It is nice to get off the train and stroll around the town with plenty of little shops and cafes to explore. You can rent a bicycle for bike and explore around the town. Although this is a JR Kyushu Pass trip, catching the limited Yufuin no Mori or Limited Express Yufu trains, which run only a few times a day, requires investing at least half a day. Instead, I opted for a high-speed bus, traveling from Beppu Kannawa-guchi to a highway IC near Bungomori Station in just 50 minutes. I visited Bungomori Station because the nearby Bungomori Roundhouse is rumored to be a key setting in Suzume's Door-Locking. Despite my tight schedule, I managed to complete an itinerary combining high-speed buses and local trains, covering Beppu-Bungomori-Yufuin-Oita. Located between Hita and Yufuin, I carefully planned to spend about 4 hours on this trip, staying overnight in Oita on the first day. #summervacay My Kyushu adventure kicked off in Yufuin! After landing in Fukuoka, I drove straight to the charming town of Yufuin, a smooth 1.5-hour journey. I checked into Yufuin no Haru Onsen Ryokan, a small, intimate hotel with only 11 rooms. Being summer and off-peak season, the occupancy was low, which made for fantastic privacy. They have two outdoor private onsens, two outdoor public onsens, and one indoor public onsen. My room was a traditional Japanese style, opening right out to a lush green Japanese garden. The common areas, while smaller than other onsen hotels I've stayed at, were incredibly cozy, spotlessly clean, and offered excellent value for money. Both dinner and breakfast were absolutely delicious! For dinner, I could have easily eaten three more of the corn tempura – it was that good! The sashimi was incredibly fresh, and the soy sauce was wonderfully sweet and savory. The fatty wagyu beef with rice was exceptionally tasty; I had two big bowls! Yufuin town itself is incredibly tranquil, likely due to it being the off-season. There weren't many people around, which was nice. While there are plenty of shops and snack stalls, I found I could explore most of it within a couple of hours. I popped into a cat café and just wandered around; it was a pleasant, relaxed visit. Located on the eastern coast of Kyushu, Oita Prefecture boasts diverse natural landscapes including oceans, mountains, forests, grasslands, and valleys. Renowned as Japan's premier hot spring destination, it features numerous hot spring resorts such as the famous Beppu and Yufuin. Beyond hot springs, the region offers local delicacies like chicken tempura, Bungo beef, and premium fish varieties such as Seki horse mackerel and Seki mackerel. The new sightseeing train "Kanpachi-Ichiroku" debuted on April 26, 2024, connecting Hakata in Fukuoka with Yufuin and Beppu in Oita. Its name honors two Oita-born merchants, "Aso Kanpachi" and "Eto Ichiroku," who contributed to the national railway's Kyudai Line. The train's glossy black exterior features golden lines tracing Yufu Plateau's route map, with station names along the base reflecting the plateau scenery. It comprises three themed cars: 1) Car 1 showcases Oita/Beppu with warm red tones symbolizing hot springs and volcanoes from Oita's flag; 2) Car 2 embodies Yufuin/Hita's local culture as a communal lounge serving buffet-style regional cuisine, drinks, and original merchandise; 3) Car 3 celebrates Fukuoka/Kurume's heritage.
