Shikoku is the hometown of Kukai, the Great Master of Buddhism, and Zentsuji Temple is the birthplace of Kukai. Many tourists visit Zentsuji Temple as a pilgrimage site during the Shikoku Pilgrimage to pay their respects. Among the 88 sacred sites in Shikoku, sites 1 to 88 all have deep connections with Kobo Daishi. Kobo Daishi was born in Zentsuji, the 75th temple. You may think this number is strange, but the pilgrimage starts from Tokushima, passes through Kochi, Ehime, and finally reaches Kagawa, connecting all the prefectures of Shikoku into one "yen", which has nothing to do with the number. The pilgrimage does not need to be carried out according to the numbering. Those coming from afar can also start the pilgrimage from Zentsuji Temple. Among the 88 sacred sites in Shikoku, some are hidden in the hills or on the top of the mountain, some are on the coastline and beside the river, and some are hidden in the bamboo forest. 🎏 Zentsuji, located at 3-3-1 Zentsujicho, Zentsuji City, Kagawa Prefecture, Japan, is a temple established by Kobo Daishi, the founder of the Shingon sect, upon his return from China in 807 at his birthplace. Along with Kyoto's To-ji and Koyasan in Wakayama Prefecture, it is one of the three great historical sites associated with Kobo Daishi. Additionally, it is the seventy-fifth location of the Shikoku Pilgrimage's eighty-eight sacred sites. The temple has a history of 1200 years and is part of the pilgrimage route, featuring a magnificent bell tower. The entire site is quite large, and the ancient camphor trees, some over a thousand years old, are also quite impressive. The Aoyama across from Zentsuji (see photos 11 and 12) is also a popular hiking spot.

Zentsuji in Kagawa Prefecture. Although the temple is well known, it is quiet and not crowded. The nearby Kumaoka Confectionery Store is a must-visit shop. Its specialty is hardtack, which was developed as a preserved food during the Sino-Japanese War. It is harder than you'd imagine, and it feels like you're eating a rock. There are various types, including stone bread, square bread, and round bread, and they are all so hard you might break your teeth. As a vestige of the former army, there is still a Japan Ground Self-Defense Force garrison here, and when you see the well-maintained streets and well-equipped public facilities, you realize that it is a key point in national defense.
