2024 Port Arthur Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in December)
Today's Weather
Clear 14-21℃
Popular Attractions
Tasman Peninsula
Tasmanian Devil Unzoo
Remarkable Cave
The name of the place is perhaps a slight overstatement when it comes to the cave itself. Still, it's worth the 10 minute drive here if you're already visiting Port Arthur for the coastal views around the site, and there are some great walks in the area if you have an hour or two to spare.
Port Arthur Historic Site
Could have easily spent a second day at the Port Arthur Historic Site. There's so much to see and learn. The whole place is beautiful, open, and absolutely sprawling (which is not something I ever expected to say about a prison!).
Port Arthur UNESCO Heritage Site
Tasmania is filled with many natural landscape but do you know it is also filled with many stories and historic sites from ages ago?
One is the Port Aurther Historic Site located at in the south east of horbart, where it is approx a 90mins drive around the coast to reach. This is a place that you have to visit as it was deemed under the UNESCO World Heritage Site where there are historic buildings dating back to the 18th/19th centuries along the cliffsode overlooking the coast.
This place has many tales where it wad once a place for convicts in a 4 story Penitentiary. A huge Penitentiary which consists of an asylum, hospital and a church. There are also tales of ghost story here which can be quite scary to some.
Do make this a bucketlist here in tasmania so as to understand the many history cultural and story this place has to offer.

Port Arthur Historic Site - Ghost Tour
Located 1.5 hours drive from Hobart is the Port Arthur Historic site. Initially created as a timber gathering site in the 1830’s, Port Arthur quickly became of major importance to emerging colonies in Australia due to its highly productive ship yards.
The site is large & nestled in a valley, with paths guiding your way around the site. On arrival each visitor is giving a playing card, this corresponds to a past occupant of Port Arthur & you will learn about then down stairs in the museums.
Once you have visited the museum you then head onto a 40 minute introductory tour, which shows you around the sight and gives you a deeper insight into the history of the people and the building that formed Port Arthur.
After that you proceed to the dock for your bay tour which is also included in the entry fee. This tour which goes out around one of the most important islands of the settlement is again guided.
After that you are free to roam the grounds and explore the rest of the site. There are a wide range of extra tours on offer including the “After Dark pack” which includes a 2 course meal at their on-site restaurant and a 90 minute ghost tour. The food was incredible and we had an extremely knowledgeable guide who made the experience very enjoyable.
Port Arthur & Launceston - Tasmania
Pictures Of Port Arthur & A bridge in the City of Launceston...
Taken back in 2018 when I was away for work there, and I stayed in a small country Town of Georgetown which was quite nice...
beautiful Country Side places, I would definitely recommend a Holiday/Visit there to anyone...

35 Days in Australia - Tasmania (5).
Day 5: Mount Wellington and Port Arthur
Mount Wellington is located 20 km west of Hobart, about a 30-minute drive to the top, with an elevation of 1,270 meters. There is an observation deck at the top of the mountain, where you can overlook the entire city of Hobart and the Derwent River. In winter, you can also enjoy the snow. Mount Wellington is the first choice for tourists to see Hobart because of its unique geographical location.
When you enter Port Arthur, you will see a wide lawn and the ruins of Victorian buildings, with a dazzling blue bay on the side. We first took a boat tour of the bay for about 20 minutes.
It is hard to imagine that this was once the site of a prison that was feared by many. When I first saw Port Arthur, I thought it was a beautiful English manor. Is this a prison or a paradise? I couldn't help but say, "I really want to be locked up here."
The most attractive thing about Port Arthur is that the ruins here have retained their original appearance from a hundred years ago. Although most of the buildings were destroyed by a fire in the late 19th century, the ruins add to the charm of the place.
With mountains and water, and green trees, you can stroll through this long-gone prison and explore the history of freedom that was once out of reach.

Port Arthur: A Haunting Journey into Australia's Past
#100waysoftravel
Port Arthur, a historic site located on the Tasman Peninsula in southern Tasmania, offers a haunting and unforgettable journey into Australia's dark past. Established as a penal colony in 1830, Port Arthur provides a glimpse into the harsh realities of life for convicts and prisoners in the 19th century.
Visitors to Port Arthur can explore a variety of historic buildings, including the Penitentiary, the Church of St. Mary, and the Commandant's Residence. Guided tours offer detailed insights into the history of the site and the lives of the convicts who were held there. For a more chilling experience, ghost tours delve into the paranormal activity that is said to haunt the site.
Beyond the historic buildings, Port Arthur offers stunning coastal walks and breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The Port Arthur Museum provides additional information about the history of the penal colony and the people who lived and worked there.
While the history of Port Arthur can be disturbing, it's important to approach the site with sensitivity and respect. The site offers a unique and thought-provoking experience that provides valuable insights into Australia's past. Whether you're interested in history, architecture, or the paranormal, Port Arthur is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Tasmania.
Port Arthur Historic Site: A Journey Back in Time
If you're looking for a tourist destination in Tasmania rich in history and mystery, the Port Arthur Historic Site is a must-visit! Visiting here is like traveling back to the era when Tasmania was a penal colony for British convicts. The overall atmosphere of the site evokes a strong sense of the past, preserved in its entirety.
The first thing that stands out when you walk in is the Penitentiary, the main prison that once held convicts. Its sheer size is impressive, and even the remaining ruins tell the story of the harsh lives of those imprisoned. Every building here is steeped in history, from the Commandant's House, which showcases the lifestyle of high-ranking officers, to the Separate Prison, filled with silence and isolation. We learned that this place used silence as a form of punishment instead of physical punishment, which was quite unsettling.
Besides exploring the buildings, taking a boat ride to the Isle of the Dead is another highlight. We saw the cemetery where over 1,000 convicts and officers are buried. This journey creates an eerie atmosphere and makes you feel the untold stories of the past. Unfortunately, we couldn't go ashore during our visit.
What makes a visit to Port Arthur special is the blend of history and nature. The stunning landscape around the site makes you feel that this place was both beautiful and brutal at the same time.
The entrance fees to the Port Arthur Historic Site vary depending on the package you choose. Generally, the Basic Entry Pass includes access to various sites within the area, guided tours, and a short boat trip around the Isle of the Dead (without landing). The entrance fees for 2024 are as follows:
- Adults: Approximately $47 AUD
- Children (ages 7-17): Approximately $20 AUD
- Children under 7: Free
- Family (2 adults and 2 children): Approximately $119 AUD
All tickets are valid for 2 days.
For those seeking additional experiences, such as the Isle of the Dead Tour (landing on the island) or the Ghost Tour (nighttime ghost tour), there are additional charges. Generally:
- Isle of the Dead Tour: An additional $25 AUD per person
- Ghost Tour: Approximately $39 AUD per person
It's recommended to book tickets in advance, especially if you want to join special tours.
Port Arthur's Haunting Beauty
#australiatrip
Port Arthur Historic Site, a testament to Tasmania's convict history, left me spellbound. As I wandered through the ruins, I felt the weight of stories past. The crumbling sandstone buildings, once home to convicts and guards, now stand as a poignant reminder of a bygone era. The scenic harbor, with its tranquil waters, contrasted starkly with the site's turbulent history. With each step, I uncovered a piece of the past, from the chilling Separate Prison to the poignant Memorial Garden. Port Arthur's haunting beauty and rich history make it a must-visit destination for anyone seeking to understand Tasmania's complex heritage.
Step Back in Time: Explore the Port Arthur Historic Site’s Rich History and Stunning Views

Here, you’ll find fascinating exhibits detailing the daily life of convicts, with artifacts and personal stories that add a human touch to the history. Allow loads of time for this and wear comfortable shoes!!! If you are driving be prepared for slow drivers! There is so much to see and explore however a lot of it is in ruins and some is closed to the public as well. There is also a boat ride included. Be prepared for all kinds of weather; I didn’t have a hat or sunscreen- mistake :( no ghosts jumped out at me lol; however there are chilling stories and little mysteries to discover around every corner and in every nook and cranny. Also don’t forget to take plenty of water as it’s a big place to explore!

When I arrived at Port Arthur, I also changed my dreams. The biggest attraction of Port Arthur is the prison site. This is a small town with a long history. It was once a rehearsal of exile. Gloomy, sturdy, dark, this is the first impression most people have on prisons, but Port Arthur Historic Sites tells the history and shows the nature of Port Arthur. The scenery is beautiful. Looking over the sky from the sky, I felt a bit beautiful.
Right, there is also the famous Three Capes hiking route. It takes about 3 days to complete the walk. The foreigner likes to walk on foot. I can't walk. Impressions Port Arthur's historic site tickets are AUD 20, which is one of the few places in Tasmania where Chinese babies are introduced. Perhaps the Australian people are more concerned about history and culture.
The most well-known existence of the entire historical port of Port Arthur belongs to this former prison office. In fact, I originally tried to take a night scene of a ghostly photo. I didnt expect a ghost tour at night. It was cleared at 7 o'clock... sorry to miss it.
Port Arthur is a small town in Tasmania, Australia, but it is an extraordinary significance of the prison ruins built by the felons of the first Commonwealth countries, such as a small city. It is part of the Australian epic. The beauty is also praised by people.
This place is also known as the most beautiful ghost place in Australia. Some passengers say that they have photographed ghosts in the wooden house. The chair will shake themselves. At night, there are often strange sounds coming from ancient houses. . The scenic spot simply does the haunted business, and every night there is a place where ghosts bring tourists to experience the most ghosts.
