2024 Vientiane Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in November)
Vientiane, the capital of Laos, is the antithesis of a bustling capital like London. In fact, it feels more like a welcoming village, nestled in a bend of the Mekong River, Vientiane is dotted with temples and quirky, accessible attractions like the Buddha Park featuring surreal statues of the Buddha and the Monk Chat, a monthly opportunity to hang out with, you guessed it, monks. The major monument in town is Patuxai, and local food, you'll want to head to the night market. Now that Vientiane is not a tourist city, but it still offers visitors the chance to experience the closest thing Laos has urban living. Recently the city has begun to grow and develop, but that has fortunately resulted more in different restaurants, nice bars to drink Beerlao (the local brew), and better hotels than in ostentatious resorts or high rises.
Today's Weather
Partly cloudy 19-30℃

Laos 3-day tour, the most comfortable place in Laos.
Vientiane 3-day tour, the most comfortable place in Laos || 7.17-7.21
I personally think Vientiane is the most comfortable place to stay in Laos. It's delicious and fun, and city walks are comfortable. You don't have to worry about rain, and there's a temple every few minutes, so you can always find shelter. In Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng, there's not much to eat, and every day is very bland. After coming to Vientiane, I finally feel alive.
Vang Vieng to Vientiane transportation: minivan, 2 hours, 13w, direct to airport or city.
Accommodation: SYRI Guesthouse, 10w per night, large space, large wardrobe, very comfortable.
Currency exchange:
The cheapest place in the city is the Agricultural Promotion Bank (July 20) at 1:3559.
Day 1 City Walk (3pm-7:30pm, 4.5h)
Sport Guesthouse Cafe (lunch, first meal in Vientiane, finally had a delicious meal in Laos, I was so moved I cried) -- Lao National Cultural Hall -- Nam Phou Fountain -- Presidential Palace (Chairman's Office) -- That Dam Stupa (Black Tower) -- American Center Vientiane (graffiti wall) -- Wat Sisaket (3w) -- Ho Phrakeo Museum (3w) -- Vientiane Library (library open to the public) -- Wat That Phoun (free, the temple is very large, worth visiting) -- Patuxay - Victory Monument (Arc de Triomphe 3w) -- Prime Minister Office -- King Anouvong Statue -- Vientiane Night Market (Mekong Night Market, mainly selling clothes, check in at the nearby Mixue, ice cream is generally more expensive than in China) -- Wat Ong Teu -- Wat Haysoke -- Night market with food (very, very many kinds of snacks and juices!!) -- Ban Anou Night Market (fewer stalls, mainly barbecue and fast food)
Day 2: (10am-3pm)
PVO Vietnamese Food -- Buddha Park -- A Je Kitchen -- D-Mart
10:00am: PVO for brunch, lots of variety, baguettes are delicious, affordable, lots of people, pack a sandwich after eating, eat while playing.
11:00am: Take bus 14 from CBS (Central Bus Station) to Xiangkun Temple, also known as Buddha Park (entrance fee 4w), 1.8w, every half hour, passing the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge. Back to the city around 3pm.
After a good rest, have dinner at A Je Kitchen's pork leg rice, next to Night market with food and D-Mart.
Day 3: City Walk (temple tour)
Wat Kao Nhot -- Wat Phiavat -- Vientiane City Pillar (Vientiane City Pillar) -- Wat Si Muang (very lively, beautiful main hall) -- Wat That Khao (Reclining Buddha) -- Wat Phapho -- Wat Phaxay -- Wat Beungkhanyong ---- Rimping Supermarket (super fun to shop) -- Wat Sisangvone -- Wat That Luang Tai (Tower of Luang Tai Temple) -- That Luang Museum (Tower of Luang Temple, 3w) -- King Setthathirath Statue
ps: Highly recommend PVO Vietnamese Food, I ate there every day in Vientiane, ordered different dishes, all delicious.

VIBING IN THE MORNING MARKET
#markets
They say, if you want to feel how the locals live their daily life, go and visit the market.
The morning market in Vientiane was pretty simple and laid-back, just a small spot tucked between some houses.
It had all the usual fresh produce you'd find across Southeast Asia, the vegetables you would recognize right away for instance, the bird eye chillis which is one of the main ingredients in local cuisine.
They even had frogs for sale which was kind of interesting but we didnt get to snap any pictures.

Step out of Laos & into France at Kaogee Le Triomphe
#myhiddengems
Kaogee Le Triomphe is charming modern cafe offering a Parisian vibe pretty near to Patuxai….
It was as if we stepped out of the blistering humidity of Lao PDR into a cool Parisian cafe which serve pretty and delicious and fresh french pastries…..
I indulged in their strawberry flat croissant and an iced caramel latte, while my friends ordered an affogato and chocolate mousse cake which came beautifully presented and even a beer
Kaogee’s coffee is grown and harvested in Paksong and transported to Vientiane and served so that diners can taste a bit of Laos with the experience of Europe!!!

The Great Sacred Stupa of Lao PDR
#100waysoftravel
Pha That Luang Stupa is one of the must visit places in Vientiane which is located right in the center of Vientiane…
This breathtaking structure, also known as the Great Sacred Stupa, is tall and considered a symbol of national pride and cultural heritage.
Afterall, the original Pha That Luang Stupa was believed to have been built by the Indian Emperor Ashoka, who sent missionaries to spread Buddhism across Southeast Asia.
Besides, it is also said that the stupa contains a relic of the Buddha, thus making it an important pilgrimage site for Buddhist devotees.

Ho Phra Keo Museum original home of the Emerald Buddha
#myhiddengems
Ho Phra Keo temple was built in 1565 when King Setthathirath moved Laos’s capital from Luang Prabang to Vientiane. Ho Phra Kaew temple functioned as a personal chapel for Laos Royals and accommodated the famous Emerald Buddha statue, an important symbol of Buddhism.
The stairways to the temple’s entrances carry a mythological Naga snake sculptured in stone
After that the Siamese King, a Buddhist, remade an identical statue and returned it to Laos, to be replaced where the statue was taken. Through the war years, Wat Phra Kaew was destroyed and restored many times, now it is no longer used for Buddhist worship, it’s turned into a museum preserving precious artifacts such as Buddha statues, a gilded throne for the Emerald Buddha, inscribed Khmer stone steles, some wood sculptures or inscriptions carved in stone
There is a large stone jar in the garden, which actually comes from Laos’ mysterious Plain of Jars.
The oldest Temple in Vientiane with a sacrifice….
#myhiddengems
Wat Si Muang is one of the oldest and best-known temples here, most popular among locals.
In the past, Wat Si Muang was once associated with royal rituals, sometimes hosting coronation ceremonies. The popular myth claims that it was named after a local pregnant woman, Si, who sacrificed her own life to call upon an ancient guardian spirit to protect the city from an oncoming flood.
The temple itself houses a copy of the Emerald Buddha statue and a sacred stone pillar called the Lák Méuang, an ancient monument believed to enshrine the guardian spirit of the city, as well as several mini-shrines throughout the premises, some gorgeously kitsch. Right outside the temple also stands an imposing statue of King Sisavangvong, the first ruler of the Kingdom of Laos.

Let's have a relaxing meal in Muang Phueng.
This post shares a chill restaurant spot in Muang Phueng.
This restaurant is located in Suputtara Raft House, a popular accommodation among Thai tourists. If you can't book a stay here or are not staying here, you can still dine at the restaurant. The kitchen opens from 4 PM onwards. The food is reasonably priced, and the view is quite nice.

Landmark Vientiane Life Center
This hotel was built relatively recently. It is very convenient and well-located, being very close to Vientiane Center and Paxon Mall. Major tourist attractions and excellent restaurants are not far away. The rooms with great views are well-equipped with necessary amenities, and there is a well-maintained swimming pool and fitness center for relaxation. Although the breakfast menu is simple, it was delicious, and the staff were friendly and accommodating, making us feel at ease. Please note that a deposit is required at check-in, so be sure to have cash ready.
