Our route through Namibia covered Windhoek, Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, and the Sossusvlei desert. Traveling independently by car was convenient, even though some sections of the road were quite challenging. 🚘 Windhoek: Car Rental and Preparation We flew into Namibia’s capital, Windhoek. Russian citizens don’t need a visa, but you’ll need a pen on the plane to fill out the arrival card. Our first task was buying a local SIM card. Roaming is unreliable, so local service is essential. A 14-day plan with 10 GB of data and 30 minutes of calls cost about $25. Next, we exchanged money. You can get Namibian dollars at the airport, but South African Rand is accepted throughout the country. We rented our car from Namibia2go. It’s best to book in advance with a credit card. A big plus for this company is their new fleet and the fact that they don’t require a deposit. When we picked up the car, they gave us a detailed demonstration on how to change a tire, check tire pressure, and inspect key engine components. They also provided great advice on choosing the right car and navigating our route. 🌊 Windhoek to Walvis Bay It’s about a 5-hour drive to Walvis Bay. The roads on this stretch are good, but don't speed—there are speed cameras and police patrols. Gas stations and rest stops are few and far between, mostly located in towns, so it’s best to stock up on food and water in advance. In Walvis Bay, we stayed at a small hotel for $30 a night. The city is low-rise, and the cold ocean current makes it significantly cooler than Windhoek. For dinner, we went to Godenfang, one of the oldest restaurants in town. A 350g beef steak cost about $12.40. We also picked up a pizza for breakfast and stopped by a large SPAR supermarket. 🏜 Sandwich Harbour The next day, we took an excursion to Sandwich Harbour. We booked it through Trip.com for roughly $136 per person. The tour starts at a lake filled with flamingos and a pink lake, then passes through salt works. Namibia is a major Atlantic salt producer, and you can see characteristic salt mounds all along the coast. On the way to Sandwich Harbour, you’ll encounter flamingos, pelicans, jackals, fur seals, and thousands of cormorants. Driving there yourself is risky: there are practically no roads, and only 4WD vehicles with deflated tires can navigate the shore during low tide. A guided tour is the best option. In the harbor itself, we managed to see whales, orcas, and dolphins. This was followed by a 4WD trip through the dunes and a stop at a popular viewpoint for photos. ⛵️ Swakopmund After the tour, we headed to Swakopmund—the drive takes about 30 minutes. We stayed in a two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment for $80 a night. In the evening, we walked through town to the waterfront and lighthouse, then had dinner at a restaurant. 🛖 Swakopmund to Sossusvlei The next leg of the journey was the most difficult. The drive to the Sossusvlei area took about 5 hours, with a significant portion on gravel roads. Once we left the coast, the temperature rose to about +34°C (93°F). There are almost no gas stations, shops, or rest stops, so make sure your tank is full and you have plenty of water. We stayed at We Kebi Safari Lodge. The room cost $168, which included dinner. The lodge is located in the middle of the desert and is fascinating beyond just the accommodations. Wild animals frequently appear on the grounds: we saw antelopes, wildebeest, and rhinos. The rhinos were literally just a few meters away, so it's important not to approach them or make sudden movements. 🔥 Sossusvlei and Deadvlei We set off for Sossusvlei National Park at dawn. The hotel prepared a packed breakfast for us. After about an hour on gravel roads, the asphalt begins. Interestingly, the speed limit here is 60 km/h, even though it's 100 km/h on some gravel roads. However, rental companies recommend staying below 80 km/h on gravel due to animals that might run onto the road. The park entry fee for two people and a car was $21.50. We first stopped at Dune 45, climbed up, and took photos. Then we drove to the 2x4 parking area, paid for a shuttle, and headed to the 4x4 parking lot. From there, it's about a 1.5 km walk one way to Deadvlei. We decided to skip the climb up the famous Big Daddy dune, as it requires extra time and physical effort. Deadvlei is a dried-up salt and clay pan with ancient fossilized acacia trees over 900 years old. The white floor, red dunes, and dark tree trunks create one of Namibia’s most iconic landscapes. 🗺 Returning to Windhoek After Deadvlei, we began the drive back to Windhoek to return the car by 5:00 PM. We stopped again at Solitaire along the way—it has a gas station, free restrooms, a bakery, and a themed photo area. We saw antelopes several times on the road, including the Oryx—Namibia’s national symbol. They can suddenly dart onto the road, so definitely don't speed through desert sections. Another challenge was the mountain pass with steep grades, sharp turns, and narrow roads. We drove through it carefully without any issues. The tour ran NAD 1,450 per person, leaving at 8:30 am, returning 2 pm. You drive south along the Walvis Bay lagoon (flamingos, pelicans), then hit the dune belt where the Atlantic meets the Namib. The “drive” is really a timed dash: the guide radios ahead, checks the tide table, and floors it across a 200 m beach section between dune wall and surf—miss the window and you wait two hours. At Sandwich Harbour lagoon itself, a hidden freshwater-seep marsh sits behind the first dune row, full of waders. I wore sandals and regretted it; the dune sand at 11 am was 48°C on the surface, boots better. Park entry is covered in the tour but note Dorob NP has a daily conservation fee (NAD 80/vehicle) if you self-drive. Carry NAD cash for the parking attendants at Walvis Bay lagoon and tip the guide in cash. Mistake I saw others make: standing on the wet sand undercut by waves for a photo—one French guy got soaked to the waist. During the two-hour, twenty-minute flight, we were served a full hot meal, beautifully garnished with microgreens and pastries, and were offered wine, spirits, juices, and water. But what surprised me most was the café au lait – for the first time in all my flights, it was truly delicious, and I didn't want to leave it half-finished. Walvis Bay Airport turned out to be quite small. We picked up a rental car from AVIS there. A standard Visa debit card was accepted, but the employee warned us that the deposit would be returned in about a month – credit cards are faster. Almost all roads in Namibia are gravel or sand, so we rented a Toyota Urban Cruiser XR. A two-day rental cost around 15,000 rubles (plus a deposit), and it quickly became clear why they take such care in choosing a car. Our first stop was Lagoon View Point, where pink flamingos gracefully stood amidst the shallow waters. We then headed to Pink Salt Lake. Along the way, we encountered enormous, snow-white mountains of salt, like snowdrifts in the middle of the African desert. The landscapes were so unusual that at times it seemed as if we'd landed on another planet. We also really wanted to visit Pelican Point, home to thousands of seals and a multitude of birds. But here, our first disappointment awaited us. Despite Google Maps' reliable route planning, the final kilometers were covered in deep sand. Even owners of larger SUVs turned around rather than risk getting stuck. After buying groceries at Checkers, we decided not to waste time and headed to the famous dunes late at night. And that's where the real adventure began. Most of the road was gravel. Then a switchback road appeared, and everything became completely dark, with visibility dramatically deteriorating. The car climbed steeply, then plunged sharply downward. Hares, owls, and even foxes suddenly appeared in the headlights. There were no gas stations along the road. Luckily, the full tank we'd been given when we rented the car barely lasted until we reached the national park. Right at the entrance, we were met by the only Shell gas station for many kilometers, a small cafe, and a campsite. We knew the gates opened at dawn, so we decided to wait right at the entrance. And it turned out to be one of the most beautiful moments of the entire trip. An incredible starry sky stretched over the desert. It seemed there were dozens of times more stars here than anywhere else. The Milky Way was clearly visible to the naked eye, and everything was absolutely silent. But in the morning, an unexpected surprise awaited us. National park staff informed us that tourists staying overnight outside the park would be allowed in at 7:30 AM instead of the usual 6:30 AM. However, if you're camping inside the park, there's no such restriction—you can visit the dunes at any time. The entrance fee was about 3,000 rubles for two, and you pay for the ticket upon exiting. Once we finally got inside, the road itself turned into a safari. Antelopes, ostriches, and local goats with their unusual tufted tails roamed everywhere. We stopped at the first tall dune, climbed up, and realized why photographers from all over the world flock here. Enormous red sand waves stretched to the horizon, and the views were simply fantastic. Our next destination was the famous Big Daddy—one of the tallest dunes in the world. But just a few kilometers before it, we were stopped by a park employee. It turned out that further on, a stretch of very deep sand began, accessible only to all-terrain vehicles. Our SUV could easily get stuck. Tickets for special SUV shuttles were already being sold nearby. The ride cost about 1,000 rubles per person. We decided we'd seen enough, took lots of photos, and headed back. But the return trip was also one of the most vivid experiences. During the day, we revealed what had been hidden in the darkness at night: incredible canyons, winding mountain passes, giant cacti, and rocks shimmering with dozens of shades—pink, lilac, orange, green, and gray. Each new turn in the road looked like a separate postcard. We returned to Walvis Bay in the evening. It was already dark, and we stopped in a parking lot near one of the buildings to choose a hotel in peace. About fifteen minutes later, I noticed a man with a machine gun and a covered face slowly walking toward our car. For a few seconds, my heart literally stopped. Coming closer, the man calmly asked, "Are you all right?" Only then did I realize he was just a security guard. We replied that everything was fine, he nodded, and left, leaving us laughing for a long time about how we'd managed to create an entire action movie for ourselves. The next morning, a flight back to Cape Town awaited us. In two days, Namibia had shown us almost everything: endless desert, pink lakes, flocks of flamingos, a starry sky devoid of a single light from civilization, wild animals right off the road, and landscapes that are difficult to describe in words. Walvis Bay is the pearl of the Atlantic coast in the Namib Desert. A place where endless giant dunes meet the ocean. An ideal starting point for exploring Namibia. Arriving in the town, you're greeted by wide, deserted streets, beautiful, uniform houses, and friendly people. The town has a large shopping center, Dunas Mall, where you can buy everything you need (grocery, pharmacy, clothing, and shoes). Getting around the town is easy by taxi; locals use the app yango (the local Yandex app). A taxi from the airport to the city is reasonably priced at 200-250 ZAR. Within the city, it's 35-45 ZAR. For dinner, we chose the Flamingo Villas Restaurant at the hotel. Large portions, fresh oysters, and a large wine list.
