Sulamani Temple: The Crowning Jewel of Bagan
#springitinerary
Nestled in the heart of Bagan's archaeological zone, the Sulamani Temple stands as a testament to Myanmar's rich cultural and architectural heritage. Built in 1183 by King Narapatisithu, this majestic structure is renowned for its intricate design, historical significance, and spiritual ambience.
🏯 Architectural Splendor
Sulamani Temple is a two-story edifice featuring a square layout. The ground floor is expansive, topped with three receding terraces, while the smaller upper level boasts four terraces. Each corner of these terraces is adorned with smaller stupas, adding to the temple's grandeur. Crowning the structure is a shikhara, a North Indian-style tower, surmounted by an hti, an umbrella-shaped spire common in Burmese temples.
The temple's design is symmetrical, with entrance porches on all four sides. The eastern porch, serving as the main entrance, extends further out, inviting visitors into its sacred halls.
🎨 Artistic Mastery
Inside, the temple walls are adorned with frescoes and murals spanning from the 12th to the 19th centuries. These artworks depict scenes from the life of the Buddha, various mythological creatures like dragons and Naga serpents, and glimpses into the daily life of 18th-century Bagan residents.
The base and terraces feature glazed terracotta plaques illustrating the Jataka tales—stories of the Buddha's previous lives—serving both decorative and educational purposes.
🕰️ Historical Significance
According to legend, King Narapatisithu discovered a small ruby at the site, inspiring the temple's name, Sulamani, meaning "Crowning Jewel" or "Small Ruby"
Over the centuries, the temple has undergone several restorations. Notably, after the 1975 earthquake, significant repairs were made, and further renovations occurred in the 1990s to preserve its structural integrity and artistic treasures .
