The Yogyakarta Memorial, standing in the Jetis area in northern Yogyakarta, commemorates the historical memory of the Indonesian War of Independence with a pure white cone-shaped building complex. The three-story structure of the main building implies philosophical symbolism, and the top observation deck can overlook the city and the outline of Mount Merapi. The internal circular gallery displays black and white photos, manuscripts and military remains, and some scenes restore the actual operation of the provisional government in the 1940s. In the memorial park outside the building, the circular pool reflects the stone tablets engraved with the names of the fallen, and local students often receive historical education here in the morning. The underground exhibition room presents the city's defense system as a temporary capital during the war through multimedia installations and physical models. At certain times of the week, members of the Veterans Association will tell oral histories at the entrance square. The open-air theater on the east side of the park occasionally hosts traditional shadow play performances, allowing war memories and Javanese culture to have a time-space dialogue. This solemn but not oppressive memorial space has become an important cultural landmark for understanding the formation of the modern Indonesian nation.

Tugu Jogja – Lively Night Atmosphere
#JanuaryGoodPlaces2025
At nine o'clock in the evening, we took a walk around Tugu Jogja, looking for a place to have dinner. I didn’t expect to feel a strong lively atmosphere as soon as I arrived at the roundabout. The whole place was full of energy. The coffee shops around the roundabout were full of young people, who gathered together to chat and drink coffee, looking very relaxed.
We also noticed that there were always a lot of people taking pictures in the middle of the circle, especially at night when the lights shone on the monument, forming a beautiful background, attracting many tourists and locals to take pictures.
