas, the walls, beams, columns, and eaves are also filled with Buddha statues. It is said that there are more than 1900 Buddha statues in the hall.
Each Buddha statue has a different story, surrounded by layers of pavilions, twelve musical courtesans, moon-chasing divine birds, peacocks, parrots, dragons, phoenixes, and auspicious clouds. The sculptures are lifelike and radiantly colorful, more magnificent and spectacular than one can imagine the Buddhist realm to be, resembling a celestial palace.
Ticket price 🎫 25, very affordable
The temple is not very large, but it is filled with numerous Buddha statues, inspiring awe and grandeur.
Before Xiaoxitian, there was no hall filled with hanging sculptures; after Xiaoxitian, there will be no other with such a hall.
Friends, take a closer look and you will understand
Xixian County's Xiaoxitian in Shanxi
Xiaoxitian, also known as Thousand Buddha Nunnery, is located at the peak of Phoenix Mountain west of Xixian County in Linfen City, Shanxi Province. It is a Buddhist Zen monastery founded by the Ming Dynasty monk Dongming in the second year of the Chongzhen era. It was originally named for having a thousand Buddha statues in the Mahavira Hall. Later, due to the inscription 'Path to the Western Paradise' above the main gate and to distinguish it from another Ming Dynasty monastery in the south of the city named 'Daxitian,' it was renamed 'Xiaoxitian.'

👍Most recommended:
The total building area of Xiaoxitian in Xixian County is more than 1,100 square meters, with many halls such as the Mahavira Hall, Manjusri Hall, Samantabhadra Hall, Beamless Hall, Heavenly King Hall, Weituo Hall, Ksitigarbha Hall, Bell Tower, and Drum Tower. The monastery is divided into the upper, middle, and front courtyards by using caves as entrances. Two-thirds of the temple halls are double-layered structures, with layers upon layers and twists and turns, creating a secluded path that not only has the layout of a typical monastery but also the charm of garden architecture.
🌟Highlights:
In the Mahavira Hall's heavenly pavilions, there are many beautifully posed flying Apsaras, divine birds, peacocks, and parrots, standing amidst the misty clouds. On the railings of the platform in front of the hall, there are twelve musical Bodhisattvas. All the statues here, with their well-proportioned human figures, plump and soft skin, lively and natural postures, and smooth lines of clothing, range from over 3 meters tall to small enough to fit in the palm of a hand. Although most of the more than a thousand statues in the temple are preserved here, the vast sculpture group is complex yet not cluttered, naturally orderly, set against the layered heavenly pavilions. The entire hall, with its colorful decorations, not only presents a charming scene of a fairy palace and Buddha land but is also rich in the breath of life.
