Huangyanghe Reservoir
Huangyanghe Reservoir is located in Liangzhou District, Wuwei City, in the eastern part of the Hexi Corridor in Gansu Province. The dam site is on the Huangyang River, 50 km southeast of Wuwei City. The reservoir controls a drainage area of 828 square kilometers. It is a medium-sized Class III annual regulation reservoir with comprehensive benefits, mainly for irrigation, but also for flood control, power generation, and tourism. The main structures are Class 3, and the secondary structures are Class 4. The current maximum dam height is 52 meters, with a total reservoir capacity of 56.44 million cubic meters and an irrigation area of 221,800 mu. The hub structures include a dam, a water conveyance tunnel, a flood discharge tunnel, and a dam-back power station.
Huangyang River is a tributary of the Shiyang River system in the western inland of China. It originates from the Shuanglong Mountain, Moqi Mountain, and Heigou Mountain in Tianzhu Tibetan Autonomous County. The main tributaries are the Xiamen River and the Haxi River, which converge with the large and small gullies along the way and are intercepted by the Huangyang Reservoir at Shuixiakou in Zhonglu Township, Liangzhou District. The main road above the reservoir is 21 km long and 15–75 meters wide, with an average longitudinal slope of 1/50. The reservoir has a catchment area of 828 square kilometers, of which 637 square kilometers are outside Liangzhou District and 191 square kilometers are within Liangzhou District. The river below the reservoir flows naturally down the Shuixiakou, converges with the gullies along the way, and is then controlled by the head of the Huangyang River Canal to be introduced into the canal for irrigation. The river course from the reservoir to the head of the canal is 7.2 km long. During the flood season, some of the floodwater flows down the river and into the Zamu River, with National Highway 312 and the Lanzhou-Xinjiang Railway passing through its lower reaches.

Hexi Corridor, History East and West [2] Wuwei China, Ancient Liangzhou Day Tour.
Wuwei, meaning military power, was one of the four counties established by Emperor Wu of Han to show that the military power of the Han Empire had reached Hexi. This is also an ancient capital. The first impression of Wuwei is that it is clean, much cleaner than Lanzhou, and the people here dress more fashionably. I even feel that it is more like a provincial capital. The city is also very prosperous, and the attractions in the city are not far away. You can walk around and feel it.
⛱️Must-visit attractions: There are three that can be visited in one day. Kumarajiva Temple, Leitai Han Culture Museum, and Wuwei Western Xia Museum. The Western Xia Museum is next to the Wuwei Confucian Temple.
🌄Travel tips: The three attractions are very close, and you can walk or take a taxi. Be sure to learn about the local culture and history before visiting these attractions. After all, Wuwei is an ancient city with a rich cultural history. For example, Kumarajiva Temple, the introduction in the city is relatively simple, but in fact, Kumarajiva made great contributions and suffered more hardships, so he is a world-class Buddhist scholar and is very worthy of respect. (I heard some guides in the scenic area talking about it in a mysterious way, maybe to make the tour group feel interesting. In fact, I think history needs to be real to make people feel awe.)
There is a lot of history about the Western Han and Eastern Han dynasties in the Leitai Han Tomb. If you know something about the history of the Han dynasty, you will be very excited. The Flying Horse of Gansu was unearthed in the Leitai Han Tomb. You can also enter the tomb to experience it.
As for the Western Xia Museum, you also need to know some history, and then you can feel the colorful Western Xia culture.
🏨Accommodation tips: I think the surrounding environment is very good. As long as you live in Liangzhou District, there are many night markets and markets, and it is very convenient to eat.
💗Other tips: Remember to wear a hat and mask, and pay attention to sun protection.
Gansu Wuwei Haizang Temple - a hidden gem and a national protected temple.
I first visited Wuwei in September 2020, when the area around Haizang Temple was still desolate. Now, Haizang Park has been built, and the previous reed marsh has become a wetland park, with even pheasants shuttling through the forest (Figure 17). At that time, I asked the monks in the temple whether it was called Haicang Temple or Haizang Temple. He said that the surrounding wetland was full of reeds, as if there was a temple hidden in the sea. But now the pinyin on the road signs is zang (Figure 18), probably because Gucangzang Road is next to it. I visited again in September 2023 and October 2024.
In 1981, Haizang Temple was announced as the fourth batch of provincial cultural relics protection units in Gansu Province, and in 2013, it was announced by the State Council as the seventh batch of national key cultural relics protection units. Now there is a national protection monument under the stone lion outside the temple, and there are two new and old provincial protection monuments after entering the door.
Its founding date is uncertain, one said it was during the Yuanfeng period of Song Shenzong (1078-1086). It is also said that during the Liangzhou League of the Southern Song Dynasty, four major temples were built one after another, and Haizang Temple was one of them. During the Chenghua period of the Ming Dynasty (1465-1487), the eunuch Zhang Rui rebuilt it on the original site, and the Emperor Xianzong gave the temple the name "Qinghua Zen Temple". It was rebuilt during the Shunzhi period of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1661), and after several destructions and repairs, the existing buildings were built in the 1980s and 1990s, and it is one of the eight ancient Liangzhou sceneries.
The highest point in the temple is the Lingjun Ancient Tower, which was built in the fourth year of Daxing (321). It is a high-rise building built by the Zhang regime of the Former Liang (301-376) who built the capital in Guzang (now Wuwei) during the Sixteen Kingdoms period. This famous high-rise building in the northwest is recorded in the history books because of its grand scale and the political and military defense measures during the Former Liang period, and it has been praised by later literati.
There are also ancient sites such as the Taoist Mansion and the God of Wealth Temple in the park. The overall greening is very good, and there are not many tourists. You can travel through it to reminisce about the past and chant today.
The capital of the northwest, now a city that has fallen into obscurity!
In the northwest, there is a place that was once the ancient capital of the Six Dynasties and the capital of the northwest, but now it has become a city that has fallen into obscurity! Curious friends may ask, who is this ancient capital of the Six Dynasties and the capital of the northwest? What different scenery is there? With these questions and curiosity, let's talk about Wuwei today. Wuwei City, referred to as "Wu" or "Liang", was once the capital of the Former Liang, Later Liang, Southern Liang, Northern Liang, Great Liang, and Western Xia (Shenzong), hence the name "Ancient Capital of the Six Dynasties, Capital of the Northwest". "The Yellow River is far up in the white clouds, a lonely city with ten thousand mountains" "Drunk lying on the battlefield, don't laugh, how many people have returned from the ancient wars" ... The familiar "Liangzhou Ci" is flowing with the city's majesty and heroism. According to statistics, there are about 2,000 border fortress poems in "The Complete Tang Poems", of which more than 100 poems are related to Liangzhou. Across 32,300 square kilometers of land, deserts, Gobi, snow-capped mountains, glaciers, grasslands, rivers, lakes, Wuwei broke through a number of relatively closed geographical units, forming a unique cultural connotation and geographical spectacle, grottoes and art, language and text, ethnic and fusion, grapes and wine, here is a brilliant corner.
Tiantishan Grottoes | Art Treasure House.
The Tiantishan Grottoes in Wuwei, the originator of the grottoes on the Hexi Corridor, are not to be missed. It was excavated in the Northern Liang period of the Eastern Jin Dynasty and the Sixteen Kingdoms (397-439), and is one of the earliest excavated grottoes.
The high monk Tanyao of Liangzhou, who presided over the construction here, later presided over the construction of the Yungang and Longmen Grottoes.
The Tiantishan Grottoes were announced as the fifth batch of national key cultural relics protection units.
The grottoes have been severely damaged by wars and natural disasters over the years. The surviving cultural relics were mostly moved to the Wuwei Museum due to the construction of the Huangyang Reservoir, and a small part was exhibited in the Gansu Museum.
At present, only the Big Buddha Cave is open in the scenic area. Looking around, there are some smaller grottoes distributed on the high cliffs, which are not open to the public.
Passing through the Arhat Cave, when the Big Buddha Cave suddenly appeared in front of my eyes, it was hard not to exclaim in my heart!
Under the dome of the Big Buddha Cave, each statue has a different expression; the murals remaining on the left and right walls of the cave are clearly presented in front of my eyes, and these murals are smooth and delicate, and the colors are refined.
Look carefully at the Buddha's clothes, you can still see the elegant corners of the cassock still retain different shades of blue and some curly cloud patterns.
The strong men standing on both sides are very clear in their clothing texture, and you can recognize the various details on the armor at a glance.

Wuwei Travel Guide.
Tianzhu, the name is a combination of the first characters of Tiangong Temple and Zhugong Temple, so they are put together. Tiangong Temple is the largest temple we have seen these days. It is worthy of the name of the Little Potala Palace. The whole temple is magnificent. These days, we have seen many ancient buildings damaged by the 1927 earthquake. Only it has never suffered from natural and man-made disasters, which is very lucky.
The opposite layers of mountains are like lotus flowers, and the mountains behind them have legends that are "naturally born" Buddha statues... Here, listening to these legendary stories, I even don't want to doubt its authenticity-one such place, without some myths, I feel unreal.
Zhugong Temple is another huge contrast: there is only a white tower and a main hall here, and there are not many photos that can be taken; I met a monk and found out in the conversation that Zhugong Temple had been to Songshan Ancient City-on the way to Zhugong Temple, we passed by Songshan Ancient City Site, adhering to the famous saying "come all the way" and went around by coincidence, although I couldn't find the address of the temple, but I took the ancient city wall and wind power machine
There really is a place where you can forget all your worries!
Finally came to check in! I feel like my body and mind have been healed~ I took advantage of the heat to organize this experience guide, and the babies who are going to remember to collect it!

Gansu Wuwei Museum: A feast of history and art.
Gansu Wuwei Museum: A feast of history and art

Wuwei Museum not only has a rich collection, but also has distinctive exhibitions. "Hexi Metropolis, Hometown of Heavenly Horses-Wuwei Historical Relics Exhibition" makes people appreciate the grand history of Wuwei for thousands of years and feel the city's toughness and diversity; "Tianti Charm, Liangzhou Buddha Light-Tianti Mountain Grottoes Special Exhibition" is close to the treasures of Buddhist art, Experience the unique charm of Liangzhou Buddha Light.
Here, you can admire the national treasure "Wangzhang Decree Order Booklet" up close, and listen to the ancient echoes of the Western Han Dynasty's respect for the elderly and the elderly; you can stare at the copper horse and feel its "horse stepping on the swallow" The posture and strength. After visiting, come to a Wangzhang Wen Chuang popsicle, and enjoy the beauty of cultural relics. The mouth and abdomen can't be idle.
Gansu Province, Wuwei City | Leitai Han Tombs | A shining pearl in the depths of time.
🍀 Leitai Han Tombs are located in the north section of Zhongguan Road, Liangzhou District, Wuwei City, Gansu Province. It is a world-renowned treasure and the birthplace of "Horse Treading on a Flying Swallow," the symbol of Chinese tourism.
🍀 Historical evolution: Leitai was built by Zhang Mao, King of Former Liang, as Lingjun Terrace. In the fourth year of Taixing in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, another Leitai was built here to worship the god of thunder. On the terrace, there are 10 ancient buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties, including the Temple of Lei Zu and the Temple of Sanxing Doumu. The buildings are magnificent and grand. The surrounding area is filled with ancient trees and shimmering lakes.
🍀 Main attractions:
❇️ Main Hall and Side Hall: The main hall is mainly used to house the spirit tablet of the deceased, and it is the place where the soul of the deceased normally lives. The attendants serve the spirit tablet as if it were a living person. The side hall is an auxiliary building of the main hall, mainly used to worship the spirit of the deceased when it comes here to play.
❇️ Horse Treading on a Flying Swallow: The bronze galloping horse is also known as "Ma Chao Longque." It is green-bronze in color, 34.5 cm high, 45 cm long, and weighs 7.15 kg. The horse is depicted in a galloping posture, with three legs in the air, head held high, and tail raised. Under its right hind leg, it tramples on a "wind god bird" dragon sparrow, which is spreading its wings and flying back, looking back in surprise. This design breaks away from the traditional image of the heavenly horse, while still conforming to the principles of mechanical balance. It contains rich cultural connotations of the heavenly horse, and its casting technique is exquisite. It is a masterpiece of bronze art.
❇️ Han Dynasty Ancient Well: The ancient well is located in the southeast corner of Leitai, 2 meters from the entrance of the tomb passage. It runs through the entire rammed earth layer and is adjacent to the tomb passage, extending all the way into the ancient tomb. The well is 12.8 meters deep and is built with typical Han Dynasty thin bricks. The bottom is laid in a "human character" shape, which is rare in Chinese archaeology. According to research, this ancient well gradually dried up in the mid-1990s.
❇️ Leitai Lake: Leitai Lake, located next to Leitai, has naturally revived after being dry for over 20 years. The spring water gurgles, the waves shimmer, and the stream flows gently. The surrounding area is covered with green grass, and willows and poplars sway in the breeze. The creation of heaven and earth, combined with the hard work of the people of Wuwei, has made Leitai, the birthplace of the bronze galloping horse, a place where old and new appearances coexist, attracting a large number of Chinese and foreign scholars and tourists.
🚗 Parking lot: There is a large parking lot next to the scenic spot. I forgot whether it was charged, but it definitely wasn't expensive.
🎫 Tickets: Available at the ticket window or online. Adult ticket: RMB 45/person

China Tourism Logo - Flying Horse of Gansu.
Leitai Han Tomb, located at No. 272, Beiguan Middle Road, Liangzhou District, Wuwei City, Gansu Province, was built in the late Eastern Han Dynasty and is famous for the national treasure-level cultural relic Flying Horse of Gansu. In October 1983, the "Flying Horse of Gansu" was designated as the China Tourism Logo by the National Tourism Administration; in 1985, Wuwei City designated the "Flying Horse of Gansu" as the city emblem symbolizing Wuwei's soaring; in 1986, it was designated as a national treasure-level cultural relic.
Gansu's Fourth City: A Historical Witness to Tibet's Administrative Affiliation with the Central Government
Outside Liangzhou City, at Huahua Temple (now Baita Temple), an important meeting regarding Tibet's submission to Mongolia was held. The participants were Köten (a prince of the Mongol Empire and commander of the Western Expedition) and Sakya Pandita (the religious leader of the Sakya sect of Tibetan Buddhism). After the Liangzhou talks, Sakya Pandita issued the famous 'Letter to the Tibetans' to various Tibetan factions. This alliance, which took place over seven hundred years ago in the Hexi Corridor, holds a very special significance in Chinese history. It not only ended over four hundred years of fragmentation in Tibet but also laid a solid foundation for the incorporation of the Tibetan Plateau into the Yuan Dynasty's territory.
It's amazing to move the entire grotto into the exhibition hall, this first-class museum is extraordinary
Wuwei Museum is a national first-class museum with a very high status in Gansu, and its collection of cultural relics is second only to Gansu Provincial Museum and Gansu Bamboo Slips Museum. When traveling to Gansu, experiencing the local history and culture, especially the history and culture of the Hexi Corridor of the ancient Silk Road, you must visit Wuwei Museum.
【Special Recommendation】
In addition to the permanent exhibition on the historical development of Wuwei, Wuwei Museum especially recommends the special exhibition - The Charm of Tianti Mountain Grottoes - Special Exhibition of Tianti Mountain Grottoes.
The special exhibition of Tianti Mountain Grottoes is located in the west exhibition hall on the third floor, displaying 81 cultural relics cleaned, relocated, and restored from Tianti Mountain Grottoes. A batch of precious cultural relics such as the Northern Liang Stone Pagoda, murals, and colored sculptures, which are exhibited for the first time, allow visitors to experience the charm of the grottoes firsthand.
The special exhibition of Tianti Mountain Grottoes is also one of the permanent exhibitions of Wuwei Museum, so don't miss it when you visit the museum.
【Exhibition Features】
It makes up for the regret that a large number of Tianti Mountain Grottoes were submerged due to the construction of a reservoir. In the 1950s, a large number of grottoes were submerged near Tianti Mountain Grottoes due to the need to build a reservoir. The statues, paintings, and murals in the grottoes were cut and sent to cultural relic management agencies for preservation.
Now only the Great Buddha Grottoes excavated in the Tang Dynasty remain in Tianti Mountain Grottoes for visitors to visit.
Nowadays, to fully understand the history and culture of Tianti Mountain Grottoes, you can only visit the special exhibition of Tianti Mountain Grottoes in Wuwei Museum, where a large number of murals and colored sculptures are presented in the exhibition hall. The exhibition hall also uses modern means to restore part of the grottoes and the Great Buddha Grottoes of the Tang Dynasty, so visitors who cannot visit Tianti Mountain Grottoes in person can see the grandeur of the Great Buddha in the museum.
【Exhibition Hall Location】
Located on the third floor of the museum.
Special Tips:
1. After going up the stairs, you will be at the exit of the exhibition hall. Remember to go around the corridor to the entrance on the right-hand side and then enter to visit in order.
2. The end of the special exhibition tells about the cultural relic protection work of Tianti Mountain Grottoes and the restoration and preservation methods of the grotto murals, which is very detailed. There are many first-hand materials on display, so friends interested in archaeology can learn more about it.
🚗
【Tips】
1. Wuwei Museum is closed every Monday. Currently, there are not many visitors, so there is no need to make a reservation in advance. You can enter the museum with your ID card on-site registration.
2. Wuwei Museum is not far from historical sites such as Wuwei Confucian Temple and Kumarajiva Temple, which can be visited together in one day.
3. Wuwei Museum is adjacent to Wuwei Library, so friends interested in cultural and museum venues can visit together.
Kumarajiva Temple, experience the most prosperous incense on the Silk Road
The ancient Silk Road was a route for cultural and commercial exchanges between the East and the West, as well as a path for diplomatic interactions between countries, and a route for religious exchanges and dissemination. Many cities in Gansu Province have large-scale and long-standing temples, among which the Kumarajiva Temple in Wuwei is very famous.
【Scenic Area Introduction】
Kumarajiva Temple was first built during the Later Liang period. The pagoda and temple were greatly expanded during the Tang Dynasty, and were repaired during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It was built to commemorate the Western Region monk Kumarajiva for his contributions in promoting Buddhism and translating scriptures. It has a history of more than 1600 years and is a precious relic for studying the culture of the Five Liang, Chinese Buddhism, and Western Region Buddhism.
In 1927, a magnitude 8 earthquake struck Wuwei, damaging many historical sites, and the Kumarajiva Temple was not spared, with only half of the ancient pagoda remaining. In 1934, the government rebuilt the Kumarajiva Temple on the original site.

The only temple in the world named after Kumarajiva
Kumarajiva Temple was built to commemorate the Western Regions' eminent monk Kumarajiva for his contributions to promoting Buddhism and translating scriptures. It is the only temple in the world named after Kumarajiva. Located on North Street, Wuwei City, Gansu Province, China, it is where the great Chinese Buddhist scripture translator Kumarajiva stayed for nearly 17 years.
Kumarajiva Temple was first built during the Later Liang period. In 413 AD, Kumarajiva passed away in Chang'an at the age of 70. After his cremation, it was found that only his tongue remained intact. Following his last wishes, his disciples brought his tongue relic back to Wuwei's Kumarajiva Temple to build a pagoda for worship. With a history of over 1600 years, it is a precious relic for studying the culture of the Five Liang, Chinese Buddhism, and Western Regions Buddhism.
During the flourishing Tang Dynasty, the Rosh Temple, located in the bustling area of Liangzhou, became a place where Western Regions envoys and monks from various countries gathered and exchanged ideas along the Silk Road. It made significant contributions to the exchange of religious culture and thoughts between China and the West, with far-reaching significance.
Today, Kumarajiva Temple includes structures such as the Rosh Temple Pagoda, Mahavira Hall, Guanyin Hall, Great Sutra Hall, Kumarajiva Memorial Hall, Kumarajiva Library, Buddhist Relics Exhibition Room, Buddhist Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition Room, Guest Hall, and Yunshui Hall.

If you ask locals about fun places in Wuwei, they will generally recommend the Confucian Temple. This is because the Wuwei Confucian Temple is the largest and best-preserved Confucian Temple in the Hexi Corridor, second only to the Confucian Temples in Qufu and Jianshui in terms of scale.
The most notable feature is the more than forty plaques in the Guiji Hall of Wenchang Palace. Spanning from the Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China, these plaques reflect the flourishing spread of Confucian culture in the Hexi Corridor over 240 years. Gansu Travel | Taking the high-speed train to Wuwei, the 'Flying Horse Treading on a Swallow' started its journey to the world from here
Wuwei is a must-visit for the Leitai Han Tombs, the birthplace of the 'Flying Horse Treading on a Swallow'.
hi, I am Guo Sulan
The Lan-Zhang high-speed train section to Wuwei is set to open in June, and it takes less than an hour to get there by high-speed train, which is incredibly convenient. It's possible to travel from Lanzhou to Wuwei and back in one day, and this is an opportunity not to be missed.
Leitai is located in the Liangzhou District of Wuwei, Gansu. It is an earthen platform that is 8.5 meters high, 108 meters long from north to south, and 60 meters wide from east to west. On top of Leitai is the 'Leitai Temple', which was originally built during the Ming Dynasty. Below it is the 'Leitai Han Tombs' from the late Eastern Han Dynasty, where more than 200 precious cultural relics were unearthed, including 99 exquisitely cast bronze chariot and horse figurines. The most outstanding artifact is a bronze galloping horse, later named 'Flying Horse Treading on a Swallow' by Guo Moruo, who accompanied foreign leaders to visit the Gansu Provincial Museum.
The bronze galloping horse 'Flying Horse Treading on a Swallow' has been designated as the 'Symbol of China Tourism' by the National Tourism Administration, and it is a source of pride for the people of Wuwei and Gansu.
Additionally, you can also visit the Han and Tang Dynasties' Heavenly Horse City, watch the musical drama 'Heavenly Horse's Journey' based on the figure Huo Qubing, and be sure to try the Wuwei pot cuisine.
Explore the unearthed sites of China's tourism symbols
"Galloping Horse Treading on a Flying Swallow", also known as "Horse that Outruns the Swallow" or "Horse Surpassing the Sparrowhawk", is a bronze statue that vividly captures the essence of a heavenly steed soaring through the skies. It is a fine cultural relic unearthed in the late 1960s from the Leitai Han Dynasty tombs in Wuwei City, Gansu Province. It was discovered by local farmers while digging air-raid shelters beside Leitai during the "deep digging" era of 1969 and was later identified by experts as a brick and stone tomb from the late Eastern Han Dynasty. In 1983, the Galloping Horse was designated as the symbol of China's tourism; in 1996, it was appraised as a national treasure by a panel of experts from the State Administration of Cultural Heritage; and in 2002, it was included in the first batch of precious cultural relics banned from being exhibited abroad by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage.
There are currently three unsolved mysteries regarding the Leitai Han tombs. The first is that despite the tomb's grand chamber architecture and numerous precious burial objects, only the surname Zhang is known for the tomb owner, with the owner's identity remaining a mystery. The second is the appearance of the character "喜喜" (double happiness) on the south wall of the tomb chamber, composed of black and white bricks. This character, supposedly created by Wang Anshi of the Song Dynasty in a drunken state, raises the question of whether its presence in this tomb chamber is a mere coincidence or if the character already existed at the time. The third mystery is that experts have tested the bricks from the tomb chamber and well for pressure resistance and corrosion resistance, finding that they can withstand a pressure of 366 to 374 kilograms per square centimeter, whereas modern bricks can only withstand 150 to 200 kilograms per square centimeter. The method of preparing and firing these bricks has not yet been clarified by the experts.

The ancient city of Liangzhou, the story behind "Ma Chao Long Que"
As the curtain rises at the Xiliang Grand Theatre, amidst the ancient and crisp sounds of music, a mysterious and heavy armored gate slowly opens, and a deep and resonant call comes from afar, as if hiding a thousand years of secrets. The large-scale immersive situational stage drama "Tianma Xing" features "Junli" (symbolizing the celestial horse) and "Linluan" (symbolizing the dragon sparrow) as the male and female protagonists, born in the Han army camp known as "Tian Sheng Xiang Rui". Set against the historical backdrop of the Han Dynasty's heyday, with Huo Qubing's great defeat of the Xiongnu and Zhang Qian's opening up of the Western Regions, the drama uses powerful visual effects and scenes to bring the thousand-year-old historical story to life. It fully showcases the spirit of the "Tianma" of Wuwei and promotes the culture of the "Tianma".
