2025 Portree Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in June)

#2024mapped Skye is not an easy travel destination: it could take a good 6hour drive from Glasgow to reach the furthest part of Skye (Neist Point), and the driveway could be one-lane a lot of the times. But it’s more than worth it—and even more so if you have a drone (I don’t, but I can tell only a drone could do the natural landscape here justice). Since it’s not the most traveled destination, it took me some while to know where to go. Here’s some of my recommendation: 1) Sligachan Old Bridge - located almost in the gateway of Skye, so everyone would have pass through Sligachan before heading onto other parts of Skye, but the view is golden m 2) Elgol Beach - one has to make detour (1hr one-way) to come to this place, but I had no regret to have chosen to come here. The beach has unique background, and the views along the way as we drove was rewarding too 3) Neist Point - gorgeous cliff, but it’s located almost at the northwestern end of Skye. It’s almost pitch dark at night, so plan ahead as to what time to start heading back to town—if your accommodation is one of the cottages in this neighborhood, do bring in your own food (or prebook a restaurant coz NOT A SINGLE restaurant do walk-in dinner here) 4) Fairy Glen - the mysterious circle which many people come for was a complete letdown, but the entire place has plenty of good views, being a well-covered “plains” with rivers, lakes and small hills. 5) Old Man of Storr - the views is great at some point but the hike is a tad long (at least 2 hours two-way), so be mentally prepared 6) Quirirang - pretty but the wind was like dangerously strong at a lot of viewpoints (I guess it had something to do with the geographical structure/location of the place), so it could be very challenging to take good photos 7) Brothers Point 8) An Leth-allt View Point Overall, there are still so many more places I have yet explored since I had only two days here. My sister who have spent 10years working and travelling around monthly in New Zealand said that Skye looks quite like New Zealand. So I’d recommend those who have the luxury of time to do road trips in UK venture into Skye

#hikingtrails Hiking on the Isle of Skye was absolutely breathtaking! The landscape feels almost otherworldly with its dramatic cliffs, rolling hills, and crystal-clear lochs. My favorite hike was the Old Man of Storr, which offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape and the Sound of Raasay. There's no fee to hike here, but be prepared for some steep sections—it’s a good workout! After that, I explored the Quiraing, another magical spot with unique rock formations. Highly recommended! 【Highlights of the Itinerary】 1｜Kilt Rock & Mealt Falls Our day started with a visit to this spectacular cliffside attraction. Kilt Rock is named for its rock formations resembling a Scottish tartan kilt, while Mealt Falls cascades dramatically into the sea from a great height. The wind here was incredibly strong, but the stunning views made it impossible to care about messy hair. 2｜Old Man of Storr Hiking Next, we visited the most iconic landmark of the Isle of Skye. The guide gave us about 1.5 hours to explore the area at our own pace. I hiked up to the halfway point, where the scenery was already unbelievably beautiful—rolling hills, bays, and clouds intertwining into a dynamic landscape painting. Though the climb was a bit challenging, it was absolutely worth it! 3｜Quiraing (Weather Permitting) We passed by the majestic Quiraing mountain range and its unique canyon terrain. If the weather is good, the tour stops for photos. On our day, the area was shrouded in mist, creating a dreamy, enchanted forest atmosphere despite not seeing the full landscape. 4｜Rest Stops & Hidden Gems The guide arranged stops at small towns for restroom breaks, snacks, or lunch. Along the way, we also visited some lesser-known scenic spots not found in travel guides, capturing stunning views of lakes and valleys. The pacing of this one-day tour was just right—not too rushed, yet never dull. Although the weather on the Isle of Skye is unpredictable, with sunshine, rain, and strong winds all in one day, this unpredictability adds to its charm. If, like me, you’re not planning to drive, joining a local one-day tour is an excellent choice. It’s time-efficient, stress-free, and allows you to focus entirely on the scenery without worrying about maps or wrong turns.

#AprilGoodDestinations2025 #U.K Arriving at Portree, a small harbor in the Scottish Highlands, the first thing that came to my mind was: “I must eat seafood!” I found the highly rated PROTEE The Lower Deck on the map. It’s a small restaurant hidden by the pier, but I didn’t expect it to be the most surprising meal of the trip. The restaurant is not big and the seats are limited. It is strongly recommended to queue up before the store opens. We were lucky that day as we arrived just before the restaurant opened and were seated smoothly. But when we walked out after eating, there were already people queuing outside in the rain, which shows how popular it is! We ordered the soup, scallops with vegetables, and a pot of mussels with the chef's special sauce. That pot of mussels is really amazing! The sauce combines elements such as soy sauce, honey, and ginger, and has a subtle oriental flavor that not only brings out the sweetness of the clams, but also makes the overall layering very rich. This is the most special and unforgettable pot of mussels I have ever eaten. Although the space is small, the atmosphere is warm and the staff are friendly and will recommend dishes. The overall rhythm is well controlled, even if there are many people, you won't have to wait too long.

In spring, the surrounding heather starts to green, and Mealt Falls cascade powerfully into the sea below. Day 2: Morning visit to the V&A Museum (free, opens at 10 AM), afternoon at Westminster Abbey (book appointment on the official website), Big Ben, London Eye, and a walk along the Thames River to Borough Market before returning (a very exhausting day). Day 3: British Museum (free, book on the official website, opens at 10 AM, arrived at the back entrance at 9:25 AM with almost no queue), followed by fish and chips, Covent Garden, National Gallery (free, no appointment needed), Trafalgar Square, Chinatown. Day 4: Buckingham Palace, St. James's Park, Harry Potter Studio Tour, Harrods. Day 5: Oxford Street Liberty, Selfridges, Sherlock Holmes Museum, Regent's Park (missed the group tour to White Cliffs, so just wandered around). Day 6: Paddington to Oxford, afternoon at Blenheim Palace (check for ticket deals on Xianyu). Day 7: Bicester shopping, rest day. Day 8: Shared car tour to Cotswolds with three young ladies, very pleasant, lots of walking and photo-taking, not tiring at all. Previously visited Biei, Japan, and found similarities between the two places. British gardening skills are impressive, with every household having various flowers and unique small houses. Day 9: Christ Church College (Harry Potter filming location), Radcliffe Camera, Bridge of Sighs, Trinity College, Natural History Museum, dinner at a Turkish BBQ restaurant surrounded by Chinese restaurants. Day 10: Transition to Edinburgh, absolutely stunning! Edinburgh's weather is unpredictable, sunny and rainy. Arrived around 4 PM, dropped off luggage, and climbed Calton Hill. Edinburgh is beautiful! Medieval architecture and the distant sea complement each other, with seagulls adding romance to the city. Day 11: Edinburgh's attractions are compact, mostly walkable. From Waverley Bridge to Princes Street Gardens, Scottish National Gallery, New College, Edinburgh Castle, lunch with mussels, then Victoria Street, Rowling's handprints, St Giles' Cathedral, Elephant House Café, Greyfriars Bobby, National Museum of Scotland, and a trip to the seaside! Saw a beautiful rainbow 🌈. Another day of intense walking. Day 12: Start of a three-day tour of the Scottish Highlands, departing from Edinburgh to Loch Lomond, Glencoe (007 Skyfall filming location), Three Sisters Mountains, Harry Potter train filming location, overnight in Fort William. Day 13: Main itinerary is entering the Isle of Skye: Loch Ness, Eilean Donan Castle, Old Man of Storr, Lealt Falls, Kilt Rock, Quiraing. Day 14: Return trip, visited a whisky distillery, St Andrews (where William and Kate met), Forth Rail Bridge (featured in Jay Chou's MV "Ming Ming Jiu"). Day 15: Finally heading home! Stocked up on souvenirs!
