National Palace of Pena Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jul)
PLS visit during golden hour 🌅😍🇵🇹
#timetotravel
We visited in the late afternoon and managed to catch the golden hour, it was so magical!! 🌅
We took the train from Lisbon to Sintra and called an uber to drive up to the National Palace of Peña, from what I recalled, ubers in Portugal were not very expensive.
There is an entrance fee of around $120 HKD but it was so worth it to visit. The red and yellow exterior of the palace is stunning 😍 and this makes the palace unique from other palaces I have seen!!
The National Palace of Peña is situated at the top of the peak, therefore it offers a panoramic view of Sintra which is a plus!!

Checkinaway (@checkinawayblog) Must Visit Lisbon 🇵🇹 Pena Palace
We arrived at the Park/garden at 9:20AM on Sunday (the gardens open at 9AM) There was already a line of people buying tickets and a line of people entering the park. Although the line to get into the park was very quick, since security just needed to scan our tickets.
📍Do yourself a favor buy your tickets online, you don't need to choose a date when you are just visiting the park and outer terraces.
📍No need to buy a shuttle bus ticket, the line is longer than the walk up itself. It's a pretty easy up hill walk, that takes about 10-15 minutes.
📍It's a bit tricky to buy tickets for the garden & outer terraces online. But It is worth your money and there is no wait to walk around the outer terraces!
📍I would highly recommend coming to the gardens when they open at 9AM before the line of people starts. When we were leaving the castle terraces, the line was super long around 10:15AM
After visiting the castle terraces, we walked around the garden. There are some nice viewpoints like Elizabeth's hights. We went to the farm area, but we didn't see any animals which was disappointing.
If you follow these tips you will also have a nice trip like we did.
Pena Palace, a fairytale palace in Sintra
#newyearadventure
The Park and National Palace of Pena in Sintra is one of the most beautiful palaces in Europe.
The palace was built on top of Serra de Sintra on the site of a former monastery built in the 16th century. In 1838 the monastery was acquired by King Fernando II. He was the main driving force behind the construction of Pena Palace by refurbishing the old buildings and constructing a new wing. The palace served as a summer palace for the royal family.
Be prepared to send at least 2 hours there as the palace is huge and if you have time you should also spend some time at the beautiful park around the palace. Buy your tickets online to save 5% and save time queuing at the gate.

Day trip to Sintra and Cabo da Roca
#newyearadventure
Sintra is a UNESCO world heritage site in Portugal famed for its historic palaces and castles. It is about 50 minutes from Lisbon by train so you can easily make a day trip to Sintra while you're in Lisbon.
We visited Pena Palace, a fairytale palace built in 19th century, and Quinta da Regaleira, a neo-gothic mansion with the iconic initiation well. We had lunch in Sintra town centre and thereafter travelled to Cabo da Roca - the westernmost point of mainland Europe.
It may be cheaper to go from one location to another by Uber or other ride hiring platforms instead of hiring tour guides touting outside Sintra train station. The tour guide we hired charged us 35 euros per pax by fetching us from point A to point B.

Quinta da Regaleira, Sintra 💝
Me and my family went to Quinta da Regaleira in Sintra, Portugal! We spent a beautiful morning going trough the park where you can see different sculptures, towers, etc! Truly romantic and outstanding! A must if you visit Sintra!
The elegant Quinta da Regaleira estate in Sintra
📍Attraction address: Quinta da Regaleira is located in Sintra
🚗Access to the attraction: Take bus 435 to get there, and you can buy a bus ticket for 13.5 euros in Sintra to take buses 434 and 435 for the whole day.
👍️Must-visit attractions: Quinta da Regaleira has been listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The estate includes the romantic Regaleira Palace, the Regaleira Chapel, and a luxurious park with lakes, caves, wells, benches, fountains, and a multitude of exquisite buildings. This building is also known as 'The Palace of Monteiro the Millionaire', named after the nickname of its first owner, who was a tobacco merchant and had a smoking room inside, furnished with a chair resembling a dragon throne. The estate has a very three-dimensional garden with unexpected ingenuity. Quinta da Regaleira is a quirky attraction, where all the large and small buildings have pure white, intricately carved facades, giving a delicate yet eerie feeling.
🇵🇹 Quinta da Regaleira, the most Beautiful Mansion in Sintra
A visit to Sintra is not complete without visiting Quinta da Regaleira, one of the most beautiful estates classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO within the "Cultural Landscape of Sintra". Quinta da Regaleira is a neo-gothic mansion designed and built in the late 1800s. The major attractions of the mansion are its picturesque gardens and the iconic initiation well. The initiation well is not a real well as a source of water. It is an underground tower in the Quinta da Regaleira built for ceremonial purposes. It consists of a 27-metre spiral staircase about 6 storeys high. At the bottom of the well are two main tunnels, one of which leads to the outdoor garden. It was truly a surreal and magical experience walking down the well and through the tunnels!

7 Things to Know Before Going to Roca Cape|You should always come to the westernmost point of the Eurasian continent to watch a sunset
At 38 degrees 47 minutes north latitude and 9 degrees 30 minutes west longitude, this is the westernmost point of the Eurasian continent🧭
Without the song of seagulls circling and the warm, soft white sand, under the rugged cliffs covered with wild grass, the Atlantic Ocean is rolling with surging waves and rising water vapor from afar🌊
The last ray of sunlight on this continent falls here every day.
"The land ends here, and the sea begins here."
This is the deepest confession of Portuguese poet Camões to Roca Cape. Every soul longing for freedom must love this desolation♥️
🌟A few small things to check in at Roca Cape🌟
1⃣️ Chase the last sunset of the Eurasian continent every day🌄
When the sky turns orange, it is the last sunset on this continent every day.
2⃣️ Buy a "Arrival at the westernmost point of Europe" certificate📄
But, be sure to do these things before sunset😉 Because the souvenir shop closes before it gets dark.
3⃣️ Visit Pena Palace 20 kilometers east of Roca Cape🏰
Standing on the top of the mountain, Pena Palace is just like a fairy tale - crossing valleys and forests🌲, walking through the greenery supported by giant trees, next to the mossy old tree roots, the wild flowers on the roadside are vying for beauty🌺, turning a corner, a colorful castle suddenly appears.
The hodgepodge architectural style combines Gothic, Renaissance, Moorish, and Manueline styles all together. Having visited many palaces and castles, Pena Palace is undoubtedly the most brilliant one.
4⃣️ Visit the Moorish Castle🛤
Adjacent to Pena Palace, this castle built by the Arabs witnessed the turbulent dynasty changes on the Iberian Peninsula.
5️⃣Little knowledge about Roca Cape you must know⛵️
600 years ago, Prince Henry's expedition team bid farewell to the land from Roca Cape, crossed the devil's sea area Bojador Cape, and opened the chapter of the Portuguese maritime empire⚓️.
Before that, the desolate Roca Cape was the end of the known world.
Across the sea, it is the distant east coast of the United States🇺🇸. Before encountering that other continent, the blue unknown was the only master of this domain.
At that moment, you will understand that in front of nature, time flows slowly in billions of years. Standing on the cliff, it always makes people feel that those troubles belonging to life have suddenly become one in a billion.
6️⃣Visiting time🕙
▪️It is recommended to arrive one hour before sunset and enjoy the last sunset of the Eurasian continent here every day.
▪️The recommended tour duration is 2 hours (excluding Pena Palace and Moorish Castle)
7️⃣Arrival transportation🚗
▪️If you are just going to visit Pena Palace and Moorish Castle in Sintra, you can easily reach by self-driving and public transportation.
▪️If you go to Roca Cape to watch the sunset, it is more recommended to drive from Lisbon. There is less return transportation after sunset, and you may encounter the embarrassment of not being able to return to the city.
Sintra day trip
A day trip to Sintra is a good way to extend your trip in lisbon. Located a few hours away from lisbon, sintra is popular for travelers like us. Its colorful and eclectic architecture, unique gardens, and stunning views are breathtaking. The town has a laid-back atmosphere, with narrow streets lined with shops, cafes, and restaurants serving traditional Portuguese cuisine. Sintra is easily accessible by train from Lisbon, and a day trip is sufficient to explore its main attractions.

Cape Rocca: the westernmost point of continental Europe.
Some people say that this is the place where life must go once.
The famous poem of the Portuguese poet Carmons: "Onde a terra acaba e o mar comea". Because of this sentence, I not only went once - the first time was sunset, the second was sunny morning. The hovering of the
Atlantic is enough to reminiscent of the Portuguese fleet that once smashed the sea.
Cape Roca in Colares must visit 🇵🇹
#europetrip
Cape Roca, or Cabo da Roca in Portuguese, is a stunning cape by the Atlantic Ocean in Portugal, perched on a narrow cliff about 140 meters high at the western tip of the Sintra Mountains. 2
This cape, situated at the westernmost point of Portugal and the whole Eurasian continent, is marked by a lighthouse and a cross overlooking the ocean. A famous Portuguese phrase, "Where the land ends and the sea begins" (Onde a terra acaba e o mar começa), is inscribed on the monument at Cape Roca.
Netizens have recognized Cape Roca as one of the "50 places in the world worth visiting," highlighting its breathtaking beauty and unique location.
🇵🇹 Cape Roca, the Westernmost Point of Continental Europe
Cabo da Roca or Cape Roca is a cape which forms the westernmost point of continental Europe. It is about 20 km and 30 minutes drive from Sintra. The cape is famous for its spectacular steep cliffs rising 140m above the Atlantic Ocean. On the highest point of Cabo da Roca stands a 22-m lighthouse built in 1772.
It was very windy at the cliff during our visit. We also witnessed an approaching storm over the sea. Keep in mind not to climb over the fences as there have been a few accidents in the past where people fell to death while taking photos near the cliffs.

Moorish Castle Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Jul)
Castelo dos Mouros in Sintra
For breathtaking views head for Castelo dos Mouros in Sintra.
Located on the way to Palácio da Pena, it can be reached on a tuk-tuk or on foot if you don't mind the walk (roughly 45 minutes from the bottom of the hill.) There are some trails that lacks signs, but on the day of my visit, I saw plenty of people heading to the same place and I just confirmed I was on the right track with them.
Entry is 8 euros and cards are accepted. The ticket vending machine doesn't work, so go through the stone passageway opposite the vending machine and walk along the path to find the entrance and ticket office.
You need at least 45 minutes to visit the place. Walk along the the wall and enjoy the stunning views.
Real-life Disney Castle
Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a captivating Portuguese town known for its opulent palaces, extravagant villas, historic sites, lush forests and jagged hills.
Must-see attractions include:🌟
1.The whimsical Palácio da Pena
2. Moorish castle ruins
3. Mystical Quinta da Regaleira gardens
4. Arabian-inspired Palácio de Monserrate.
Beyond the tourist routes, Sintra offers dense forests, rugged coastlines, secluded religious sites, and breathtaking viewpoints for adventurous travelers.⛰️
How to get there:🛣
Sintra is a town in the foothills of the Sintra Mountains, about an hour northwest of Lisbon.
1. I don't recommend driving to Sintra. Parking at the palaces and within the town is tough (as in, parking options are virtually nonexistent).🚘
2. Trains run regularly from Lisbon's Rossio station (up to 6 times per hour during the busy season). Tickets are €4.60 return (5.10 Euro total if you don't already have a Viva Viagem card, which is Lisbon's transport card). The journey from Lisbon to Sintra takes about 40 minutes.🚆
3. There's also a combo ticket you can purchase for the train and Sintra buses for €14. If you're going to try to get this combo ticket, I recommend purchasing in- person at the station.
Getting around Sintra:🚍
The most affordable way to get around is by taking the tourist buses that run regular routes to Sintra's most popular attractions. These buses are 434 and 435.
