Among the many ways to admire the magnificent Taipei 101, viewing it from afar would be my personal favorite. It is popular amongst tourists, be it visiting in the morning or sunset, the trail is always packed with tourists and locals. We chose the shortest route up, which took about 20minutes, but boy the steps were steep! There are many viewpoints, but if you are feeling adventurous, you can climb up one of the huge rocks to watch the sun fall. There is an Arabica across the street from the entrance of the trail, perfect to cool down after the sweaty hike.
How to get there:
MRT Xiangshan (Red line) - follow the pedestrain and walk along the perimeter of Xiang Shan Park, then on the uphill turn right when you see a condo. Upon turning right, you’ll see a temple then continue walking in the alley. You will see the entrance on your left after a short walk.
PS: bring along mosquito repellent as the mosquitoes there are relentless.
Difficulty of trail: 2/5
View: 5/5

Stunning views of Taipei, elephant mountain.
Elephant mountain hiking trail.
Taipei is a stunning metropolis and some of the best views of the sprawling city can be found up the Elephant mountain, a moderately steep hiking trail. The mountain takes it’s name from the shape of the mountain and has inspired lots of art and culture in the local area.
It is very close to the Xiangshan metro stop and it’s on many bus routes, if you take an uber you can put in the Arabica coffee shop as your drop off point as that is at the bottom of the trail.
There are toilets at the bottom of the trail that are free to use and there are plenty of places along the way to sit and take a breath, this is ideal as the trail is steep in parts and made up for big steps.
The points at the top offer a stunning view of the city, especially at sunset and sunrise but get there early as the viewing points can get very busy with tourists and professional photographers.
It’s an easy hike and can be done within an hour, it’s good to do it early morning to avoid the crowds and get a hike in before it gets too hot!

Xiangshan or Elephant Mountain
#TravelTaiwan Beautiful sunset viewing point in Taiwan If you have the energy, motivation and determination, I must say you must not miss it.
Xiangshan Mountain or Elephant Mountain, a small mountain on the eastern side of the suburbs of Taipei, with a rich forest, is another popular viewpoint of Taipei and the sunset, especially at the highest point of the mountain where many tourists come to take pictures of Taipei and the Taipei 101 building every day, especially photographers.
The route to climb Xiangshan Mountain or Elephant Mountain is almost entirely stairs from the starting point to the top. Although the distance is not far, about 500-600 meters, it is almost the entire way up the stairs. If you ask if it is tiring, the answer is very tiring. But when you see the view in front of you, I can tell you that it will make you feel less tired immediately. I recommend that friends go up in the evening so that you can experience both atmospheres.

Hiking up Elephant Mountain
#elephantmountain #taipei
After a quick breakfast at a nearby 7-11 store, we took one of the earliest trains to 象山station, promptly starting the straightforward ascent via flights of numerous steps to the summit. There was a steady drizzle but it wasn’t anything to worry about - the weather was still perfect for a morning climb & we had almost the entire trail to ourselves.
Before long, we reached the peak of Elephant Mountain with beautiful views of Taipei 101 towering above the bustling city, and out came the small Singapore flag 🇸🇬 as usual 😂

Hike for view of Taipei City and Taipei 101
Xiangshan aka Elephant Mountain
Taipei 101 is an iconic building in Taiwan, and in my opinion, the best place to view it will be at Elephant Moutain.Great view of Taipei City as well.
This hiking trail is just a few minutes away from the MRT station, so it is quite accessible. The hike itself is just lots and lots of rock stairs, so just take your time and pace yourself. There are places to stop and rest along the way up
What people like to when they reach the viewpoint - climb up the giant rock! Do be careful and stay safe!

Elephant Mountain.
Take the MRT Red Line to Xiangshan Station.
Take Exit 2 and you will see signs for the direction to the hiking trail outside.
Use Google Maps or ask the locals for directions where the entrance is.
I forgot the number of steps to rock point, i lost track because i was sweating too much, bringing a heavy jacket with me. The last count I could remember was 600+ and we were not even there yet. 😂 We did not get a chance to take photos on top of the rocks because I’m I was gonna blown up bu the wind. I guess the best time would be early in the morning or late at night.

Horseshoe Viewing Platform
The Horseshoe Viewing Platform is located near Thumb Mountain on the sixth section of the Taipei Grand Trail. From here, you can see the Taipei cityscape, especially the 101 Tower. It's a great spot for sightseeing and taking photos, making it a popular check-in and fitness destination with many visitors.
Recommended routes: Start from China University of Science and Technology in Nangang and walk the sixth section of the Taipei Grand Trail. This route guarantees you will walk ten thousand steps a day, which is very beneficial for your health. Alternatively, you can exit at Yongchun MRT Station and walk along Songshan Road, Yongchun Gang Park, Xiangshan Trail, and Renzi Stele to reach the Horseshoe Viewing Platform.
All roads lead to Rome, so choose the one that suits you best. This beautiful place is highly recommended.

The Best Spot to Capture Taipei 101: Xiangshan Trail
Xiangshan Trail in Taipei is the best location to capture Taipei 101 and the city's panoramic view. It's not far from the MRT station, and there are many restaurants nearby, making it a convenient spot. The trail takes about 15 minutes to reach the viewpoint, and many photography enthusiasts arrive early in the morning. It's recommended to arrive a little before sunset to capture daytime, sunset, blue hour, and night views, which are all very beautiful. This is a free attraction and highly recommended. Remember to go on a sunny day to see the exceptionally beautiful scenery!

Best view of Taipei!
If you’re looking for the best view to see the beautiful city of Taipei, head over to the Elephant mountain trail for a short hike! Takes about 20min to climb up the steps! Definitely a beautiful sight.
We headed over for a sunrise hike and it was not busy at all! You can also try heading over for a sunset hike. We actually took a Uber over because it was too early and there were no trains.
Overall, this was one of the best view of Taipei and we would highly recommend!

If there’s one thing you must do in Taipei, it’s hike up Elephant Mountain for sunset. The views up here are not just the best in the city, but also one of our favourites in the whole of Taiwan. The view of Taipei 101 towering over the skyline is magical, especially when it is framed by the forest that covers Elephant Mountain.
The easiest way to get to Elephant Mountain is to take the red line to Xiangshan MTR Station (it took us 15 minutes from Taipei Main Station).

Documenting the beautiful scenery along the hike
Our department chose hiking for team building, and I really, really enjoy such activities. Not only can we appreciate the beautiful scenery along the way, but we also gather together, talking and laughing. Even the slight hardships on the road suddenly seem less noticeable.

Taipei: Yangmingshan/Beitou Hot Springs, wait until the cherry blossoms are in full bloom
Taipei: Yangmingshan/Beitou Hot Springs, wait until the cherry blossoms are in full bloom
Taipei Citywalk, start a day of admiring cherry blossoms at Yangmingshan, experiencing Beitou Hot Springs, and checking in at Taipei 101. Yangmingshan is Taipei's backyard, and every year from February to March is the season of blooming flowers, with colorful azaleas and early cherry blossoms competing for beauty. By the end of February, the Yaezakura cherry blossoms are blooming competitively, and when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, the misty clouds surround the green hills, and soaking in a sulfur hot spring is like a springtime encounter.
🌸 Flower Viewing Spots:
Yangmingshan Flower Clock (Pic 2-7)
Yangmingshan Fountain (Pic 1)
Yangmingshan Second Parking Lot (Pic 9)
🚍 How to get there:
Take the small 8 bus from the Jiantan MRT station, or take the 129/small 9 bus from the Beitou MRT station to reach the above flower viewing spots.
📝 Flower Viewing Tips:
1⃣ The Yangmingshan Flower Clock is planted along the stream with colorful azaleas, which bloom at the end of February together with the early cherry blossoms, creating a layered effect.
2⃣ The Yangmingshan Fountain is tightly surrounded by Yaezakura cherry blossoms, resembling light pink clouds, and the combination with the fountain is very photogenic.
3⃣ The cherry blossoms at the Second Parking Lot bloom earlier, and by the time of visit, it is nearing the end of the flower season.
4⃣ The bus schedule provided by Google Maps for the Yangmingshan area is not accurate; wait for the bus based on the electronic display.
5⃣ Yangmingshan also has other nice attractions such as Xiaoyoukeng and Qixing Mountain (my visit failed due to heavy fog at the mountain top). You can take the 108 bus (circular mountain bus) from the Yangmingshan bus terminal, but pay attention to the schedule as there are not many buses.
♨️ Beitou Hot Springs:
Yangmingshan is an active volcano with abundant geothermal resources. The hot springs in the Beitou area are natural green sulfur springs, which are said to contain trace amounts of radium and have healing effects, one of only two in the world. In addition to hot spring hotels, you can also choose specialized hot spring shops. I chose the 'Emperor Pool Hot Spring Royal Meal Pavilion', which can be reached by the small 8/small 9 bus. The hot spring is located in the sulfur stream of Yangmingshan, surrounded by numerous spring eyes steaming with sulfur vapor. After soaking in the sulfur spring, the skin really becomes more delicate, worth a try.
⭕️ The private bathhouse requires at least two people (500 Taiwan dollars), with a 30-minute limit on holidays and 40 minutes on weekdays; the public pool is not time-limited (250), and the locker requires a 20 coin.
❗️ If you choose the mixed public pool, bring a swimsuit.
‼️ There is a restaurant inside, and if you spend more than 400 on a meal, you can soak in the public pool for free.
🗻 Sulfur Valley:
After soaking in the hot springs, I checked in at Sulfur Valley (Pic 10-11), a 15-minute walk from the Emperor Pool Hot Springs. A large amount of sulfur vapor spews from the ground, accompanied by boiling and erupting spring water, making a hissing sound, a spectacular scene.
🏢 Taipei 101:
After the tour, I checked in at several classic spots of Taipei 101.
1⃣ Takeuchi Izakaya (Pic 12-13), walk south for 10 minutes from Exit 2 of the Xiangshan MRT station to compress the towering skyscraper and old house into one picture, creating a beauty of old and new integration.
2⃣ Xiangshan (Pic 14-16), enter the mountain from the 'Xiangshan Trail' entrance on Google Maps, choose the right path at the first fork, and reach the photography platform in 15 minutes. But it is recommended to continue walking up for 10 minutes to the Six Giant Rocks viewing platform, where the view is more open. The mountain trail is all stone steps with handrails and street lights, making climbing effortless.

Xiangshan Elephant Mountain or Elephant Mountain is another viewpoint of Taipei 101. Almost all of the walking paths are stairs from the beginning to the highest point. The view is really beautiful, easy to walk. There are places to stop and rest along the way. Walk for only a few minutes and you will see the beautiful view. The recommended time is in the morning before 10 am and in the evening between 4-5 pm. The light is good, not too hot, not too dark.
💕Advice: Not recommended for people with knee pain or leg pain.

Elephant Mountain's Stunning Views in Taipei
#2024wish
We had a really pleasant 5 days in Taipei as the pace of living is slower in comparison to Singapore and the locals are amicable and helpful.
Elephant mountain was the first destination that we went to. It is the easiest mountain to 'climb' among the Four Beasts in Taiwan. Offering a panoramic view, many people could be seen ascending the hill to breathe in some fresh air and drink in the views.
In order to catch a glimpse of sunset at the peak, we gritted our teeth and climbed the steep steps with no complaints. Depending on your fitness level, it takes around 15 minutes to get to the top. Fortunately, there are several benches and viewing platforms on our way up to rest our tired feet.
We were blessed with good weather when we were at the Elephant mountain and managed to take pretty good photos before the weather turned awfully gloomy for the remaining days.

Xiangshan is a good place to exercise after you have had a lot of delicious food from the food stalls in Taipei. It took me around thirty minutes to get to the middle of the trail. I did not go to the top of the walking trail but I only had been the middle of the walking trail. I was able to see a clear view of Taipei 101 and other skyscrapers in Taipei city. If you are wondering where to go for night view, it will be a good recommendation for you to view Xiangshan walking trail.

A little workout for a breathtaking view! 🤩
💪🏼 If you're up for a bit of a challenge and some breathtaking scenery, try this : the Elephant Mountain Trail in Taipei.
🏔️ This trail is not for the faint-hearted, folks. It's a steep climb up a series of stairs and paths that wind their way up the mountain. There is a lot of stairs to climb. A lot and it can be quite steep and high. Wear something really comfortable and a good pair of shoes as you will surely perspire!
🤩 However, after all the effort, the view was really wonderful. You will get to see the beautiful view of Taipei 101! The view from the summit is well worth the effort. You'll be treated to sweeping vistas of Taipei's skyline, with the iconic Taipei 101 building dominating the view. We spent a good amount of time up there taking in the scenery and catching our breath

Xiangshan Hiking | Elephant Mountain
- Are you interested in getting an amazing city view for free? If so, keep reading.
- Take the metro to Xiangshan. It’s the last stop on the red line.
- When you arrive, take exit 2. It’s an 8 minute walk to the start of the hiking trail and it’s clearly signposted.
- From the start, it’s on average 18 minutes up with different viewpoints.
- If you have a good level of fitness, you’ll be fine. If you don’t, there’s a rail and four or five different view points where you can stop and take a break.
- You will definitely sweat. Bring an extra t-shirt if you want to change.
- On a clear day or night, the views are beautiful. Personally I preferred this to going to Taipei 101 itself.
- Thanks for reading!

Golden Hour in Taipei
Caught the sunset at 象山 which provided a beautiful golden hour skyline against the iconic Taipei 101 tower! The climb up the mountain was much harder than expected, there are many steps up and the climb is steep, so go prepared with sports attire and proper trekking shoes.

Beautiful Sunset from Elephant Mountain
Atop Elephant Mountain, as the sun's golden embrace kisses Taipei goodbye, the journey to this moment becomes all the more worth it. The ascent, though punctuated with myriad stairs and trails, led through a 30-minute hike that was both a challenge and a promise of the reward that awaited.
Every step upwards was a testament to the human spirit's drive and curiosity. The sweat, the rhythmic panting, and even those fleeting thoughts of turning back, were all forgotten as the city's iconic silhouette, with the majestic Taipei 101 piercing the heavens, began to unravel.
As the horizon turned to molten gold and city lights began to twinkle, the panorama from Elephant Mountain was a breathtaking blend of nature’s grandeur and human achievement. This isn't merely a sunset; it's a story of perseverance, of conquering every stair and trail, and of the sheer wonder that ensues when nature and cityscape converge in harmonious splendor.
