Yamdrok Lake, which means "Swan Pond" in Tibetan, is one of the three sacred lakes in Xizang. It is also called Yamdrok Lake (locals usually call it "Yam Lake"), because "co" in Tibetan means "lake". Geographically, it belongs to Langkazi County in Shannan Prefecture. The lake surface is 4,441 meters above sea level, the total length of the lakeshore is 250 kilometers, the total area is 638 square kilometers, and the lake water is 20-40 meters deep. It is the largest inland lake in the northern foothills of the Himalayas. There are many forks in Yamdrok Lake, like coral branches, so it is also called "the upper coral lake" in Tibetan. There are more than 10 small islands in the lake, the largest of which can accommodate five or six households, and the smallest of which is only a hundred square meters. The lake is rich in fine-scaled fish, Xizang split-tailed fish, plateau naked carp, etc. This is also the largest water bird habitat in southern Tibet. Every winter, flocks of birds migrate south here. There are many swans, water pigeons, yellow ducks, ospreys and bar-headed geese on the lakeshore and the islands in the middle of the lake. Yamdrok Lake is much more beautiful when viewed from a distance than when approached closely. After crossing the 5,030-meter Gangbala Pass, it takes about 30 minutes to go down the road to the shore of Yamdrok Lake. This route is a good angle to appreciate Yamdrok Lake. There are many viewing platforms along the way where you can stop and take pictures.
