Terraced fields stretch up to the clouds along the mountains, and the Baishui River runs through the village, dividing Xijiang Miao Village into two. Here you can experience the simple local customs and a different geomorphological style. It is known as the Chinese version of 'Spirited Away'.
📍 Miaowang City
Located in Songtao Miao Autonomous County, Guizhou Province, it was first built in the early years of the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty and was originally the residence of the Miao chieftain. Zhenyuan Ancient Town, a thousand-year-old town hidden deep in the mountains of Guizhou.
Located in Qiandongnan, Guizhou, this ancient town is surrounded by mountains and the beautiful Wuyang River runs through it. Although it is a 5A scenic spot, it is not as famous as Fenghuang Ancient Town, Wuzhen, Lijiang, and Dali. However, the more it is like this, the more original the scenic spot is, and the more intense the fireworks are, it is worth a visit.

Hidden in the mountains and rivers - Zhenyuan Ancient Town.
🏯Zhenyuan Ancient Town is located in Zhenyuan County, Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture, Guizhou Province. It is a scenic spot for eating, living and playing.
🌳Zhenyuan Ancient Town retains the original landscape and residential structure. The river meanders into an S-shape through the city. Overlooking from a high place is also like the dividing line of Tai Chi Yin and Yang. The north bank is the old prefecture city, and the south bank is the old guard city, both of which were built in the Ming Dynasty, and some city walls and city gates still exist. There are ancient buildings, traditional houses, and historical wharfs inside and outside the city.
🏞️It is suitable to climb high and see the ancient city during the day, 🌌and you must walk in the city at night. The colorful lights and river reflections are colorful. There are many shops along the street, and the goods and specialties are dazzling. There will be stars and lights on the mountain at night, and the artistic conception is very beautiful.
🍶🥃The homestays in the ancient city have unique styles, built by the river, and the river is just outside the door, and you can overlook the mountains and rivers, and then have a glass of Guizhou's sauce-flavored wine, which is very comfortable.

Guizhou Zhenyuan Night tour of Zhenyuan Ancient Town, encounter the colorful dance of Wu Yang River.
✨Night tour of Zhenyuan Ancient Town: A colorful dreamland by the Wu Yang River
🚗Traffic routes & self-driving parking information🚗
Originally planned to go straight to Kaili, we took a detour to this charming ancient town - Zhenyuan, as recommended by our friends. Although the self-driving route from Guiyang is a bit far, the road conditions are excellent, and the scenery along the way is picturesque. After arriving in Zhenyuan, the roads within the ancient city are narrow, so it is recommended for self-driving friends to park their cars in the parking lots around the ancient city (such as Shuntong Parking Lot), which costs 30 yuan/day per car, which is convenient and worry-free. After parking, walk into the ancient town and feel the tranquility and simplicity.
🎫Ticket information🎫
Zhenyuan Ancient Town is a national 5A scenic spot, but the entrance to the ancient town itself is free! However, some core attractions such as Qinglong Cave and Shi Ping Mountain require separate tickets. As for tonight's night tour protagonist - Wu Yang River, although the daytime cruise ticket is 60 yuan, the night cruise experience is more unique, with a ticket price of 80 yuan, which is definitely worth the price!
🌃Night tour of the ancient town, the colorful beauty of Wu Yang River🌃
As night falls, Zhenyuan Ancient Town seems to have put on a different face. Walking slowly along the Wu Yang River, the lights on both sides gradually light up, decorating the ancient town like a dream. The Wu Yang River flows through the city in an "S" shape, with clear water reflecting the lights on both sides, forming a flowing light and shadow scroll.
As the cruise ship slowly sails out, we seem to have entered a colorful world. The lights on the ship and the reflections on the river complement each other, and each ripple shines with different colors. The night view of the ancient town unfolds slowly before our eyes, and the ancient bridges and the staggered ancient buildings appear more solemn and mysterious in the night. The gentle music and the whispers of the boatman make people involuntarily immerse themselves in this tranquility and beauty.
🏞️Attraction features🏞️
Wu Yang River: As the soul of Zhenyuan Ancient Town, the night view of Wu Yang River is undoubtedly the highlight of this trip. Whether you take a night cruise or stroll along the river, you can feel the unique charm.
Zhusheng Bridge: As an important bridge connecting the two banks, Zhusheng Bridge is not only a traffic artery, but also a great place for taking photos. The Zhuangyuan Building and Kuixing Pavilion on the bridge are even more simple and elegant in the night.
Qinglong Cave: Although the architectural beauty of Qinglong Cave can be better appreciated during the day, it also has a unique charm at night. The ancient buildings illuminated by the lights add a touch of mystery.
📚Humanities and history📚
Zhenyuan Ancient Town has a history of more than 2,000 years and is one of China's historical and cultural cities. It was once an important military town and commercial center in ancient times, leaving behind many precious historical sites. Walking through every corner of the ancient town, you can feel the profound historical atmosphere.
🍽️Food recommendation🍽️
How can you come to Zhenyuan without tasting the local cuisine? Sour soup fish is one of the signature dishes of Zhenyuan Ancient Town, and its sour and spicy taste has won the favor of countless diners. Inventory of Guizhou's Beautiful Villages and Ancient Fortresses (with Private Tips)
Who hasn't been to Guizhou yet🌿? Recently, Guizhou tourism is really hot🎈🎈. Let me list a few ancient towns and fortresses with high cost-performance💯 for everyone🥰🥰 (there are warm tips under each attraction㊙️㊙️).
1⃣ Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village
If there is any place in China that most resembles Hayao Miyazaki's anime movies, Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village is definitely one of them. The stilted buildings built layer upon layer on the mountain make you feel like you are in the world of 'Spirited Away' at night. Taking photos here is really photogenic, whether it's sunny, rainy, morning, or night, whether you stand halfway up the mountain, by the Xijiang River, or next to the rice fields, you can take anime-like photos.
📝Tips:
It's best to stay here for two or three days, stay in a mountainside homestay, and the scenery is right outside the window. It's best to travel freely and not with a group. As long as you leave the main street and walk towards the mountainside or distant rice fields, there will be much fewer tourists.
2⃣ Zhenyuan Ancient Town
It has been rated as one of the top ten most beautiful ancient towns in China and is also known as the Oriental Venice, with beautiful scenery and a long history. At first glance, it looks very similar to Fenghuang Ancient Town in Hunan, but it is more primitive and simple here.
📝Tips:
You should also stay in Zhenyuan Ancient Town for two or three days and stroll around slowly. Compared to Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village, it is quieter and more primitive here. Although it is a 5A scenic spot, there is no entrance fee, making it very cost-effective. If you come here in summer, you can also go rafting in the Gaoguo River, which ranks among the top three in the domestic rafting scene. In addition, Zhenyuan's tofu flower grilled fish is a must-try.
3⃣ Zhaoxing Dong Village
It has been rated as the most beautiful Dong village and was once a sub-venue for the CCTV Spring Festival Gala. It is also the largest Dong village in the world. Unlike general scenic spots, many of the vendors and shop owners here are locals, giving it a strong cultural atmosphere. You can meet mothers carrying firewood on the road.
📝Tips:
The transportation to Zhaoxing Dong Village is also the most convenient. You can take the high-speed train directly to Congjiang Station, and then there is a direct bus to the scenic spot, which is very convenient.
4⃣ Xiashi Ancient Town
This is a relatively niche ancient town, quiet and simple, but it was once very prosperous, known as Little Shanghai, with restaurants, pawnshops, and taverns everywhere, and the docks bustling with people and boats. There are many cultural relics and ancient buildings preserved here, suitable for slow sightseeing.
📝Tips:
Xiashi Ancient Town is very close to Kaili, the capital of Qiandongnan Prefecture, and the transportation is convenient. It is very suitable for friends who like niche attractions, with beautiful scenery and many cultural relics and ancient buildings.

So far, my favorite hidden gem city has appeared!!
In the past two years of traveling, I have visited many ancient towns, both big and small.
But only here has left me with very beautiful memories!
I want to recommend this thousand-year-old ancient town that I have been longing for to everyone
"Oriental Venice" 📍Zhenyuan Ancient Town~
-
This is my favorite place I visited this summer! It's really comfortable. First of all, the ancient town does not charge an entrance fee, and there are not many people. Walking along the stone-paved road by the river, you can see rows of ancient buildings with blue bricks and black tiles. It's even more pleasant to feel the river breeze at night🍃
-
🚌Regarding transportation, I came directly from Zhaoxing Dong Village. There are direct buses between the scenic spots, which is very convenient.
-
Here are some travel tips:
1. The ancient town itself does not require an entrance fee, but some attractions inside do. Qinglong Cave 60💰 Shibing Mountain 30💰
2. The most special thing to do in Zhenyuan is to take a boat ride. I really recommend the night tour. The lights on both sides are bright, and the river breeze is very comfortable.
3. Don't worry about accommodation here. There are many homestays on both sides of the river, and they are not expensive, 100-200💰, with the Wuyang River right outside the window.
4. The food here is also a highlight: tofu grilled fish, tofu noodles, tofu balls...

Planning to go to Guizhou? Don't come here
I had a hard time deciding whether to go to Zhenyuan or Miao Village when I traveled to Guizhou before. Finally, I took the advice of the locals and chose Zhenyuan.
🧭Travel Guide:
Zhenyuan is really nice! Compared to Miao Village, which has many slopes, making it tiring to walk around, and is heavily commercialized with expensive hotels, Zhenyuan offers much better value for money. It is nestled by the mountains and water, has unique characteristics, and is not overly commercialized, exuding a strong sense of local life. At night, the red lanterns along both sides of the Wuyang River light up, creating a beautiful scene! There aren't many tourists during the day, but it gets lively at night, with many people renting Miao costumes to take night photos. Zhenyuan, a thousand-year-old town and a 5A scenic spot in Guizhou, is known as the 'Venice of the East.' The ancient town itself does not require an entrance fee, but some attractions inside do. For example, the Qinglong Cave, an ancient architectural temple complex built on the mountain, has an entrance fee of 60 yuan per person. It's truly amazing to see the craftsmanship and wisdom of the ancients. If you have the stamina, you can climb Shibing Mountain for 30 yuan per person and get a panoramic view of the ancient town from the top. If you want to take a boat ride, it's 70 yuan per person, and you can enjoy the night view of the ancient town along the Wuyang River. Zhusheng Bridge is also a great spot for photos. There are many water activities like jet skiing, water sofas, and water flying, which are all very fun. In the evening, you can go to the bar street, have a drink, and experience the nightlife of the ancient town.
🏨Hotel Guide:
We stayed at Jiulong Yipin Hotel, which had a very rich breakfast and a viewing terrace with great scenery.
👍Route Guide:
We started from Hangzhou, went to Sansui first, and then took a bus from the Sansui hub (right next to the train station) to Zhenyuan for 25 yuan per person. After arriving in Zhenyuan, we had to take a bus to the ancient town. However, we booked a car online for 50 yuan per person, which took us directly to the hotel in Zhenyuan Ancient Town, making it convenient and hassle-free.
🍲Local Delicacies:
Yuan's Tofu Pudding, An's Baked Cake, Weixiao Bridge Cold Noodles, Liangyouyou Ice Sweet Wine, and Sour Soup Fish are all very delicious and must-tries.
✨Other Tips:
Zhenyuan Ancient Town is suitable for all ages, with unique scenery and entertainment projects that young people will love. The whole town is not big, making it easy to stroll around. Two days and one night is just right for a visit.

Feelings and Suggestions for Guizhou Group Tour (Xijiang Miao Village and Zhenyuan Ancient Town)
After having lunch at around 2:30 PM from Xiaoqikong, we set off for Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village. The drive took more than 2 hours, and we arrived at the village around 5 PM. At this time, there weren't as many people as shown online. I paid extra to stay in a scenic room within the village. From the balcony of the room, you can see two-thirds of the village. My homestay was near the No. 1 Wind and Rain Bridge. Personally, I think the main reasons to come here are to see the night view and take photos. If you choose to stay in the scenic area, it's better to pay extra for a scenic room. We were too tired from rushing around the scenic spots these two days, so we didn't have the energy to walk to the viewing platform. Seeing the long queue for the sightseeing bus, we decided not to join. Instead, we enjoyed sitting on the balcony of our room, having a drink, listening to the singer at the nearby open-air restaurant, and feeling the evening breeze while watching the lights of the Miao village. That moment was truly enjoyable. My daughter and I even rated which singer sang well and who went off-key, which was really fun. The next day, we woke up naturally and took a stroll around the terraced fields. I must mention that the food in the Miao village is expensive and average, but the highlight is the many stalls selling freshly grilled pork skewers. Ten skewers for ten yuan, and they are delicious. We bought them from an old lady who grilled them in the front while two people cut the meat in the back. The meat was tender and tasty. We had them on the first night and went back for more the next day. Most people bought 20 to 30 skewers, highly recommended. We set off at 1 PM and arrived in Zhenyuan after a two-hour drive. Honestly, I joined the tour because the third day included two ancient towns, which seemed like a good chance to rest before heading to Fanjing Mountain. I had no particular feelings about Zhenyuan, but it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Zhenyuan Ancient Town is small, with a Wuyang River running between two mountains and two streets. Built along the mountain and by the water, we started exploring the ancient town at 4 PM. The guide told us about the history and architecture of the ancient town along the way. The 2000-year-old town has many historical marks, and walking through Zhusheng Bridge, Shiping Mountain, Yumen Wharf, and Sifang Well Alley, we felt the rich history and cultural heritage of the old streets and alleys, marveling at the wisdom and way of life of the ancients. It took about an hour to visit these spots, and then we looked for food. The commercialization of the ancient town is not as severe as other ancient towns. We didn't eat by the riverbank but crossed the new bridge to the south, where many locals dine. My father was tired from walking, so we went back to the homestay to rest after dinner. By the way, there are buses in the ancient town, with stops at the new bridge connecting various parts of the town. On the way back to the homestay, I saw many phone signs for renting electric scooters and took a photo. Luckily, I did. After washing up and resting until almost 10 PM, my daughter and I felt energized, so I called to rent a scooter, and we started our night tour of the ancient town. Despite the hot sun during the day, it gets very cool in the evening in Guizhou. Riding the scooter, we sped through the town and caught the last boat tour. Although the 80 yuan ticket per person made my daughter feel the pinch, the view from the second floor of the boat was excellent. The lights on both sides of the river were dazzling, and the river was brightly lit. The evening breeze was refreshing, and some young men on the boat humorously greeted and sang to people dining on the shore. Their enthusiasm was infectious, and we felt completely relaxed. After the boat ride, we were hungry again and went to a noodle shop on the south side of the bridge. Judging by the accents, the diners and those in line were locals. We ordered beef offal noodles and some skewers and bought some marinated duck wings and chicken feet for lunch the next day at Fanjing Mountain. The noodles were delicious, and the beef offal was tender. My daughter even drank all the soup. We returned to the homestay around midnight, slept by the water, and had a dreamless night.

Revisiting the ancient town of Zhenyuan, I discovered the poetic prosperity deep in the years, with a history and culture even older than Guiyang
Four years later, I came to Zhenyuan Ancient Town again. Although the trip was still hurried, it felt more familiar and intimate, as if it was a gentle retrospective of time. The amazement and shock of the first encounter, after the precipitation of years, added a bit more familiarity and warmth. Compared to the fleeting glance in 2020, this reunion gave me a deeper understanding of Zhenyuan Ancient Town, known as "China's most beautiful ancient town."
Zhenyuan is an ancient town with a long history. It has been established as a county since the 30th year of King Zhao of Qin, more than 2300 years ago. It was once one of the most important cities in Guizhou, serving as the location of Dao, Fu, and Zhou for more than 700 years, with a history even older than the provincial capital Guiyang. Today, it belongs to the Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture of Guizhou Province.
Revisiting Zhenyuan Ancient Town, we encountered good weather. We immediately launched the drone and looked down from the air. The Wuyang River meanders through the town in an "S" shape, with the old Fu city on the north bank and the old Wei city on the south bank, resembling a Tai Chi diagram from a distance. Zhenyuan Ancient Town preserves the city walls and gates from the Ming Dynasty, with more than 200 cultural relics and historical sites inside and outside the city, including ancient buildings, traditional residences, and historical docks. Notable sites include the Eight Guild Halls, Four Caves, Eight Temples, Nine Shrines, and Twelve Docks, all showcasing Zhenyuan's profound cultural heritage. Attractions such as Qinglong Cave, Zhongyuan Chan Courtyard, Wanshou Palace, and Zhusheng Bridge make every visitor linger.
Walking through the alleys of Zhenyuan Ancient Town, you will find that most of the streets and the gates of the mansions are crooked, and the roads are slanted. These unique designs have earned Zhenyuan the nickname "Crooked Gates and Slanted Roads." The ancient doorways, mottled window lattices, and green corners of the walls all tell the story of the town's prosperity and bustle.
Zhenyuan Ancient Town not only has a long history but is also a melting pot of diverse cultures. More than 20 ethnic groups, including Han and Dong, live here. Central Plains culture, Jingchu culture, Bashu culture, Wuyue culture, Minyue culture, and indigenous culture blend here, forming a "social museum" of multi-ethnic and multi-cultural integration. Experts call it a "world cultural protection circle."
As night falls, Zhenyuan Ancient Town takes on another look. The night scene of the ancient town is even more charming under the dim lights. Boarding a cruise ship, as the boat slowly leaves the dock, we seem to be in a flowing landscape painting. The lights on both sides of the river and the stars in the sky reflect each other, making the Wuyang River look dreamy. Sailing on the green waves, people feel like they are traveling in a painting. At this moment, Zhenyuan is breathtakingly beautiful.
Once an important gateway of Guizhou, Zhenyuan Ancient Town is now a famous tourist attraction in Guizhou. It was named a Chinese historical and cultural city in 1986, became a national scenic spot in 1988, won the title of "China's Top Ten Most Beautiful Ancient Towns" in 2009, and became a national 5A-level tourist attraction in 2020. These honors not only affirm Zhenyuan Ancient Town but also comprehensively recommend its history, culture, and natural scenery.
Fortunately, when we arrived, the 2024 China (Qiandongnan) International Folk Song Choir Festival was being held here. It attracted many tourists from other places, and even many international friends, making the ancient town more lively. We also encountered a drone show in the evening, which was truly eye-opening.
It is particularly worth mentioning that although Zhenyuan Ancient Town has many honors, it is open to tourists for free, which is rare in the country. It is indeed a very tourist-friendly place, making it a place worth visiting again and again, a place that makes visitors linger.

This high-speed rail tour in Guizhou started from Guangzhou, taking the high-speed train directly to Congjiang Station, and then traveling by car to various attractions. Our first stop was Basha Miao Village, the second stop was Zhaoxing Dong Village, and the third stop was Zhenyuan Ancient Town.
Zhenyuan Ancient Town is truly a beautiful ancient town. Every visit offers a different experience. This time, we coincided with the Dragon God's wedding ceremony, and the grand procession was very spectacular.
During the day, Zhenyuan is full of ancient charm, perfect for wandering through the alleys or sitting in a riverside café. At night, Zhenyuan becomes dreamy and enchanting, ideal for taking a boat tour on the Wuyang River.
Zhenyuan is a very photogenic place; any angle can produce great photos. Unfortunately, our schedule was tight this time, otherwise, we could have taken more portrait shots.
Additionally, you must go rafting on the Gaoguo River when in Zhenyuan. It's incredibly exhilarating, with pure wild rafting, clear and emerald green water, sometimes calm and sometimes rapid. You can even have a barbecue midway. The whole trip takes three hours, and it's truly satisfying.
Little Tips:
1. Transportation: We took the high-speed train to Congjiang Station and then rented a car for self-driving.
2. Tickets: Zhenyuan Ancient Town has free admission.
3. Accommodation: Stay directly in the ancient town; riverside view rooms offer better views.
4. Others: It is recommended to spend two to three days for the visit.
