ESCAPE Shanghai for a weekend? This is a perfect island getaway if you are done with Sanya or just want something more tranquil. 🏝️
FOR 150 RMB, you can buy a ticket that includes a coach ride from Nanpu Bridge + 3hr ferry ride to the islands on the south east of Shanghai. Check the official WeChat account - 嵊泗客运 through which you can buy tickets for many different islands.
SHENGSI is one of these islands. It is linked to Shengshan island by a bridge - the one with the abandoned fishing village.
DO NOT expect a vibrant nightlife or any type of water activity apart from fishing. These islands are a destination for many fishing amateurs - specially in winter.
HOWEVER, you will get slow paced days, walkable distances all around the island, evening discussions by the sound of waves, amazing views and very friendly locals. 😊
ACCOMMODATION range from cheap guest houses to more high end ones with bath tubs and a view. There are no big hotel chains - which I personally liked. Everything seems to be owned by individuals.
IF YOU HAVE TIME, you can island hop and catch the ferry to the many other nearby islands. This was originally my plan but I just felt so confortable in Shengsi that I ended up staying for 4 days instead of 2.

A ferry ride away from Shanghai.
If you are on Shengsi island or Shengshan Island, you CANNOT miss Longtouwan also known as 无人村, located on Shengshan Island. These islands are a ferry ride away from Shanghai.
Shengsi and Shenghan islands are linked by a bridge.
It costs 60 kuai for the Longtouwan entry and probably a little bit more to get a driver to bring you there. I personally hiked around the island which is definitely possible if you like walking.
For 60 kuai you get an amazing view from the top and also to walk around the now inhabited fisherman village.
Visiting off tourist season will give you lots of opportunities for nice shots as well as lots of space for a quiet walk.

Muyu Bar is lively at night with live music performed. It can be found in the Daiwangcun area of Gouqi Island and it sits along the beach. During the daytime, waves can be heard crashing as coffee can be enjoyed on the beach front. It’s nicest to sit outside here. Drinks are reasonably priced and alcohol can be purchased by the glass or the bottle.

HouTouWan Heaven
We traveled to a small island in the East China sea, ShengShan, and discovered this abandoned fishing village. The location is quite a little ways up the mountain so I'd suggest going early if you're walking or taking a Taxi if you're willing to pay the steep fee. The views were absolutely breathtaking and every bit of sweat it took walking up there. After strolling the abandoned fishing village and taking way too many photos we walked back down the mountain and enjoyed some ice cream and beer in town. If ever you find yourself there, this is a must!

Gouqi Island’s Mountain and Sea Wonders
After checking into our local guest house on Gouqi Island, it was time to go and explore!
A coastal hiking route was recommended to us, a path that meandered from our guest house up to a hilltop that took us about an hour to make our way, leisurely, up to a stunning viewpoint where we could overlook The Aquatic Farm.
You could easily just perch on the stone benches here to watch the sun set over this stunning landscape, but we actually continued our hike up to the very top of the hill.
Up at the top, we had this incredible panoramic view of the island and of The Aquatic Farm from a further distance, and tucked behind a part of hilltop temple is where we sat to watch the sun set. If you're in need of a refreshment while up there, there is also a cute little coffee shop where all the KOLs flock to take photos in front of it's popular yellow walls.
Where I Stayed: Gouqi Sunshine Cluster Inn

Michaela (@uncoveringcities) Gouqi Island - Heaven for Seafood Lover!
A lovely weekend getaway and definitely a heaven for seafood lovers! All kind of clams, fishes, prawns and shrimps served all-day every-day.
Beaches are all walking-distance away, no matter where you stayed. And if you happen to see the painted stairs (3rd from last pic), come up and meet 巧克力 Chocolate, the spoiled Golden Retriever, mascot of the cafe! Beside it there’s a lively bar, too.
The main attraction: the Houtouwan Abandoned Village was eerily beautiful as well. Nature has definitely claimed back its rightful place. No human invention can ever match nature’s power.
Take your time exploring the paths between all those empty concrete structures (watch your steps!), listen to the sound of nature, and breathe in the cool clean air.
It may look more beautifully green in summer, so plan your trip around those months :)
Oh, and btw, don’t be surprised to see the massive graveyards on the opposite hill. Seems like the people from the village either moved to seashore or die there and buried in the neighborhood they lived in. Probably that’s why they also call the abandoned village a ghost town 👻
Important: remember to bring your passport! You’ll need it to board the ferry and check-in to the hotel.
Getting There - drive to Yangshan Shenshuigang Passenger Transport Terminal and take ferry from there. Make sure you find the right fast-ferry schedule (2.5hrs), else it’ll take 4-5hrs, then plenty of taxi awaited at the ferry dock to take you to your hotels. Or just join one of the many group tour arrange by multiple tour agencies.
Attractions - Beaches, Houtouwan Abandoned Village.
Hotels - No international hotels in this area, but all the local ones are also good and clean.
Food & Restaurants - plenty of good seafood restaurants, follow the crowds!
Shopping - local food stores / minimarkets.
Vegan-friendliness- by request, the place I stayed at kindly cook more potatoes/mushrooms/vegetables for me!

Shanghai’s Closest Island Getaway
Located in Zhejiang Province, Gouqi Island makes for a great little getaway when you're need a 2-3 day break from Shanghai. The main attraction - the abandoned village of Houtouwan - is an old fishing village that was abandoned two decades ago due to inconvenient transportation and access. Now, the village lies silent (except for the tourists that now flock there), completely swallowed up by nature as vines cover the old houses.
To get to the island itself is quite the trip:
1. Go to the Nanpu Bridge Bus Station, and take a bus and ferry to Shengshan Island or Gouqi Island (which are connected via a bridge.) This segment of the journey will take around 4 hours.
2. Once you have arrived, you can take a taxi to Houtouwan, and hike through the village!
When visiting the abandoned island, you will need at least 2-3 hours to allow enough time to explore and take pictures!

Michaela (@uncoveringcities) An Island near Shanghai and Hangzhou
Address:(Mountain Resort Villa)no16 Wannian lane, Shengshan Town, Shengsi County, Zhoushan
Great ambience and helpful staff. They help you from the minute you book a room. They organize a taxi from the pier and everywhere else you need to go to. They also help you with booking the ferry, to and from the island, that suits your itinerary.
There’s a summarized map on the wall of all attraction sites around the island .
I was mainly there for abandoned island, however there are cute lighthouse spots, beaches and other photo spots.
There are also a lot of cafes and sea food restaurants to watch the sunset with a great sea view. There are also a lot of elegant hotels like this one.
There are no shopping malls so don’t expect to go shopping there. There are just tiny stores with essential like towels, sandals etc.
The pool and the sea view from the hotel is what drew me to the hotel. The more expensive rooms have private pools on the balcony of the room.
Rooms range from 600 to 1500元

The Yellow Steps you can’t miss
Located on Gouqi Island, Zhoushan
Address: 嵊山枸杞景区 (Shengshan Wolfberry scenic area)
You can either drive there or use a taxi. Depending on which side of the island you have staying at, you might have to drive through the main bridge on the Island.
There’s a small cafe behind the stairs with a great sea view. At first, I thought you had to buy something from the café to take pictures on the stairs but there’s absolutely no need. You could literally just get there, take pictures and leave. You could also go upstairs to have a scenic view of the island. There’s a restaurant right next to the café and a beautiful hotel with a café and restaurant within 15 minutes walking distance.

Visiting Gouqi Island 🏝
This place is the true evidence that nature will always claim what it belongs to it. This wonderful place is called Gouqi Island (枸杞岛). This island is located not far from Shanghai and east of Hangzhou. From Shanghai you can take the ferry and travel to the island in around 4 hours. The name "Gouqi" derives from the plant which grows on it, Gouqi. all the old houses are completely cover with this plant, making this place mysterious and beautiful. The island has a number of small townsites around it, and little in the way of resorts or other major tourist developments. It is primarily a fishing island. Sunrise and sunsets can be interesting to see in this time of the year (Autumn). summer time there are chance of rain and typhoons. #gouqi #island #abandonedvillage
#beaches
The islands here are scattered and have not been fully developed. They are quieter. You can enjoy the blue sky and the blue sand and white sand waves. If you want to feel the romantic style, you can go to the flower and bird island called "China Santorini". If you watch the sunrise, you can go to the East Cliff cliff scenic spot on Lushan Island. If you want to see the sunset, you can go to Yeouido. Since it is an island, of course, there is no shortage of seafood. The island is known as the East China Sea fishery. Everyone must eat fresh seafood caught by local fishermen. Now it is just the season of eating crabs. Don’t miss it~ The sea, listening to the sea breeze, you can also go to Houtouwan Village to explore the uninhabited situation, and feel the Chinese version of the "The Wizard of Oz." It is often seen from the plane flying from Guangzhou to Narita.
The village was once home to more than 2,000 fishermen among other residents, but was abandoned in the early 1990s. ... Reasons for the near total abandonment of the village include problems with education and food delivery. Since its abandonment, greenery has overtaken what was once a bustling village.

Gouqi & Shengshan island. Beautiful and mystery islands. friendly people, amazing landscapes and seafood. worth of visiting !
Yangshan Deepwater Port Scenic Area
If you’re driving out to Dishui Lake in remote Pudong, you might as well go a little further out to Yangshan Deepwater Port. The world’s busiest container port is a hive of activity and there are two great scenic outlook offering excellent views of the port and the sunset. It’s a nice place to check out if you’re so inclined. You need a car though and the bridge toll is 20RMB each way.

#capetown is so far the most beautiful place ever visited. Geographically situated in the foothills of well curved 1km tall #tablemountain ⛰ which suddenly rose in front of your eyes and the #atlantic Ocean 🌊 with beautiful sand beaches 🏖 on the other side, you can see the beautiful picturesque of the city from different angles.
You can also get the vibrant night life, relaxing beach time to swim 🏊♂️ or surf 🏄 and hiking in different mountain trails.
A few hours stretch out of the city are Cape peninsula and Table Mountain National Park and fabulous wine land of #Stellenbosch where you may submerse your body and mind into the nature.

China's most east? There may be N places that will compete with the small fishing village of Zhoushan in Zhoushan, but the sunrise here is so shocking on the five senses, whether it is in Lushan Island or Ghost Village, warming the mind and choosing a cliff. Hotel, lingering in the infinity pool, feel the time flowing like a song
The return of the East Cliff to the sunrise, you can finally see the scenery of Mount Lu.
The roads are full of shrimps, and the air is filled with the smell of dried shrimps. This is probably the unique taste and mark of the fishing town. The white float in the sea shimmers in the sun, and the scenery of the blue sea pasture.
Blue Sea Ranch, a quiet scene. Qixiang is a key township in the fishing industry. The mussel breeding industry is particularly developed and named by the Provincial Marine Fisheries Bureau as the Hometown of Mussels in Zhejiang Province. The Mussel Culture Festival is held from September to October every year. During the festival, a grand cultural and entertainment show will be held. The atmosphere of joy will last for a whole month.
This piece of sea, with a large white float group, and a large number of boats, is a good place to film. The white float floats on the surface of the sea, the sun is shining, and the waves are shining. At this moment, I understand why so many photographers have been passionate for n times, and it is indeed a beautiful island.
The car drove through a small harbor and there was a row of houses built on the hillside. This is a small harbor called "The Potala Palace at Sea". The golden glow of the morning, see Its beautiful, if you have the chance to go out by boat, you will be more beautiful.
