Exploring the 2nd largest town in Sabah - Sandakan
#100waysoftravel
Sandakan, once upon a time known as ‘Elopura’ is the second-largest town in Sabah…
Sandakan is well-known as the gateway to Borneo's wildlife, it looks like a little “Hong Kong” and is rich with colonial heritage sites
Sandakan is also the haven for seafood lovers as this is one of the place in Malaysia where you get the freshest and most affordable seafood!!!
Sandakan is also the place that conjures up the images of lush tropical rainforest, orang-utan, Bornean sun bear, proboscis monkey, pygmy elephant and more
Am also loving the colourful murals around the town…

The hauntingly lovely Sandakan Memorial Park
#myhiddengems
There's beauty in misery, sadness and things that are so unloved and forgotten.
The Sandakan Memorial Park is the exact location of the POW (Prisoner of War) camp where thousands of POWs, mostly Australian, were imprisoned by the Japanese during the World War II is a somber but beautiful and picturesque park to visit…
And yes, there has been stories of locals seeing “soldiers” still marching around the vicinity…

Sandakan - The Little Hong Kong
Why little Hong Kong? Sandakan was nicknamed Little Hong Kong due to a strong presence of ethnic chinese migration from Hong Kong.
A shortlisted for my 3 days visit in Sandakan: Central Market, Heritage Museum, Agnes Keith House, Sim Sim Water Village, Sepilok Orangutan Centre, Borneon Sun Bear Conservation Centre, English Tea House, Heritage Trail, San Da Gen Kopitiam and Trig Hill!

Langkah Syabas Beach Resort
The environment is so quiet. U can only hear the sound of the frogs & insects. Pool was ok but bit dirty. The kids like the pool's slide. Food was ok but no not much choice (less thn 10 dishes on menu) complimentary b/fast was buffet & serving simple dishes. The beach is nice but not suitable for swing. Muddy. The sunset view was beautiful 👍👍. Overall was a good trip. Will definitely come again😊

Sandakan is a city in the Malaysian state of Sabah, on the northeast coast of Borneo. The hilltop Puu Jih Shih Temple offers panoramic views of the city. Agnes Keith House is a wooden bungalow that re-creates the city's colonial-era life. The city is also a base for visiting the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and the limestone Gomantong Caves, home to swiftlets, bats and kingfishers.

Looking at those Sun Bears 👀
Getting There - The trip there was quite simple and direct, it connects to the main road quite conveniently. A standard tarred road, it was a pleasant trip with scenery, using our Toyota Hilux from Sandakan it was a fresh and easygoing way to the location. We originally came from Kota Marudu and is looking for an adventure towards the eastern parts of Sabah, safe to say it's not a bad decision at all.
Attractions - The main attraction of Borneon Sun Bear Conservation is but of course, Sun Bears or Beruang Madu in Malay which is weird considering the differing translation from English to Malay. Anyhow it makes sense when it is explained by one of the friendly official there that will act as a guide on a sector of the park. He is quite knowledgeable about the place so you can ask him a few things there and about the place and he'll answer it in a jiffy.
The Sun Bears themselves are pretty cute, they're nothing too extraordinary but it's one of the animals you seldom see in life so it was a nice experience. The place is also famous for being a hub for people to take their geographic platform on to review the Sun Bears. There's also that of a mini museum dedicated to Sun Bears they have built and a few other species we saw around the forest like monkeys of various species. It is certainly a must go if you have a knack for wildlife.
Hotels - The place itself doesn't offer any hotels so I can't comment on this.
Food & Restaurants - The Café was alright, it was nothing spectacular but for the price it was okay. the waiters was of course friendly and that's a plus.
Shopping - For locals like us the gift shop they had in store has pretty exorbitant prices for the items they had but foreigners wouldn't mind spending a few bucks for something memorable and it is to support the orginization after all, not a bad thing indeed.

Libaran island, sandakan
Libaran Island also has a number of activities for visitors to take part in namely, turtle sighting, scuba diving, sight-seeing as well as getting on-board on a river cruise. For visitors who love all things related to turtles – you’re in luck because Libaran Island is the perfect place for you! Libaran Island has a turtle sanctuary whereby visitors will have the opportunity to release baby turtles from the hatchery as well as witnessing turtles coming onto the shores of Libaran Island to lay their eggs. On Libaran Island, Walai Penyu Resort is the one and only resort on the island which offers extraordinary accommodations for visitors who intend to spend a night or two at Libaran Island. Apart from that, one of the unique facts about Libaran Island is that visitors are also able to witness Sabah’s breathtaking sunset view as well as the crystal blue waters surrounding the island.

Selingan Turtle Islands - Malaysia
Not everyone gets a rare chance to watch turtles, so if you happen to be in Borneo, you should go to a tour to the islands. It is necessary to book places in advance, there is a great chance of being left without a place, since there is only one single tour operator.
The trip lasts 2 days and one night, in the evening after dark, a group of tourists goes to the shore, where the turtles lay their eggs. The territory is fenced and protected from raids of monitor lizards or other enemies of small turtles. During the observation, you can not take pictures or turn on flashes, there is only one flashlight - the guide. You can book a trip at any travel agency in the city of Sandakan.

Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre
This center is located in the Malaysian state of Sabah, near the city of Sandakan. The center aims to help orphaned animals, baby orangutans who are left without parents or grown up in captivity adults. As you know, this species of animals suffered the fate of being on the verge of extermination by poachers, however, Malaysians are fighting for the fate of orangutans, who were unable to live in the wild.
Visitors can watch the feeding of animals, which are scheduled to gather near the viewing platforms. There is also a tropical forest on the territory of the center, where you can walk along the trails and try to see rare animals and birds with your own eyes.

Sandakan, the gateway to Sepilok
My main trip purpose was to visit Orangutan sanctuary, sun beara santuary, and RDC (Rainforest Discovery Centre), but I decided to overnight in Sandakan after flight arrival.
I had only one day, so I spend an afternoon around the waterfront, which got busier in the evening. If I had a few more hours, I would visit Sandakan Memorial Park near the airport too to learn more about WWII that Sandakan played certain role. If I directed to Sepilok, I would not regret much. Overall, Sandakan was a small, pleasant town.
Regarding public transportation, there is at least two van routes passing the junction for Sepilok. The short-distance bus terminal is opposite Nak Hotel and not far from the waterfront. I suggest you go there and ask.
For the long-distance bus station for Lahad Datu, Semporna, and KK, it is located in Letat Jaya (on the way to airport / taxi or Grab needed).

English Tea House, the Chinese name "British Tea House", is located not far from the former residence of Agnes Keith, the author of "The Home of the Wind". It has a small hillside, a very good environment, and overlooks the Sandakan cityscape and the whole The bay has a wide view. During the British colonial period, the place where the ladies had afternoon tea was converted into a restaurant, which provided afternoon tea and dinner. We enjoyed a delicious lunch here. Caesar salad, tomato beef soup, and fried fish steaks are very good. The final dessert is too sweet and a bit greasy. The most important thing is that the environment is very good. It is worthwhile to come to Sandakan. Feel some.
Relative to other popular resort islands in Sabah, Langkayang Island in Sandakan is little known, more like a private holiday paradise, where rare Chinese tourists, only beautiful to the breathtaking island style and large groups Turtles. To Langkayang Island, you need to fly to Sandakan first. The reservation will include a dock transfer. It takes only one and a half hours for the speedboat to arrive. Fortunately, the whole journey is calm. Although it is necessary to make a long journey through sea, land and air, the moment of arrival, it will be shocked by the beauty of Langkayang, and more fatigue will be swept away.
Shaba Sanda, known as the "Nanyang Small Hong Kong", was named after being close to the port and attracting a large number of Hong Kong people to come to do business. Built on the seaside promenade, Four Points by Sheraton is the best hotel in the area. The rooms are clean and comfortable, with a very good view. They have double-sided and unrivaled sea views. Stay in the room to watch the sunrise and enjoy the night view. The outdoor infinity pool of the building overlooks the sea and the city while swimming.
Baliblan Island
This is a very very small island in Sabah, Malaysia. Few tourists come here, no internet, no clutter, and can only live in a tent, but Such an island has had a fatal appeal to me.
Under the embrace of nature, calm your eyes and listen to the crabs rustling on the beach, the seabirds hovering in the sky.
aerial photography this island you will think that you have come to the city of the sky, the beauty is amazing!
by boat along the Kinabatangan River into the upper reaches of the river, crocodile elephants emerge in an endless stream, but my favorite is the monkeys here.
The first close observation of the living conditions of wild animals, the first time I realized deeply how close they are to human beings, every eye, every movement, even give me a second, they will speak. illusion. It is highly recommended for parents with children to walk into the forest so that they can know everything about the world from an early age.
The mysterious trail of the wild long nose is a must-see for Sabah.
The proboscis monkey is a unique and rare animal in Sabah. Think carefully. In fact, there are more monkeys than monkeys. I don't know if we are watching monkeys or monkeys watching our stupid humans.
Local residents live on a drainage house in the picture. The children in Sabah started to be watery from an early age. Swimming, diving and driving a boat are a piece of cake for them.
7pm, until the night falls, it is a good time to watch the fireflies.
Never thought that the first time in 30 years, fireflies were seen in exotic countries.
