Humble Qingzhou
3rd tier cities are rarely the place tourists travel to in China. And understandably so. They're often less developed and less exciting versions of bigger cities. But in these cities reside a significant percentage of China's population and, therefore, they better reflect the country's culture.
Qingzhou is one of such cities; a relatively insignificant city in modern China, but what few know is that it was quite an influential hub back in the day ... I mean WAY back in the day. Luckily some of the old town has survived (however obvious renovations are visible) and one can really imagine the good old days while navigating the little alleys. Of course it's inevitable that you will encounter the usual stores selling Sun Wu Kung face masks, milk tea, and trinkets from the early days of modern China, so don't expect any high end treasures. It might be better to just enjoy the walk, grab a bowl of noodles, and possibly get your hair trimmed outdoors by the local barbers that line the main street.
Another charming part of the city is Yunmen Mountain. It rises up a few kilometers to the south of the city and very little development surrounds it. It's a peaceful area and the hike up the mountain helps one escape the stress of city life. The reward is ultimately a marvelous view of the city and miles of countryside. Before heading back to the city, possibly pop in to one of the adorable rural restaurants at the foot and grab a bite to eat.
PS to those adventurous few: fried cicadas, crickets, scorpions, or goats head might be found on some menus

Free attractions in Qingzhou: Songcheng Scenic Area.
Qingzhou Songcheng is located on the banks of the Nanyang River. It is an ancient street rebuilt according to the painting "Along the River During the Qingming Festival" and is free to visit. The photos online are very beautiful, so I came here to check it out. I came here in the evening, and the lights were not on yet. The surrounding area was relatively desolate, and there were not many tourists. There were some small games at the entrance, which are more suitable for children. There are several small shops nearby that take photos in ancient costumes. The environment and style are also suitable for taking photos. If you are interested, you can come and have a look.
Overall feeling: It is about a 20-minute walk from the ancient city. The scenery is average during the day. I don't know if the lights will be on at night. It is not very lively. If you don't have much time, I don't recommend coming here alone.
The smile of Qingzhou has lasted for thousands of years.
The Buddhist statues unearthed from the ancient Longxing Temple site in Qingzhou, mainly from the Northern Qi Dynasty, are fascinating. The smiling faces of these statues are particularly unique, with an oriental beauty that is both subtle and mysterious, and are known as the "Qingzhou style." These statues are displayed in a special room in the Qingzhou Museum, with a permanent exhibition titled "The Smile of Qingzhou - Buddhist Statues Unearthed from the Longxing Temple Site." This is a must-see for those interested in Buddhist art and ancient Chinese sculpture.

Jinan & Qingzhou Food Guide: Shandong Cuisine is the Best!
Shandong has a lot of delicious food! The portions are generous and the prices are cheap. My friends from the south were amazed at how much food there was.
-
🌟 First, Shandong cuisine is one of the eight major cuisines in China.
The first meal we had in Jinan was at a Shandong restaurant that was said to be good! We ordered the signature dishes: "Stir-fried Pork Kidney," "Braised Pork Intestines," "Stir-fried Pork Liver, Kidney, and Tripe," "Sweet and Sour Pork," "Seafood Soup," "Oil Cake," and more.
😅 I had never seen any of these dishes before, but they were all delicious. Although I don't particularly like eating offal, this was acceptable.
-
🌟 We had Shandong fried chicken for dinner.
The portions were huge! There were also pancakes. The fried chicken was very flavorful, not spicy but very strong. After eating the chicken, you can add wide noodles to the pot (amazing!). I always thought fried chicken was like braised chicken, but it's not. It's more like a chicken hot pot.
-
🌟 Although we didn't go to Zibo, we did have Zibo barbecue.
Zibo barbecue was very popular before. We passed by Zibo on our way to Qingzhou and suddenly remembered that we could try it, so we arranged a meal. Six girls ordered a meal for 3–4 people and almost couldn't finish it! The meat skewers were really good and solid... and they tasted great, wrapped in warm grilled pancakes. Delicious! 🤪
The meal only cost 25 per person, and we ate a lot of meat skewers. It was so cheap! 😅
-
🌟 Qingzhou snacks!
When visiting Qingzhou Ancient City, it's a good idea to buy some local specialty snacks, such as "Honey Three Knives" and "Baked Cake." You can also buy honey peaches, which are a local specialty. The candied haws here are amazing! And cheap! I ate them for two days in a row. 😋
-
In conclusion, I used to think that Shandong food wasn't particularly appealing, but after trying it, I found it to be really good. 😍

[Sawtooth Cliff] Time to see the red leaves~ But there are too many people🧡||Weekend trip from Qingdao to Weifang, Qingzhou to see the red leaves🍂
⛰️Sawtooth Cliff is so beautiful, and this week seems to be the best time to visit~
Walking into the woods, the climb is not too tiring, but there are too many people on weekends👯♀️
The whole journey is about 5 km, with an elevation gain of 300 m. You can see the top, and we took a small loop, which was very comfortable~
🚌Navigation: Nanwuzi (there is a parking area at the foot of the mountain)
There are many scenic spots there, so if you have enough time, you can visit more. There are many persimmons on the mountain, yellow and bright~
⛰️There are also villagers selling some mountain goods, such as sour jujube juice, on the roadside, and you can support the livelihood of the mountain people
(I haven't eaten sour jujube for a long time, so I bought some)
👯♀️👯♀️👯👯👯♂️👯♂️But there were too many people when I went on the weekend🙂↔️
🧡The view from the top of Sawtooth Cliff is unique, and you just need to have legs~

As you walk along the stream, you will see a different view with every step, as if you are walking in a flowing landscape painting, making you feel relaxed and forget the troubles of the world.

In spring, Taihe Mountain is full of blooming flowers, with cherry blossoms and azaleas competing for beauty, forming a splendid sea of flowers. In summer, the greenery is lush, in autumn, the mountains are covered with maple leaves, and in winter, the pine branches are covered with snow. The changing seasons each have their own charm. The winding terraces, in particular, present different colors in different seasons, with distinct layers and breathtaking beauty.

Longxing Temple.
After visiting the Qingzhou Museum, we went to Longxing Temple nearby. Located on the north side of Wangfu West Street, Qingzhou City, Weifang City, Shandong Province, and on the south side of Qingzhou Museum, it is a site from the Southern and Northern Dynasties to the Ming Dynasty. It was founded in the Southern Dynasty Liu Song, developed during the Northern Wei and Eastern Wei periods, reached its peak during the Tang and Song Dynasties, and disappeared during the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty. In October 1996, a Buddhist statue hoard from the late Northern Song Dynasty or early Jin Dynasty was discovered in the northern part of the site. After cleaning, more than 600 Buddhist statues, 142 coins, and 2 pieces of ceramics were unearthed. Most of these statues still retain their original colors of painted and gilded paintings, such as cinnabar, sapphire blue, ochre, peacock green, black, white, and other natural mineral pigments. Some statues even have painted pictures of characters and stories on their bodies or clothes. The Buddhist statues unearthed from the Longxing Temple hoard in Qingzhou are large in number, exquisitely carved, well-preserved with gilded paintings, and have a long time span. They make up for the lack of physical materials in the archaeological study of Chinese Buddhism, especially the archaeological study of Buddhism in the Eastern Wei and Northern Qi periods, and provide valuable materials for the study of Chinese Buddhist archaeology and Chinese art history. On March 5, 2013, the Longxing Temple site in Qingzhou was announced by the State Council of the People's Republic of China as the seventh batch of national key cultural relics protection units. It is in a great location, right next to the entrance to the Tuoshan Scenic Area. Parking is convenient, and it is open to the public for free.

Qingzhou Smile.
On the fourth floor of the Qingzhou Museum, there is a special exhibition hall - the Buddhist Statue Art Exhibition of the Longxing Temple Site, which displays about 400 Buddhist statues unearthed from the Longxing Temple Site. These statues are mainly from the Northern Wei, Eastern Wei, and Northern Qi periods, and are exquisitely carved, painted, and gilded, and well preserved. The smile on the face of the Buddha statue is particularly eye-catching. These smiles are peaceful and serene, showing kindness, confidence, and calmness, with an expression of insight into everything in the world. They are unique in Buddhist art and are known as the "Oriental Mona Lisa" and "Oriental Venus". This is the "Qingzhou Smile". Immersed in the kind smile of the Buddha statue from a thousand years ago, you can deeply feel the Buddha's devotion to life and the inner peace in the face of suffering and turmoil. It is really healing and purifying. Each of us is born crying into the world, but we can smile and walk into eternity.

Ancient Charm and Scenic Beauty: A Timeless Journey Through Qingzhou Ancient City
Qingzhou Ancient City, with a history spanning over two thousand years, is a place where the beauty of nature and rich cultural heritage converge. Stepping into the ancient city feels like entering a time tunnel, with city walls, stone-paved roads, and old alleys all preserving traces of history. The traditional architecture with green bricks and black tiles is both rustic and elegant, telling stories of a once-prosperous era. As you stroll through the streets and alleys, you are greeted by a strong cultural atmosphere. The academies, temples, and archways here have withstood the test of time and still stand quietly.
Qingzhou's natural scenery is equally captivating. The Yunmen Mountain and Yangtian Mountain within the city are picturesque, with the beauty of the mountains and waters complementing the tranquility of the ancient city, resembling a traditional ink painting. Climbing Yunmen Mountain offers a panoramic view of Qingzhou Ancient City, surrounded by mountains and waters, providing a refreshing and exhilarating experience.
A journey through Qingzhou Ancient City allows you to feel the weight of history and appreciate the grandeur of nature. Every brick and tile, every mountain and water here is imbued with rich cultural heritage and historical charm, making it a timeless journey worth cherishing.
Weifang Qingzhou Huanghuaxi | Stunning autumn scenery, encounter the beauty of nature.
| Stunning autumn scenery, encounter the beauty of nature. 💐Highlights:
🎈Autumn is nature's palette, and Weifang Qingzhou Huanghuaxi is a treasure not to be missed this season. If you're used to the hustle and bustle of the city, Huanghuaxi is like a paradise, a breath of fresh air.
📍Transportation:
Driving is recommended as the scenic area is remote and transportation is inconvenient. From Qingzhou Ancient City, take the Jiwei Expressway. As you approach the exit, you can see the mountains of Huanghuaxi. The mountains are half red and breathtaking. Unfortunately, I was so amazed that I forgot to take pictures. But that's okay, the beautiful scenery is in my eyes and in my memory.
🏞️Scenic Area Features:
🌊Waterfalls and Streams: Huanghuaxi has waterfalls and streams. Although the waterfalls are man-made, they are still spectacular. The water is turned off around 4 pm, so if you want to take pictures, be sure to enter the mountains early.
🏔️Mountains: There are mountains here. Walk along the boardwalk, surrounded by mountains, breathing in the sweet, free air, and feeling the charm of nature.
🎢Activities: There are shuttle buses, magic carpets, slides, rafting, and other activities in the scenic area. You can choose according to your preferences. We chose to hike the whole way, which took about 2.5 hours, and every step was a different view.
📸Recommended Photo Spots:
💦Sanhe Waterfall: The waterfall cascades down, splashing water everywhere, making it a great place to take pictures.
🌌Water Curtain Cave: Personally, I think the photo spots in the Water Curtain Cave are not as good as those outside, but you can still go and experience it.
💧Daughter Spring: There are many leeches in the spring, which is a bit scary, but it also adds a touch of natural wildness.
⚠️Notes:
🚾There are few toilets in the scenic area, so it's best to drink less water when climbing the mountain.
🧥We went on October 20, and the temperature on the mountain is lower than at the foot of the mountain, so be prepared for the cold.
💖I heard that after the first frost, Huanghuaxi is covered in red, just like the saying "frost leaves are redder than February flowers." This autumn, come to Huanghuaxi, forget your worries, escape the hustle and bustle, and immerse yourself in nature. Whether it's a family trip, a couple's trip, or a trip with friends, Huanghuaxi is a great choice.
The best hotel in Qingzhou in my opinion.
There are thousands of hotels and homestays in Qingzhou, but I only recommend this one - "Jianguo Puyin". Whether it is the location, room facilities, service details, or breakfast quality, it is very satisfactory! Taxis are not allowed in the ancient city, and the hotel is located at the gate of the city wall. It is not far to walk with luggage, and it is very close to the central area of the ancient city, a five-minute walk. I chose one of the only two suites. The room is very large. The balcony is directly opposite to Ouyang Xiu's former residence. There are almost no people usually, and it is quieter at night. The living area in the room is a large TV, the bedroom is a giant screen projection, the bathroom, shower room, and bathtub are all separate rooms, and the layout is very reasonable. Let me talk about a small detail. I didn't find a floor towel the night before. I mentioned it to the front desk casually. This apology fruit was delivered immediately. With the sincere attitude of the staff, I immediately felt that it was not a problem at all! Everyone come to Qingzhou Ancient City, just choose here!
Come here to pray for "blessings, longevity, health, and peace".
"Ou Garden" is probably one of the more worthwhile attractions in Qingzhou Ancient City. It was the East Garden of the Prince Heng Mansion in the Ming Dynasty. After being purchased by Feng Daxueshi in the Qing Dynasty and several renovations, it became what it is today. It covers an area of 55 acres. The most famous things inside are the various strangely shaped Taihu stones and rockeries, especially the Taihu stones that symbolize the four characters "blessings", "longevity", "health", and "peace". You can vaguely make out the shapes, and you can really get some luck. It is said that the stone stacking art here is comparable to that in Zhongnanhai. Friends who like this style should not miss it.
